Double layer DVD-R drive for $113 - time to reprogram the Navi DVDs?

Check it out
Now with this and the right media we should be able to burn a new Navi DVD, right? How sweet would it be to change the skin, add a different voicepack, etc. I don't know if I'm going to get this one right now (as it would be solely for the navi reason), but anyone out there in the market for a new drive should consider it.

you can find dual layer dvd burners for cheaper. alot of dvd burners are hackable into dual layer i believe.

try this one for example:

The media is damn expensive though...

Does the Nav DVD have that much data on it anyway? Has anyone looked? I don't have Nav so it doesn't matter either way for me... But it would be cool to have skins or other "mods" if possible...Heck, if someone spent enough time with it, they could probably write an MP3 player for it, if the proc is fast enough for software decoding? oh yeah, that got everyone thinking, hehe...

ALL you hackers amaze the hell out of me! If anyone can decode that DVD and change the skin, etc...I will be happy to pay YOU $100 for your services, and I will pay for shipping as well! The only one condition is...there must be wallpaper selections or themes with Anna kournikova, Halle Berry, and a different hotties for every day of the week.

I would soooo to you

Well maybe I'll take the DVD out when I have some time and see how it's written. This could either be fairly easy, or ridiculously hard... Vamos a ver.
One thing is for sure - once the basics are figured out it'd be real easy to make custom, built-to-order Navis so whoever does this first should have a good market on their hands.
The Navi DVD is definetley double layer though.

I have NEC one ($70), but have yet to find the media for it.

The disk is about 7 gigs, so you do need the DL burner. I am curious to see if anyone has made a copy of the disk with a DL burner. I will start messing around with hacking the disk once I know that the DVD-ROM drive in the Navi can read the DL disk! If anyone has done this, please share.

Tried that, no dice. The major files are too big.

hi all... i tried burning a dual layer dvd copy of the navi disc.... it doesnt work. when you put the burned disc into the dvd-rom it says "wrong disc version. contact your dealer." it seems as if there is something hidden within the original navi dvd that copy protects it. what a waste of money for the media...ugh.

How did you burn it? Did you make it mimic a DVD-ROM (as opposed to a DVD+R). My understnading is that it should work that way.

BTW, just a side note to all those doing DVD Movie rips on their DVD Writer...download the hacked firwares to remove the 2x extraction limit. On my two NEC drives (1300A, 2510A) I normally get 3x-6x depending on track position.

anyone interested in started another forum for software dvd hacks.. from what i read the system is based on windows ce, so the file naming conventions on the cd should match the joliet file naming standard hopefully so we can at least read it. But I think one of the things we should see if is a dvd-copy works on the dvd-rom.

It's entirely possible that the media that acura uses is very similar to DVD but may actually have some physical differences. Just like the CD-A discs that are required by CD-A recorders.

But did you actually set the book type to DVD-ROM? I think that is the key. Basically, this will allow a DVD+R to appear to the drive as a DVD-ROM. I suspect this is what the problems is.

I talked to a friend of mine that is big on the TL forum, and he says you can do it with the last generation TL nav systems, but you have to be very specific on how it is done, so I suspect it is the same here.
