Honda’s Acura brand is poised to take its place among the industry’s mainstream luxury brand with new products and ambitious sales goals, a top executive said today.
Acura will have a bigger push in the U.S. going forward, said John Mendel, executive vice president with American Honda, who was in Detroit to speak at the Automotive News World Congress.
The 2014 Acura NSX, to be built in Ohio, marks the return of the super car.
The 3rd-generation MDX will go on sale mid-year and the prototype was unveiled this week at the North American International Auto Show. In addition to a new 3.5-liter engine, the crossover introduces a 2-wheel-drive option to appeal to southern states.
The new Acura RLX sedan goes on sale March 15 with a price range of $48,450 to $60,450.
The brand is very North American-centric with about 95% of Acuras sold here.
“We have not adopted a push strategy on Acura,” Mendel said. The pull strategy consists of exporting to China, Russia, the Middle East and other markets wanting Acuras.
“The U.S. is still the lead but there are people overseeing some of the distribution of Acura globally.”
Acura had a curious birth.
"Acura was conceived originally as an interceptor brand," Mendel said, established as a place for Honda customers wanting more content in their vehicles.
“It was never truly envisioned as a luxury brand,” he said. “It was a technology platform.”
It wasn’t until 6 or 7 years ago that the automaker saw Acura evolve as a true brand and it has taken the focus of the last several years to define it.
A senior Honda executive described Acura as always orbiting Honda, Mendel said.
But the brand is at a tipping point. “Now it is time to send Acura into its own orbit,” Mendel said.
Acura will contribute to the parent company’s ambitious global goals: 6 million in sales by March 31, 2017.
North America will account for 2 million of those sales with the U.S. delivering 1.8 million – up from about 1.5 million now. Mendel expects U.S. sales to grow to 16 million in the next couple years and Honda plans to take a bigger share of that market.
By the end of this fiscal year, March 31, 2013, global sales are expected to be 4 million.
Much of the growth – 1.5 million sales – will be small subcompact cars based on the new platform for the Honda Fit coming in the spring of 2014 and the new crossover that was unveiled at the Detroit auto show and will go on sale in late 2014. Because the new Fit-based SUV is small, it will not affect sales of the larger CR-V, Mendel said.
When the new plant in Celaya, Mexico, starts making the Fit and crossover next year, Honda will be using North American plants to make 95% of what it sells in the U.S. “No other manufacturer comes close to that arc,” Mendel said.
North America currently takes the lead on product development for 30% of the Honda and Acura lineup now and that will increase as well.
North America will take the lead on more key models such as Accord, next-generation Civic and CR-V, Mendel said. The NSX is also being developed here and most light trucks come from North America including the Odyssey minivan and the Pilot and MDX.

American Honda Motor Co. is hoping for a record sales year in 2013 with key contributions coming from 7 new vehicle launches in the past 2 years — 3 under the Honda brand and 4 bearing the Acura badge.
1 of those new Acuras is the Japanese-made RLX sedan, coming in March, which replaces the disappointing RL as the brand’s biggest luxury sedan. It also is expected to move past the Marysville-made TL as Acura’s signature car.
Executive Vice President John Mendel, speaking at a media roundtable at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this week, said while the TL remains important, he doesn’t see it as the flagship of the Acura fleet.
“By default it has fallen to the TL,” he said, noting that the RL was never able to capture that role.
The flagship is a pinnacle, a standard bearer, not necessarily a best seller.
The TL still sells. It was the 2nd-best selling Acura trailing only the MDX sport-utility vehicle, itself getting an update this year, in 2012.
Mendel said the new RLX is envisioned to be that pinnacle of Acura sedans.
With several Acura products having gone through the redesign process lately, the TL now is 1 of the more aged models in the lineup, having last been updated in 2009.
Mendel didn’t share the timeline for a TL redesign, though on Honda’s normal cadence, it should be coming in the next 2 years.
But changes are definitely in store. He said the current TL was a bit of a ‘tweener, positioned between the BMW 3-Series and 5-Series and the Audi A4 and A6, for example. The next version will be placed more directly against the 5-Series and A6.

I really want to know who they get to do the study and research groups for some of their information?

People like certain members here who argue that the RL is a flagship sedan because it's on top of the Acura totem pole despite it not being a flagship sedan when compared to the 5 other major luxury players it intends to compete with...

6G TLX-S
Could it be the 7-series, A8, or the 5G TL ?

