Acura: RLX News

Considering that even with the base price of $48K and top-of-the-line price of $56K, the 2012 SH-AWD RL doesn't do too well.
How on earth is Acura gonna sell this upcoming base FWD RLX sedan (with equally bland styling as the outgoing model) tagged with a $55K estimated price ?
Let's hope that the official MSRP will be a lot lower than these Autoweek's estimated pricing.

regardless FWD or RWD or whatever WD, ES350 will sell at any price... as long as it is cheaper than GS.
People will pay more for ES150 than Acura if that even exists, simply because it is a Lexus.
that shows you how important brand is. an average BMW 528 is in the mid $50k range, full loaded over $60k
People will gladly take a 528 than an "Advance" Super Handling fully loaded Accord sized RLX...
The only way that Acura will be successful with RLX is to make it bigger with better design and road presence. (Hyundai Genesis Sedan for example).
Something like the size and luxury and performance of a 7 series/LS/S Class, at the price of 5 series/GS/E Class.
RLX will fail big time if acura thinks it can go head to head with 5 series/GS/E Class.

I think the interior size of the RLX, at least from what Acura is saying, is that it will be as large as 7-series/LS/S Class. At 50-60k, it will be priced around 5-series/GS/E Class.
IMO, the new design looks good and has good road presence.
Two concerns, is Acura brand good enough to attract buyers with a budget of around $50-$60k? Is it going to be okay if the exterior is smaller but with a large interior?

It depends on what is success - to Honda is could be as few as 500/mo in sales. Compared to others in its class (5, A6, Genesis, E, XTS, M, GS) 500 a month is total fail. Heck, even Tesla will sell that many by next year.

The main point is comparing between the 2G RL and the 3G RL(RLX). If buyers are already not accepting the $50K 2G RL (even with SH-AWD), what makes them now to embrace the $55K (estimated by Autoweek) RL-replacement (FWD base trim) ?
Remember that the "RL" model name is ruined, and the Acura plate has trouble selling a $50+K premium sedan, which unfortunately carries the "RL" designation.
However, if Acura were to dump the "RL" model name altogether, and created another name for the upcoming flagship sedan, let say "XL" for example; this new flagship sedan might have a better chance to become successful.
Just completely wipe clean the "RL" name from people's memory. Start a new page in Acura's history. Bring out a brand new Acura flagship sedan - the "XL". Don't ever mention that it is to replace the failed "RL" sedan.
Market the "XL" such that it is positioned even above the failed "RL" model. Then it is possible to tag it with the higher-than-before $55K starting price.
Now, a new Acura model line, a new Acura premium sedan, an even more upscale Acura flagship, and a new beginning in Acura's history.

Comparing with sedans from other auto makers is all irrelevant here.

There is nothing common between 2G RL and RLX.
RLX FWD will be 25% more fuel efficient.
full 1 second faster to 0-60mph. there will be noticeable real world braod torque delivery.
comfort and NVH levels will be right at S class level. longer wheel base allow it.
full LED lights like higher end Audis. that not even option on base Audis.
handling at top of the class. Not compromised by harsh ride of sport suspension.
I predict this FWD RLX will handle better than all RWD sedan if they are not equiped with sport suspension. or special version like F sport.

There’s one other big advantage of Precision All Wheel Steer: more stable braking. On abrupt stops, no matter the speed, the RLX system kicks the toe in smoothly up to a maximum, to help keep the rear wheels more stable.

but it is only the informed buyers that look at GS-F Sport, A6 Prestige S line or
M sport package BMWs. FWD RLX is competing against the later. It will come standard alteast 18inch if not 19inch. The level of performance/equipment/handling/braking/NVH will be beyond the competition.
#3494
Avg buyer will look at ES350/GS/A6/528. standard rims 17inch.

BMW/MB/Lexus/Audi > Acura.

328 looked and feel very subpar product in fit and finish compared to Acura. I can curb my TSX and still it will not misaligned. couple of time it went over the curb and still its fine. I simply cannot do it with BMW. BMW resale value simply collapse. they dont have any prestige and reputation left after 2 or 3 years.
See this example of 2008 M5. It is rarest BMW and still it loses more than 60% of its value in 4 year.
http://acuraoffremont.com/Fremont-CA...-Car/13455588/
Another 528Xi 2010. 60% lost value. in 2 years despite being rare 6MT sport model.

