Alpine Type R installed (2 pics)

Some people are always asking me what the type R installed looks like. Here are some pics I took recently. There's some room available between speaker and OEM grill with a 1 inch spacer, however I would not try to install anything deeper than the type R.

Tweeter direction is adjustable w/o any tool. I have not decided which way to have it pointing, yet.

They won't go that far down, though. Hence reflecting off the window to me seems like a good idea, too.

Who knows...

A little too bright for my taste. Make sure you listen to them in a store. I did in 3 occasions, but still am only 80% satisfied. I think the Infinity (second choice) would have been best for pop, dance and country. Techno, classical, and sountracks sound great.

Also beware the speakers need some metal cutting. Make a wise choice on who is installing these, if you decided to buy the type R.

In my experience, if you don't like bright, you don't like Infinity.

Do the xovers have OP settings? Can you knock the tweeter down a bit with them?

Also, try reversing the polarity with both tweets and see how you like the sound then - common trick to try in order to make up for discance between mid and tweet.

Good to know.

Yes, I believe they are set at -12db -- lowest possible. Still a bit bright -- much more than any speaker I've ever heard before.

Very interesting. I'll try that!

So how is your sound level per volume unit compared to the stock speakers?

Here's a trick I've never tried myself, but I was told about by a friend who was a sponsored IASCA competitor:

Get some clear window film (basically untinted window tint). I think you could get it at a tint shop. Cut out some squares really neatly, and put them on the windshield right over the tweeter.

With the amp I'm running, JL e4300, it will get pretty loud. The volume settings depend on the speed of the car. I can hear music at 9-11 nicely with the car in idle; or 14-17 at 60mph. I usually listen to music at 20-24, though (a bit loud for most people). I only go to 40 when listening to music from the AUX MP3 player, while going 60-80mph with the windows and moonroof open. However, the sound from the AUX player is much lower than the stereo CD player: about 1/3.

The best part about having aftermarket speakers is that the sound is not muffled like the OEM speakers. Any speakers will sound better than stock.