Am I interpreting this right? The mdx will offer rwd? People have been asking for rwd honda cars for ever and they decide to do it on useless SUV. That is pretty funny.
I have no hope left that honda will ever make a car I want to buy again like original nsx, s2000, or dc2 integra type r.

Following speculation that a next-generation Honda Accord Euro would not be produced, Honda President and CEO, Takanobu Ito, confirmed to CarAdvice at the Detroit auto show that a new model is being readied.
Asked directly whether a third-gen Accord Euro is being readied, the Honda boss replied unequivocally with “yes, it is”.
“Right now we’re working really, really hard on development [of Accord Euro],” Ito-san said.
The first-generation Honda Accord Euro came to Australia in 2003, and had a lifecycle of five years, replaced by the second generation in 2008. By usual Japanese model lifecycles, the Euro should be replaced this year, however its replacement – while confirmed – is still some time off.
“Can’t say yet,” said Ito-san about timing for the new-generation mid-sizer.
Speculation was rife that Honda would consolidate its Accord model range, following tough economic conditions in Europe and Honda’s struggle with development budgets in the wake of the GFC and Japanese tsunami.
Both the wide-body Accord (above), designed for the US and China, and the smaller Accord, which sells in Europe, launched in 2008, however while the bigger car switched to a new generation this year, the next Euro was nowhere to be seen.
One possibility for its delay, beyond budget constraints, lies with the fact the Honda Accord Euro also sells in the US as the Acura TSX, and the luxury brand has been developing the all-new RLX (bottom) – badged Honda Legend in Australia – and the next MDX. Both of those cars will debut Stateside this year.
Honda did, however, use the Detroit auto show to confirm production of a new-generation Jazz in the second quarter of 2014. With no word yet on Accord Euro timing, it indicates that a new-generation model will be more than a year away from production

Back-pedal! Back-pedal! Already setting the ground work for excuses for HORRIBLE sales numbers.
If the RLS is the pinnacle, then how can the TL be a 5 series fighter?
Clearly the RLX is no 5 series fighter....and it's the "pinnacle".
Is the new TL going to be a "pinnacle-plus"?!?!?

Expanding on its rich heritage of leadership in audio technology, Panasonic Automotive Systems Company of America is launching the newest generation of its acclaimed ELS audio brand — the ELS Studio Premium Audio System. The system made its debut at the LA Auto Show in November on the all-new 2014 Acura RLX and appears in the MDX prototype that Acura revealed at the auto show. ELS Studio embodies 9 years of relentless improvement to recreate the emotional experience of the recording studio.
“ELS Studio is without question the most advanced premium audio system that we have ever developed,” said Elliot “ELS” Scheiner, the multi-Grammy® Award-winning producer/engineer. “Our goal was to take premium audio to the next level by underscoring an exceptional experience for the driver. We were able to accomplish this by specifying the quality of the in-vehicle system hardware using studio equipment performance as our reference.”
ELS Studio Premium Audio is a collaboration between Scheiner, Panasonic and Acura engineers. Personally involved in each phase of development, Scheiner utilized his expertise as a professional recording engineer and producer to tune the ELS Studio Premium Audio system to the RLX’s and MDX prototype specific acoustic environments.
Each system features a new, high performance amplifier that provides powerful and accurate midrange and high frequency response with increased clarity. The RLX’s ELS Studio Premium Audio System’s 14 speakers create a dynamic listening experience for all seating positions.
2014 ELS Studio/RLX System highlights:
Hybrid, Titanium Dome Tweeters reproduce a wide frequency range and low distortion
8cm Super Dynamic Range Speaker with double press polypropylene cone providing low distortion and extended bass
17cm Super Dynamic Range Speakers in the front and rear door featuring extremely lightweight designs
20cm Super Low Distortion Driver (SLDD) Subwoofer with extended bass response
Multi-Channel Power Amplifier with 588 watts and powerful DSP for sound quality enhancements and independent control of front and rear door tweeters
“A key objective of the system was to provide listeners with the feeling of a studio sound environment inside their vehicle,” said Tom Dunn, Panasonic Automotive Systems of America, Director of Marketing and New Business Development. “With ELS Surround available throughout the Acura vehicle line-up, the ELS Studio designation serves to distinguish this system, as well as the Acura RLX and MDX, as the ultimate automotive audio experience.”8cm Super Dynamic Range Speaker with double press polypropylene cone providing low distortion and extended bass

Good news for Honda fans: the automobile manufacturer has just revealed which of its 2013 vehicles will receive support for Apple's hands-free extension of Siri, known as Eyes Free. Namely, the feature will be available as a dealer-installed option for the Honda Accord, along with the RDX and ILX from Acura. Mum's currently the word on software integration, but it's worth pointing out that the HondaLink infotainment system was previously revealed to debut on the 2013 Accord, and both the RDX and ILX feature AcuraLink -- so, you do the math. Honda's yet to reveal pricing for the kit, but hey, it's something to haggle about.

