why does my amp turn off when i turn the volume up?

why does my amp turn off when i turn the volume up? Do i not have enough power? Do i need a capacitor, would that fix the problem? Or is it my wiring?

here is my setup

Hifonics Brutus amp 1606 - 1600 watts rms @1 ohm, 1100 @2 ohm, 550@ 4ohm.
2 12" Alumapros 500 watts rms each @4ohm
-----------------
JL Cleansweep
Kicker Amp 4channel ZX.650
a/d/s 346cs 6.5 component speakers
Diamond Audio 6.5 Hi End Coaxial D661i speakers
-----------------

What do you guys think?

Is it going into protection mode? If so, it could be the wiring, or the amp. Hard to say.

First off, if you are running the subs at 2 ohm with 1,100 watts from your amp, I would seriously think about bigger wire than 8 awg. You really need 4 awg going to the amp with that much power.

It could be a short somewhere or a bad connection somewhere in the power or ground wires or even the speaker wires. Double check all your connections to make sure nothing is touching bare metal, except the ground of course.

Is a protection LED turning on? what volume level is it tripping? is the area around the amp well ventilated? If the weather has suddenly heated a lot, that lessens the gap your amp can heat up too. A lot of IC's are only good to 85C and protection circuits will shutdown prior to that temp.

maybe you need a cooling fan

Does this happen during first use or after it's been on awhile. Maybe the input gain on the amp is set too high.

i'm running the subs at 4 ohm so its 550 watts

Power protection, depending on the make and model, can also kick in if the voltage drops below a certain level. Also the documentation clearly indicates the usage of 4awg wire. I would suggest replacing the 8awg with 4awg wire and also replacing the ground wire from the battery to vehicle chassis and alternator positive to battery with 4awg wire as this is usually 6-10awg wire.

okay, i checked it. The amp is not going into protection mode, it just shuts off. Btw, for most part my my wires are 4 gauge, UNTIL it reaches the distribution block. My distribution block splits 4 gauge into 2-8 gauges, and each 8 gauge go into an different amp. One goes to my midamp, and the other goes into my sub amp.

Does this mean i gotta get like a 2 gauge wire? and then get a distribution block that goes from 2-4 gauge?

and what is my other option? can i just run another 4 gauge wire from the battery to my amps individually? or will that be too much wires lol?

I still might consider getting a multimeter and checking the voltage at the amp when it is to the point of shutting off. See if you are dropping to low in voltage.

for me this happened when the amp would overheat after a period of time... but if u are saying it is cutting out after initially raising it up, i am pretty sure it is a power issue... upgrade your lines, or turn your gains down and see if it still happens..

Have you talked to the amp manufacturers support people ? Some companies are horrible and takes forever to get valuable info, but some are spot on or at least know of problems like these ahead of time and you can get quick answers.

ok mines an alpine mrv-f340...
i wanted to bridge all channels to my 1 jlw6v2.. i've been looking everywhre but still dont know if i can do this....
only thing i keep finding is to bridge one 4ch to 2..
but i want to bridge 4ch to 1? since i only have one sub
and the total power output cointinuous would be 450 or so ...
anyhow i tried it just now and when i raise it to all the way up from the start it worked fine for a while..
i think it may have to something to do with heating up???
but its weird that this only started happening after i put in the 10w6v2.. with my old blaupunk sub it worked fine...
any ideas?

changed all the 8 gauge wires to 4 gauge, and added a capacitor, now it works like a charm

Congrats! I'm glad your system is working properly. I'm sure your battery is thanking you for the cap.

Was just reading through your thread and was gonna suggest switching to 4 awg and adding a cap, glad it's working for you now.
