Honda: CR-Z News **Facelift Revealed (page 31)**

It kinda looks like it was inspired by the Mazda RX-8.

I like it but I doubt that the 19s will make it to production. 17s, maybe. Waiting for this model for a long time. Just make it a 2 seater, somewhat like a 3 door Fit with a more potent engine.

Honda CR-Z Concept (more pics)
One of the new concept cars Honda will unveil at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show is the CR-Z sports compact, a possible preview of a replacement for the popular Honda CRX. The official tagline for the concept is “a next-generation lightweight sports car equipped with a Honda petrol-electric hybrid system” but telltale signs this is a likely precursor to a new CRX is the familiar profile and glass rear end. It doesn’t hurt that both cars share a very similar name as well.
Key features of the new concept include the over-sized grill and aggressive wedge shape, centrally mounted dual exhaust pipes and a rear glass hatch. Other design details included in the CR-Z are the electronic side-mirrors, LED headlights and 19in alloys.
For the interior, designers attempted to combine a sporty look with something that remains modern and high-tech. The result was the adoption of a mesh material for most of the surfaces with plenty of glass and LEDs laid out across the instrument panel.

The sizzle in the Steak
Cool looking wedge shape.
I doubt that high belt line and very small side windows will make it to production.

Not bad. I would be severely tempted to pick one up as a daily driver

Honda Will Present Hybrid @ Tokyo Show
TOKYO (AP) — Cars don't have to sacrifice looks to be environmentally friendly — they can be muscular and stylish, too.
That's the message Honda (HMC) hopes to send at this month's Tokyo auto show with its new gas-electric hybrid sports car CR-Z.
"This is something rivals can't offer," Tetsuji Morikawa, a Honda Motor engineer, said of the CR-Z, whose sales date is promised for the "near future."
The vehicle has maintained "the essence of the sports car" while still delivering good mileage and less pollution, he said.
Hybrid vehicles tend to be bulkier than sleek sports cars because of the size and complexity of the hybrid systems, which include a battery, motor, engine, converter and other parts. They're usually not known for their torque, acceleration, handling and innovative design.
The CR-Z comes with a new hybrid system developed by Honda whose breakthroughs allowed designers to get around such restrictions to achieve its lean cutting-edge look, said Morikawa, while declining to give details about the hybrid system and the vehicle.
The model will be on display at the biannual Tokyo Motor Show, which opens to the public Oct. 27 in the Tokyo suburb of Chiba.
Japan's No. 2 automaker already sells the hybrid Civic but discontinued the hybrid Accord and hybrid Insight. It has promised a new hybrid in 2009.
Interest in hybrids is high among the world's automakers amid concerns about global warming and rising oil prices.
Japanese rival Toyota Motor (TM) has emerged the leader in the technology, having sold more than a million hybrids globally over the last decade.
Honda, which has sold about 220,000 hybrids worldwide so far, is eager to make its stamp on hybrids by showing how its reputation for sporty cars will also work for hybrids.

Honda CR-Z Concept to Make Production
Honda just unveiled its CR-Z Concept at Tokyo Motor Show, but has already announced that a variation of the car will make production. The Japanese automaker failed to mention any details about the production vehicle, but did indicate that it would follow the concept's green yet sporty intentions.
Powered by a gasoline-hybrid engine, Honda says CR-Z stands for 'Compact Renaissance Zero.' However Honda explains how they ended up with the CR-Z name, the car is an obvious successor to the popular CRX hatchback of the 1980s and early 90s.
Honda calls the CR-Z a "lightweight sports car," indicating that it will have the performance to backup its sporty looks — highlighted by an over-sized grill and twin front air ducts. Honda failed to release any specific information about the show or production car, but it's believed that the CR-Z shares its powertrain with the current Civic Hybrid.
The CR-Z's interior follows the design theme of "Hi-tech and Sporty," achieved by a very futuristic instrument panel. Honda also designed the interior to seem very airy and spacious by using mesh material on a simple framework.

Honda to Preview Global Hybrid in Paris
Although Honda was first to the mass-market with its Insight hybrid, the tiny form-factor made it less than practical for most buyers. Consequently, Toyota’s Prius ran off with the hybrid crown when it came along with seating for five. The Honda Civic hybrid has been making some inroads, but its similar price and slightly lower efficiency have held it back. Now Honda’s going back to the small-hybrid idea with its global hybrid concept.
Expected to go on sale in 2009, the new hybrid will be smaller than the civic, and will cost roughly two-thirds as much. In Europe, that will translate to a price of €16,000 to €20,000 compared to the Civic Hybrid’s starting price of €23,800. Honda hopes to bring sales of hybrids up to a full 10 percent of total car sales by 2010, and this new small hybrid should account for 200,000 units annually. Half of the new car’s production will be sent to the U.S., a quarter to Europe with the rest to be divided amongst the remainder of the globe.
Those sales goals are somewhat optimistic, considering combined sales of Toyota’s Prius and the Civic Hybrid barely topped 42,000 cars in 2007, according to Automotive News. However its lower price, the increasing popularity of hybrids, stricter emissions laws and the likelihood of more congestion charges like London’s recently enacted £25 daily fee, 50,000 units may not be so far from the mark. The new smaller hybrid has a possible goal of sliding under the 100g/km CO2 mark. That figure equates to a combined cycle fuel efficiency of 4.2L/100km, or 56mpg US/67mpg Imperial.
Honda envisions the small global hybrid as part of a three-car range starting with the newest addition, with the Civic Hybrid in the middle and topped with a new hybrid based on the CR-Z concept (pictured). A company spokesman says all three models will be on sale by 2011, and the company expects hybrids to account for 400,000 to 500,000 of the company’s sales each year.

