Acura TLX Type S Reviews/Discussion

Looks like the only bone the Type S gets will be from the carcass of the even slower 2.0T.

He needs to add draggy to make these passes more credible. He refuses to do it. Some of these races do not add up. It would be nice to know wth these cars are running and how much the driver is affecting times as well.

He knows that if he shows the dragy numbers, then all his credibility goes out the window because whichever car he's in is substantially slower than the tested numbers. Maybe if he spends less time screaming "COME ON!!!" and "WHAT!?!?!?!?" whenever he gets passed and instead focuses on driving better he wouldn't have to be so afraid of being exposed.

Maybe he's a good guy in real life, but the way he comes off in the videos is cheesy and feels like he's trying too hard to be cool and "dramatic". That and he uses more hyperbole than Jonny Lieberman but without the wit. I respect that he's doing something that not many other channels other than TH or Mat Watson does, but the execution and charisma is lacking.

Seems like he has a group of key words that get over used. As long as you know what car he is in you know which car won with your eyes closed. Just like any heading in England useing the words "Brave England" you knew the English team lost.

I am assuming he is borrowing other people's car for these tests. Wonder if any of them are not stock from a tune perspective.

It's safe to say when you're not an Acura event, hosted by Acura, paid by Acura, all expense paid by Acura.. the S4 pulls bus lengths on the TLX-S in something we call the real world. Gotcha.
So please less talk. More drive.![Loser](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/loser.gif)

Maybe Acura will produce it for a year or two and cease its production. Honestly, I think this could be the final generation of the TL/TLX.
Good chance the next sedan in this space (for Acura) will be electric anyway.

Either they get with it and go back to their roots or just end the Type-s badge all together.

Scary part is that the debut of the 11G Accord isn’t too far in the future; depending on execution, it could be the final corporate nail in the TLX coffin. (Hopefully they don’t make it as God awful ugly as the 10G)

They made a good point though. Acura advertised it like it's going against the German competition. They pointed out it really shouldn't against them but against cars like the G70 and Kia Stinger. But still has less power. Then the weight too...
Up the boost(you have forged internals Acura). Loose 500lbs. Fix the transmission(I've seen a few people talk about it shifting by itself when using the paddle shifters).
Like stated above. It's a car for the Acura fans.

They’re not going to increase engine output nor cut any curb weight. A MMC may see a return to touchscreen interface and possibly a HUD but I anticipate nothing different on the performance front for this generation.

That was a bad look for Acura being beaten by a car with less power.

Between this and some of the issues (on and off track) I've been reading about with the CTR, this whole Honda/Acura performance thing is losing a lot of luster...

Wow, I'm not so much surprised about how it fared against the S4 (Audi has less weight, more power [despite their claimed HP], better transmission and drivetrain) ... but how much they hated it around corners. SH-AWD can only help so much ... tho they weren't too fond of that either. Overall, you simply can't get away from the heft of the car.
Silver lining, its hot lap did substantially better than the Golf R and basically the same as a Challenger Redeye ... so even though they didn't like it, it's in pretty good company and actually fared well by the actual numbers.
Hopefully, with these "real" reviews starting to come out, the hyped-up demand is extinguished for this car and discounts can be had once the market stabilizes. 10-12+% off sticker and this car, even with its deficiencies, will be hard to ignore. Hopefully the aftermarket can reliably get this boat to over 400wHP.
Then again, if Honda does release a DCT in the next gen CTR, I'm going to have to research how difficult it is to remove that asinine picnic table spoiler and scour the country for dealers who will actually sell it for sticker.

doug and throttle house are only the few reviews I’ve heard hate the driving dynamics me on the other hand was impressed and I was ripping it through a school parking lot. Also, was TH trying to get the back end to spin out? Because if he was the SHAWD wasn’t designed that way.
I also agree with TH on the power which is fast until you compare it head to head but to be honest I didn’t feel that much of a difference when I test drive the Audi. I don’t think Acura needs to increase the HP I think they just need to reduce the weight but We won’t see any changes for a while given Acura’s track record on refreshes.
I still don’t get why people state they would get the accord over type s when it’s in a whole different class. There is nothing attractive about an accord inside or out when you compare it to an Acura. Although the accord is peppy it felt dead to me after 50mph and up.
imo, I still don’t know what’s the best all round car in this class for me in terms of styling and performance 🤷

Do elaborate? Aside from people shattering wheels left and right due to stupidly oversized wheels with rubber band sidewalls (didn't Acura brag about how they put 20" wheels on the Type-S?), I haven't heard too many bad things about the CTR ...