I know Honda / Acura's VTM4 and SH-AWD are sourced from BorgWarner... and found this rather interesting. Most likely this (or a variation) will be the system deployed as part of the previous partnership between BorgWarner and Honda...

Acura has released the 1st image of a new crossover concept the company plans to unveil at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show next month.
Acura hasn’t revealed any details about the concept apart from this single sketch and the announcement that the vehicle’s unveiling will be a world premiere.
We also know that the concept vehicle is destined for production, although so far the only market confirmed to receive it is the Chinese market.
With Acura’s RDX being all-new for 2013, and the company only just taking the covers off its redesigned 2014 MDX, the concept most likely previews a potential new entry from the Japanese brand.
Given the size of the wheels in proportion to the body, the vehicle pictured in the sketch is likely to be a compact crossover, aimed at rivals such as the Audi Q3 and BMW X1 and the upcoming Lincoln MKC and Mercedes-Benz GLA Class.
Sister brand Honda will also be using the upcoming Shanghai show to present a new concept, in its case a new MPV. While a redesigned version of the North American-spec Honda Odyssey MPV was just unveiled at the recent 2013 New York Auto Show, the global version of the car has been on sale since 2008 and will be due for a redesign soon. It’s possible that the MPV concept we see in Shanghai will be a preview of that redesign.
We’ll have more details soon, as the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show kicks off on Friday, April 19. For our complete coverage of the event, be sure to visit our dedicated show hub.

Acura is betting more standard content on the ’14 entry-level ILX will boost U.S. sales of the floundering sedan.
Honda’s near-luxury brand says it is raising the car’s base price $1,000 but adding $2,000 worth of interior improvements.
“1 of the issues we had with consumers was that they weren't seeing the (ILX’s) value and what they usually get with an Acura product,” Mike Accavitti, senior vice president-automobile operations for American Honda, tells WardsAuto in an interview here.
Buyers of the base ’14 ILX will get upgraded leather seating, heated front seats, active noise cancellation and an 8-way power driver’s seat for $26,900, increasing the car’s price “a little (but) adding a lot more value,” Accavitti says.
From May 2012, when the ILX went on sale, through April of this year, Acura sold 19,759 units, WardsAuto data shows. The brand is targeting 30,000 ILXs annually.
American Honda Executive Vice President John Mendel has said 1 of the key reasons ILX deliveries are falling short of expectation is the auto maker’s decision to pair the optional 201-hp 2.4L 4-cyl. engine with a 6-speed manual transmission only. Buyers of the base ILX get a 150-hp 2.0L with a 5-speed automatic.
Accavitti says Acura is considering mating the 2.4L to an automatic gearbox, but he does not provide a timeframe. “We're always looking at how we can improve the product, and to improve the powertrain is certainly something we could do on a future model.”
Acura research has found buyers of both variants have few complaints about lack of engine power, he says. “What we find, surprisingly enough, is the folks that are buying the car are quite satisfied with both of the powertrain offerings. The challenge for us is how do we get more folks to buy (the ILX), and that's where a powertrain change or improvement might assist us.”
The brand offers 4 car models and 2 cross/utility vehicles in the U.S., a slimmer lineup than many of its competitors. However, Accavitti says expansion isn’t in the cards, particularly with the CUV range.
Acura offered 3 CUVs until late last year, when it announced the midsize ZDX’s cancellation. As the B-segment CUVs increases in popularity, the brand is considering an entry in the segment. The BMW X1 and Buick Encore now are available in the U.S, and rumors suggest an Audi Q1 will arrive here soon.
At the recent Shanghai auto show, Acura showed a subcompact CUV concept for the Chinese market, with a production vehicle expected to follow. A similar model might be a fit for the U.S., “but right now we feel with the (midsize) RDX and the (large) MDX that we have this 1-2 punch,” Accavitti says, claiming no other luxury brand has the “strength of the lineup that we have.
“BMW has (the X3 and X5), but neither of those vehicles are very strong. Lexus just has the 1 (CUV), RX, and we kind of surround it.”

