So, I'm in the process of doing a mild build on my '11 FWD and I've run into a few questions that have yet to be definitely answered. With my build I'm trying to focus on working with the J35's strengths and increasing the top end HP.
My mod list is:
J37 TB & IM port matched with lower runners (going on soon)
J-pipe
HFPC
custom exhaust - res + MM delete & magnaflow 11225's - stock sizing
AF Dynamics SRI
KTuner
also thinking about:
UR lightweight crank pulley
Web/bisimoto cams
milling heads for higher CR ~12:1
With that out of the way, the first piece of advice I'm looking for is about intakes.. I installed my SRI so that the J37 IM/TB would
fit on the car. I've run into a couple of people saying that they bought intake piping for the 3.7 stock airbox which fits on the 3.5 airbox.
I don't feel that the low end on my car is lacking too much right now, but since I'm trying to focus on the higher end of the rev range
should I keep my SRI, go back to the stock intake system, or some custom work?
The second bit of advice I'm looking for is advice on my exhaust... Right now it sounds pretty good, I've posted a short video clip
of it on here a few times. The two issues I'm having with the exhaust note are that 1) there's a shitload of low frequency drone
in the cabin between 1.5-2k and 2) there's a little too much rasp for my taste.
I already have a dynomax resonator from an exhaust setup that I had planned to do a while back, would installing that help
with the drone and the rasp? I've heard resonators don't help as much with the low drones.
Since you are doing all that work, you might as well buy the best intake available... Which is this DIY 4" intake
I know the intake I'm running right now is a 3.5" SRI. Is there room in the 4G engine bay for a 4" intake like that?
I'm guessing it's just routed to the right of the battery with all the stock piping removed?
I could see something like [coupler > 90* bend pipe > straight coupler > filter] working for me.
What about mounting for the MAF sensor and PCV pipe?
IATs do get pretty hot if you're idling in one place but honestly once you get going it's not an issue. Really just got it so that I could upgrade to the 3.7 IM/TB.
The diy 4" intake with tuning, made more power than aem cold air intake.
you're doing all this work, might as well do the DIY intake...
Oh and while you're at it, throw in the p2r manifold spacer.
With a tune, you gain massive torque mid-range
Will I need to custom make a bracket for the MAF and plug the PCV pipe?
Doesn't the manifold spacer lose a little power up top?
I guess if I'm going with the spacer I'll need to send my gasket down to the guy who did my PnP to match it to my runners and IM.
Dammit, I'm ready to start installing these mods lol.
Found a MAF mount made for 4" intake piping. Now about that PCV... Would it be easier to add a nipple for the hose onto the intake piping or to just get a catch can/breather filter?
More air; more power! P2r intake manifold spacer!
might as well put a catch can on it lol
Yeah, from NvrDwn's posts on v6p, seems like installing a nipple for the pcv hose would be a huge PITA. Time for a little ebay-ing... My spare bedroom is about to be filled with car parts lol.
Well I got my battery in today.. sort of lol. I had ordered a Deka ETX18L but was sent an EXT16L. Gonna try it anyway, hopefully it'll crank her up. Not too worried about CCA here since I've never seen 0*F weather. Should take the battery from ~40 lbs to ~17 lbs. Should also give me quite a bit of room to fit my intake in.
Do it man! I've been thinking about leaving my exhaust as is instead of adding the resonator. I'd rather deal with the drone than lose out on the crackles and pops I get on deceleration.
a 3G, which I just bought Hondata Flashpro for it, last month! LOL
it was quite expensive being an older car, had to buy a type-s ECU, etc.
now you and my tuner are persuading me to complete it with DIY intake and Intake manifold spacer
My KTuner flash wasn't cheap but the Hondata is over a grand, isn't it?
Do you have the 3.7 mani and TB? From what I've heard the 4" intake really takes advantage of the increased airflow.
The guy who did my PNP is wanting me to get the car on a dyno before and after I install the runners, manifold and throttle body
so my plan right now is to work out the intake while I'm still stock. Intake was around $75 without a filter.
- bored throttle body
- PnP Intake Mani
- Pre-cat deletes
- Jpipe
- Dual exhaust (the 4G SHAWD came stock with a dual exhaust, I bought the RV6 dual exhaust, so the Jpipe is the merge, then it splits into two)
my tuner said the DIY 4" intake will add power!!!!
he joked "are you scared of the torque the manifold spacer will give you?" lol

Oh yeah, it'll definitely add power with those mods. Wish the 4G FWD had true dual exhaust. I'm expecting a decent power bump from 4" intake. Also need to make friends with someone who does fabrication and machine work.. lol
ya know, I watch Boostedbois on youtube and Kyle makes it seem so easy to weld and make shit for his boosted civic wagon, boosted civic hatch, and boosted mini van.

i want to turbo mine!
Wish I could afford to turbo mine. I've seen a couple of turbo accords and such running 500+ wheel. You'd have to REALLY feather the throttle with FWD and a turbo.
Here's the intake so far. Still gotta cut the piping a bit and find someone to weld on the plate for the MAF sensor. Hopefully I'll be putting the Deka in tomorrow.

So I figured I'd keep things in this thread instead of starting a new one or reviving another old thread. Changed my fogs out for Hoen endurance bulbs. V-LED reverse lights and license plate lights are on the way, roof spoiler will be on the way later this week too. Been thinking about picking up some Tein SBZ's and a Progress sway bar OR getting an a-spec lip kit. I'll probably end up picking up a lip-kit first since most of the fun I have with my car is in straight lines.
