Remember the Honda Insight? It was an early attempt at a hybrid sports car. The only problem was it looked too dumpy and was slower than the milk float that delivers our morning pinta. Not to be put off by sales of the Insight that matched its sluggish performance, Honda will unveil a new hybrid-powered sports coupe at the Geneva motor show in March. Called the Small Hybrid Sports Concept, the car has been designed and built in Germany to better suit European tastes in sporty cars. It also acts as a showcase for Honda's next generation of hybrid power, mating petrol and electric power to work together more efficiently to provide greater performance and economy. As well as the boldly styled Small Hybrid Sports Concept, Honda is set to have a busy Geneva motor show because it will announce plans to sell three times as many Civic Hybrids in the UK in 2007, taking sales to 3,000 this year. It will show off the FCX fuel-cell car that has a range of 354 miles and produces nothing more harmful than water from its exhaust. Rounding off Honda's environmental tour de force at Geneva is a new diesel engine with a clever catalytic converter to reduce nitrous oxide emissions. |

Hybrids FTL....
Aren't the factories that produce the batteries absolutely awful for the environment? And doesn't the battery and all of its components really weigh down the car? No such thing as a hybrid sports car.... I say Toyota should just bring back a real turbo MR2, and Honda should bring back the Prelude. |
Certain batteries are toxic, ie lead acid or nickel cadmium. However, hybrids use nickel metal hydride, which are better for the environment. Within the next few years, hybrids will use lithium ion, which is even better.
As long as the batteries are recycled, it's a much better alternative when compared to using oil. The Tesla Roadster shows that it is possible to have a totally electric car that performs like a real sports car. There is a future for hybrid sports cars i thinks. |

At this year's Geneva auto show, Honda plans to unveil a Small Hybrid Sports concept, which it says hints at a future hybrid model. Honda's concept was designed by Honda R&D Europe, based in Germany. It will accompany the FCX fuel-cell concept that will be on display for the first time in Europe. The FCX, which TheCarConnection drove last year, will be offered for sale in 2008, both in Japan and the U.S. In Geneva, Honda also will show its next-generation diesel engine. The engine uses world-first technology to reduce emissions to the same level of a gasoline engine to meet the stringent U.S. Bin 5 requirements. Unlike Mercedes-Benz' Bluetec diesel technology, the system does not use urea injections, but instead has a catalytic converter that uses the reductive reaction of ammonia to "detoxify" nitrogen oxide by converting it into harmless nitrogen. The new diesel engine will be introduced within three years. |

The Small Hybrid Sports Concept is conceived around a front-wheel drive, small car platform and is powered by a Honda IMA 4-cylinder petrol/electric hybrid system driving through a CVT transmission. It explores the idea that a car can have a low environmental impact yet still deliver all the driving enjoyment expected of a compact sports car. The aerodynamic design is characterised by curvaceous and contoured surfaces contrasting with sharp “folded” edges. The short front and rear overhangs, together with wheelarches that wrap tightly around large wheels, further enhance the dramatic looks of this sports coupe. An accentuated, arrow-like nose features a full width air intake with Civic family overtones. This sweeps forward into a distinct protruding centre section complete with ‘H’ logo. The Concept model’s fluid lines are created by a steeply raked windscreen which extends back above the occupants’ heads where it meets a one piece glass roof. This in turn flows rearwards to give the car its fastback styling, terminating in a distinctive and futuristic 3D floating glass design – a concave element which forms an additional vertical window. At its base, further distinction is provided by a ‘floating’ LED tail light unit that stretches across the full width of the car. At its centre, the glass panel extends downwards and contains an illuminated ‘Small Hybrid Sports’ name plate. by the way, Prius nearly doubled sales from a year ago, racking up an astonishing 12,227 deliveries in Feb. What's Honda doing about its hybrid? this concept is not the answer. |

Prius sales have actually gone down since gas prices dipped <$3/gallon, which prompted Toyota to finally offer incentices such as 0.00% financing. This is probably what helped boost their sales last month.
Honda has definitely fallen behind in the hybrid game but hopefully they can make waves w/ the diesel race. |

Honda Planning sub-Fit CRX Hybrid?
When Honda reinvents the sporty CRX for the 2011 model year, it will reportedly feature a hybrid powertrain under its hood, rather than a small, rev-happy motor like the first CRX, which was sold in the U.S. through 1991. Winding Road reports that the reinvented CRX has been pushed back from '09 to '11 and that Honda's product planners have decided to make the updated CRX more like the now-defunct Insight. They also report that neither the Small Hybrid Sports Coupe concept nor the REMIX conceptwas a preview of the upcoming CRX, which will be shown in October at the Tokyo Motor Show. The original CRX was sold in two generations in the U.S. from 1984-91 and it featured 1.5-liter four-cylinder engines that ranged from 58 to 108 horsepower. The CRX truly was diminutive, measuring just 148 inches from bumper to bumper. The Fit, Honda's smallest car currently sold in the U.S., is ten inches longer but has four doors. The Fit isn't available with a hybrid powertrain. |

I was working at a gas station when these things first came out. I was pumping gas into a guy's car, while waiting I asked him if he wanted me to check the squirrels under the hood. He got pissed. But hey, he pulled into full service and got 6 gallons.

The CRX HF reincarnate will not have a K20, that's for sure. Not if they want high MPG. The original accomplished 50+ MPG by having more torque and less HP to make it get up and go faster from a stop but with relatively low RPMs.
....though a CRX-size/weight hatch with a K20 in it would be sweet.... |

I owned a '89 CRX Si and LOVED it. My favorite car....that thing carried home couchs from the the thrift store, five friends to parties, and several kegs for the parties. Can you tell that it was the car I had during college ;)

I have owned a 1990 HF and 89 Si. Gotta say I will never forget how fun both cars were. I was able to go 70 MPH off an onramp, yet get 45 MPG in the same car! Acceleration was HORRIBLE though, but still a fun little car :D

I test drove the 89 CRX Si when it was brand new. Too bad it did not know how to drive a manual tranny at the time thus, could not appreciate its capabilities. :damn:
A 2,250lb CRX with a K20 (A2 or Z3) would be a monster. :drool: As far as fuel economy goes, it should theoretically perform better than the Civic Si's 23 city/32 hwy by virtue of the fact that it would be 600lbs lighter. :ponder: |