Acura to Debut Custom Performance Sedans at SEMA
11/05/2013 - Las Vegas, NV.
"How better to amp up the inherent luxury, excitement and prestige of the Acura Brand than to partner with the enthusiast crowd and create these custom RLX and ILX sedans," said Mike Accavitti, senior vice president of Auto Operations. "SEMA is where we go to add that little bit of spice that brings out the true performance character in our Acura lineup."
Acura engaged MAD Industries and Evasive Motorsports, both located in Southern California, to use Acura sedans as the platform to create even more exciting and dynamic custom vehicles.
2014 Acura RLX VIP Sedan
Evasive Motorsports created an Acura RLX VIP Sedan that is equally comfortable for daily commuting, or as a stylish upgrade for an evening on the town. The design includes a custom carbon fiber front bumper lip and vents, a modified rear bumper and fabricated exhaust system with titanium tips. Chargespeed side skirts combined with a deck lid spoiler and splash guards from Acura Genuine Accessories round out the body modifications. Nano-Fusion Film is used to protect paint on the front end. The wheels are 21-inch Advan F15 models wrapped in 245/35ZR-21 Continental ExtremeContact DW tires, both contributing to the VIP look. Prototype Tein Street Flex coilovers allow lowering of the RLX body. Four-pot Project Mu calipers and brake pads, and Evasive-spec brake rotors sit behind the front wheels. In the cabin, custom neck pillows wrapped in Jordan Brand-inspired elephant print add luxury and style.
Powertrain Modifications
The 2014 Acura RLX Urban Luxury Sedan, by MAD Industries, is designed to appeal to the driver looking for a performance luxury sedan for every day needs. For the exterior, an Acura Genuine Accessory decklid spoiler and 3M 1080 Scotchprint wrap film, in brushed black metallic with gloss black accents, create a bold but refined look. 3M Color Stable window film completes the appearance creating a modern urban style. Silver 22-inch Niche wheels wrapped in Nitto Invo tires add an aggressive element to the stance. Complementing the wheels, MPG custom satin black caliper covers finish off the exterior details. Inside, a contemporary feel is created by 3M brushed black metallic film door and trim accents.
Chassis/Suspension Modifications
The Acura Street Performance ILX, by MAD Industries, is designed to appeal to the enthusiast looking for a fun car that feels at home on city streets or a curvy mountain pass. Wrapped in matte copper metallic and accented by matte charcoal metallic 3M Scotchprint 1080 film, the ILX stands out from the crowd. Acura Genuine Accessories aero kit is tastefully matched to a set of 19-inch TSW Max wheels wrapped in Nitto NT05 Max high performance tires. Tein Super Street coilovers give the ILX an aggressive stance while improving dampening during spirited driving. Under the hood, a supercharger kit from CT Engineering and an ECU tune with Hondata's FlashPro helps the ILX's 2.4-liter Inline-4 pump out 250 wheel horsepower. The prototype SP Elite exhaust from Greddy adds a throaty exhaust note.

IIRC, the gains from the supercharger on the CL-S were similar, I believe due to the high compression ratio.

The MP90 was engineered for midsized fuel injected engines, ranging in displacement from 3.0 to 5.7 liters. Although it may be tempting, to install the largest possible blower that will fit under your hood, Magnuson's engineers recommend selecting the smallest supercharger that will provide your desired boost level. Remember, proper supercharger sizing ensures that your car will achieve boost at the lowest possible RPM, thus maintaining the responsiveness and street-ability of your engine’s power band.

^I think Sly Raskal touched on this already:

Basically, it's a supercharger that doesn't really super charge your car. ![Tomato](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/tomato.gif)
Well, it will probably super charge that price tag on already overpriced car.

Mountain out of a molehill :twocents:
It's merely a SEMA show car. This is not like the Mugen Civic Si, which was an entirely different and drawn out story.

Also, I know many of us want the most power possible, but CT has always been about increasing power without sacrificing the reliability of the car. They build their kits so that the car can be street driven and you won't have to worry about snapping a rod for example. Sure more power can [probably] be squeezed out of the motor; but, they gotta make a kit that is going to make a large majority of their buyers happy. Also, don't some Acura dealerships maintain factory warranty if they install their kits? Factory warranty and aftermarket support? Win-win in my book.

I am very surprised that Tein makes specific coilovers for RLX.
Checked website, nope they don't
So i guess RLX has pretty much the same suspension with Accord or TL?

some of the acurazine members have tuned, supercharged and turbocharged their acura's and make a lot more reliable hp than comptech ever did.