Honda Hybrid Sports Coupe Aimed @ European Market
The U.S. may be the biggest market for hybrid cars but Honda’s next petrol-electric model will be designed primarily to suit the European market. Both the styling and engineering of the new model, tipped to be a small hybrid sports coupe, will be influenced heavily by European tastes and the car’s final development work will be handled by a team in Offenbach, Germany.
Honda gave us a preview of the car at last year’s Tokyo Motor Show with the unveiling of the CR-Z concept (pictured), and at the following Detroit Auto Show Honda boss Takeo Fukui said a sports coupe based on the CR-Z would enter production in late 2009 alongside two other dedicated hybrid vehicles. Speaking with Automotive News, Honda UK product manager Mark Turner revealed to reporters that the new hybrid sports coupe would only cost about €25,000 and that Honda initially consulted with European designers as far back as 2005.
The next hybrid model from Honda that we will get a preview of is a new global model, which is set to appear in concept form at this year’s Paris Motor Show. Expected to go on sale in 2009 as well, the new global hybrid will be smaller than the current Civic, and will cost roughly two-thirds as much. In Europe, that will translate to a price of €16,000 to €20,000 compared to the Civic Hybrid’s starting price of €23,800.
Both cars will feature a mild hybrid system, using an electric motor to aid a petrol engine and reclaim energy under braking. The only drawback is that mild hybrids can’t drive on electric power alone.

Some new info from Worldcarfans...
The new Honda hybrid coupe, based on the Honda CR-Z concept, is expected to cost roughly 25,000 euros with higher trim levels bringing the price up to 28k. This news comes from Honda UK's Mark Turner in an interview with Automotive News.
Turner indicates that "Europe is a key market for this model," and it should be. With European legislators making it clear they will continue to press for emissions reductions and fuel economy, the production version of the CR-Z could play an important role in Honda reaching their target of selling 400,000 to 500,000 hybrids per year.
Honda CEO Takeo Fukui mentioned that target figure at the NAIAS last January, with expectations of hitting that target by 2011. A sports coupe derived from the CR-Z concept will be one of the three hybrids on Honda's roster, according to Fukui.
Because of the importance of this vehicle, Europe will have a lot of influence on the final design of the car already three years in the making. "We have a big say in the design, and the engineering and R&D are being finished at Offenbach in Germany," Turner was quoted as saying.
But don't expect the car to diverge too far away from the design of the CR-Z concept. "If we could deliver a car that looked like that," Turner said, "it would be a big success whatever power unit we had in it." The CR-Z, which stands for Compact Renaissance Zero, was originally designed to be more open than other small cars.
Although a fully petrol version of the production CR-Z is also under consideration, expect to see the CR-Z production model with a mild hybrid powertrain, similar to Spring 2009's expected Global Hybrid. This system allows an electric motor to work in tandem with a petrol engine, but not on its own. Energy from braking is used to help recharge the batteries and fuel the electrics.

Spy shots of the 2010 Honda Hybrid may have Toyota looking over its shoulder.
Our team of spy photographers caught the next-generation Honda hybrid in the scorching deserts of the Southwest performing hot-weather testing. You can immediately tell from the car's profile that Honda's new "green" car is going straight after the Toyota Prius. Although the car is heavily camouflaged, you can see the basic overall design that mimics Toyota's popular hybrid and is heavily influenced by the shape of the company's FCX Clarity fuel-cell concept that appeared at the last Tokyo Motor Show. Back then, the FCX was introduced as a sporty hybrid, but it's obvious from these photos that usable economy is the name of the game now. Some have speculated that this new car will replace the now-discontinued Insight in Honda's lineup, while others maintain that it will become the new Civic Hybrid. Whichever label it wears, one thing for sure is that it will be one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles in the world, and may wrest the crown away from the Prius as the world's favorite green car.
The price of this new car will be low, as Honda maintains it will be an entry-level car with 200,000 units selling annually — half of those to be sold in the United States. Early rumors indicate that it may be as low as $19,000. With seating for five, this 4-door, front-wheel-drive hatchback will be using an updated motor-assist hybrid system and an advanced nickel/metal-hydride system, not lithium-ion batteries. We're not sure yet on the gasoline part of the equation; it could be the company's lean-burning 1.3-liter inline-4 (in the current Civic Hybrid) or something even leaner. The expectation is class-leading fuel economy, no doubt way north of 40 mpg. Look for the new Honda Hybrid to arrive at dealerships here in the States in late 2009.
