CAI extends the intake pipe down below to suck in colder air, since it gets pretty hot inside the engine bay. Colder air = denser air = more power. Plus it doesn't have a resonator or anything that restricts the air flow, so there's more of colder air being deliver to the engine.

And because it gets rid of the resonator, it makes the engine sound louder, especially in VTEC mode. However, it's a major power adder. I mean, it does yield some power, but nothing amazing. But the sound is great.

You can get one for about 185 shipped online, and install it yourself if you know your way around cars. It's not that hard of a job, really. Three hundred installed is a ridiculous price, since most shops I've heard of and seen charge around 50 bucks for installation.

Upgrading intake should have a bit more consideration than just added sound. If you are modifying to make the engine suck in more air, then you should also consider making it expel better (exhaust). If you add better intake capability then the car should also "breathe out" better.

What I'm afraid of is an expense of about $400 or so with negligible results other than a wilder growl at WOT. I've seen many of those ricers with noticeable CAI mods thinking they are running faster because the car makes more engine noise, and they're still standing still.

It goes from a larger tube that overlaps the smaller tube creating sound waves in the larger tube which supply an even charge throughout the entire rpm range from the cylinder heads.

i just got the AEM CAI and it is awesome. looks beautiful, and self install was completely simple. change out some rubber pipes and take out stock airbox. so happy that resonator is out... and i didn't need to remove the bumper either. if you need any help on install, anyone with a CAI could help, since most people do their own installs on the basic bolt-on's.

Comptech IceBox - All the way!

Icebox with out a doubt.

You get the benefits of the cold air set up, but none of the spikeyness or super volumn from the other straight pipe CAI's. Additionally, there is no chance for you to suck up water.

The actual filter remains in the engine bay, while you get a large diameter smooth tube extending down into the bumper. The end is belled for smooth air flow.

It looks VERY stock.

This is WELL worth a couple extra bucks.

Icebox is great, Im sure, but it doesn't have the "ooh, ahh" factor when you pop the hood.

Oh, and in my first post, I meant to say that it was NOT a major power adder. I mistyped. :o

Vicman --

Yes, I completely agree with you on the "breathe in better, breathe out better" concept. I mean, that's what it all comes down to. Move air in and out faster and you'll get more power. But the CAI doesn't exactly double your intake flow or anything.

In my case, I knocked off two-tenths of a second in the 1/4-mile with the CAI. Then I knocked off half a second in the quarter after putting headers on. I think that's about it, though, for our cars. I believe our exhaust system (from the B-pipe and on) is already quite free-flowing and only has minimal gains from axleback or catback exhaust systems.

I mean, there ARE gains from modding the exhaust system (B-pipe and back) and I won't argue with that. But it's probably not going to be worth it unless either you have to have the sound, and/or you have a lot of money. Which I don't in either case.

People have dynoed other exhaust systems and found that the gains were around 2hp - or within the margin of error of the dyno.

Getting an aftermarket exhaust system to power is not needed on a TL-S.

Search......................Search................ .......Search

Alot of info has already been posted about intakes. Based on what I read, I went with the Icebox, for less noise, better performance, ease of cleaning, and less risk of hydrolock all in a CAI.

Keep in mind the maintenance of CAIs. Most CAI - Injen, AEM - put the filter behind the bumper. To clean it, you need to get behind the bumper - either by popping off the bumper or going in the wheelwell and under the car. With the Icebox, the box is in the engine bay so you just clean the filter the same way you change the stock air filter.

I guess something for you to keep in mind when choosing one. Dunno how mechanically skilled you are, but if you can change the oil yourself, then cleaning the Injen or AEM filter should be a snap.

That's BS man there is no way the CT icebox pushes out more than the V2. I guarantee if you switched them you would feel a huge gain with the AEM V2. It outperforms the regular CAI by around 8 hp. That's a huge margin right there. The CT icebox is something like 15 hp (correct if I'm wrong). But the V2 is the best CAI system on the market as of now.

ok so you say the V2 is the best system out there but i got one question for you is there a v2 that is designed for a TYPE S? SO yes the CT is the best in terms of gains!

ok ok you weren't clear and neither was I. One flaw of a Type S lol I have a TL-P and V2 is the shit! Besides even in a TL-P the V2 has more signigicant gains than a Type-S with CT Icebox.

If you go with an intake for the Type S go with the Injen CAI. Its louder down low and up top than the aem, and doesnt have the annoying hum. Also In my opinion a set of obx headers for 400 installed is way better than an intake. You get much more power with the headers.