RLX will be class of its own. you cannot compare it with commodity product like BMW 5 series.

brand prestige is built on product. my friend bought a 2013 328i on cash at more than 10% price cut without even negotiating. i find it cheaper than TL considering the amount of technology, new shape and 4 year free maintianance. So Acura has more prestige since people are paying more for it for given amount of technology/service.

I get it now...SSFTX is a comedian!

Honda is #1 and BMW is #25. it is long term reliability. Most BMW and Honda are built in EU.

It is like an afterthought with overimposing size and not good for street parking in areas where people will consider it as Ipad and need to be taken out.

You don't like rattles... and yet you bought, and own a Honda?
http://world.honda.com/news/2012/c12...les/index.html
Clearly North America produces the most amount of Honda Automobiles world wide... 814K vs 78K...
Don't have the BMW numbers split up the way Honda does... but I'd venture to say the figures are flipped....

Honda models in EU has much electronic gadgets as Acura. so chances of breakdown are higher there. American Honda are more cheaper version. Its Acura that should be compared to EU Hondas.
see Euro Civic seats. that makes introducing ILX superflous in EU.
when indepth study of depreciation and maintainance is done alone with real world fuel economy. Honda came on top even better than small diesel for VW and others.

Here's a thead from e90 post on bmw e92 rattles. I have a 2011 bmw e92 my 4th bmw.
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ht=E92+RATTLES
All of my BMW's rattled. I have had 4 Acuras which all had rattles too. IMHO my Acuras had less rattles and less problems than my BMWs. My brother has a 2012 Acura MDX and it does not rattle.
I spent more money on my ZDX than my BMW. I would buy a $60000 RLX if it is better in performance reliability and more fuel efficient than a $60000 bmw 5 series.
My Brothers $55000 MDX advance is better than my X5 3.0si was for a similar price.
Just my thoughts.

I guess I have been lucky, 13 Acura's and only one that had a rattle was my Vigor and the Service Mgr took it home over a weekend, tracked it down and fixed it. Also owned 3 Hondas, 2 Mazda's no rattles. All of these imports were purchased new mind you. Now my 49 Ford, 59 Belair, 70 Chevelle, 65 Beaumont, had a few. 69 GMC pickup had lots. The worst was 70 Mustang, was Mgrs demo, spent over 3 months of the 6 months I owned it in the shop and the best they could was reduce the loudness of the front end rattle and I traded it for my first import and have had imports ever since.

In short, my position has long been as follows - I have owned 2 Acuras and 4 Hondas. They were great cars. In the last 5 years it has been my observation that Honda and Acura have lost some of the things that made them great. I lament that fact and am willing to discuss that here with fellow enthusiasts. I am brand loyal to nothing at this point; BMW included (a company which makes plenty of boneheaded moves, IMO).

Most BMWs users have this problem. After using BMW for couple of models. they fail to recognize a quality product. so you see them switiching between BMW and Hyundai.
The newest Euro Civic 1.6L diesel. (world lightest diesel engine in its class) is 1350 to 1450kg+ vehicle. . can you imagine Civic 1.6L manual on Honda city platform is heavier than auto 2.0L BMW 3 series. This level of quality and reliability shows up in vehicle weight

You are making a series of assumptions in this post that demonstrate a profound ignorance of my posting history; not to mention demonstrating your willingness to engage in intellectual short cuts by applying stereotypes in broad strokes.

Hello?!
"Jewel Eye LED"
I'm sure you knew:
http://www.acura.com/future/RLX#5
http://www.acura.com/future/RLX#7
On the other hand Legend and Inspire/Accord are not in JDM line-up, not even in Mugen one?!

http://www.mugen-power.com/automobile/
I can't remember, but I wonder if they do a few months break between models in Japan, or Honda sends a clear message about future global line-ups!
Hopefully there will still be a Legend/Inspire/Accord combo in JP.