Also, there's a surprisingly high number of reports of 2nd gear griding issues, and 3rd and 4th gear lockout on a daily occurrence on the forums. For a car in such limited production, these reports are pretty concerning. I believe this was also mentioned by C&D for their long term tester.

What's the difference when you purchase a used vehicle or one that a "performance" variant.. It's the chance you take. People beat the shit out of loaners and rentals all the time so what's the difference? Someone still buys them.
#991
How so? They rung it around a track? There are people arguing on the internet about how the Type-S "wasn't meant for straight line performance, but will shine on a track." They weren't drifting it around corners or neutral dropping it. They were driving it hard around a track ... which if you purchased a Type-S, is the whole point of buying it. My RDX has seen the speed limiter several dozen times. It's why I got the car over its anemic cousin, the CR-V. It's still slow, but at least has some power to have some fun with. If you're buying a used Type-S thinking it was driven like a used Buick LaCrosse, you're more delusional than the people who actually believed the Type-S was going to be a "rocket ship."

On shorter tracks and on warmer days (80F) the car overheats at the track. This was reported both by C&D and pretty extensively in the CivicX forums.

Overheating was corrected during MMC. However, 2nd gear grind was never corrected, addressed or even admitted. Every single person, from service advisor, to tech, to warranty rep, to customer service rep, to regional manager, to dealership service director, you name it, they'll all say you're the first one to complain about the grind. They'll say it didn't do it on their drive, put in their internal documents it's driver error (super easy to do to customers with manuals) and send you packing. They'll do this until warranties die off. You can sue. And you'll lose. You hire a two-bit bus bench lawyer. Honda has 50 world class attorneys on retainer. My first 2.0T 6MT Accord had the grind. Got in an accident 2 weeks into ownership and sold it afterwards for a new one. Test drove this one extensively and it didn't grind. Had two grinds in over 2 years. I'm 99% sure both were my fault. Second one I had slippers on and I don't think I had clutch all the way in. But the first one I owned, it grinded on every fast shift, and I made sure like crazy clutch was fully in. Sold it before it was addressed, which I tried next day after purchase. 3 trips in 2 weeks. Test driving after they "adjusted" it is what led to the accident, snow, dark, slippery, me not focused. Had 640 miles on it. Dealer gave me trade like it didn't have accident, took $3400 off new one with 2 miles and I was happy. Still am 2+ years later.

So the "experts" here that get taken to task with, "wait for the SHAWD best in class" track killer, were proven right. Oh, the humanity!!! Its a great cruiser, commuter car, grocery getter, but not a sports sedan. Thank god for the Golf, Veloster N, MX-5 or it would have been dead last. Now you know why the swapped brake pads out during the Big Reveal at LS.
Just like the staged drag race they cheated with a bunch of clueless YouTubers. Been happing for years with Acura hosted media event going back to 4G's. Its easier to advertise against the Germans than actually run against them. In fact it will be interesting to see how the car does against the guys they should be matched against.

The brits are known for quality and reliability…said nobody ever. I’m not sure if I’d trust a Mexican built Honda or British built Honda more. Glad to see the 11G HB is moving back stateside.

The goal post keeps moving if you read Acura fanboy comments. Before it was this thing will be a beast and as fast as the S4 since they are testing it against it. Now it’s a tune will solve all issues!!!(Good luck with reliability after tuning an unproven engine) 0-60 times don’t matter and I can’t use all the power anyway lol. The newest excuse is , at least it will be more reliable than the Germans. Even though reliability has NOT been proven with this new engine and Acura is tied with BMW in reliability and they are already having issues with the 10 speed auto.

…and if this forum is any indication, there aren’t many of those (read: Acura fans) remaining. (If the Accord wasn’t so unattractive, I would have opted for a Touring over my A-Spec and called it a day.)

The Accord Touring 2.0t has all the features people want in the even the advanced Type S. And more space too. And for $8k less with some added accessories, I'll have the HUD and heated/ventilated seats. Lol.

Yep. I would honestly say the 330i and A4 are more competition for the Type S than the M340i and S4. Crazy thing is both models would still end up being around the same cost of the Type S to give it the same kind of features.

The Type S needed to compete with the S4. It's embarrassing that Acura's V6T sports sedan has performance more similar to an Audi A4 or Honda Accord than every car in its segment. Everyone involved in the project should lose their jobs is how badly they failed with this thing because it's going to cost the company a colossal amount of money in lack of sales and wasted R&D and many fans that are disgusted by the poor showing will be moving onto the Germans. A failure at every level.
On top of dealers marking them up $10k+.
They marketed it wrong for sure. Putting it against cars they obviously should have known it would lose against.
