Sad Day.....Wife Wrecked My TL

I got a phone call this evening from my wife crying because she had just rear ended someone in my SH-AWD TL. She's okay, which is all the matters. Even better, she said that in a 35 mph impact she didn't feel a thing. The driver's side airbag deployed but according to her the seatbelt held her so tight to the seat she experienced no whiplash and is amazed at how well the car protected her.

Now begins the claims process and figuring out repair times, or if they'll total it out. Uggghhhh.

Whiplash can take a few days to feel. I bet she will have a stiff neck tomorrow! Hope she is o.k, and don't give her a hard time about it! It's just a car (can't believe I'm saying this.. LOL) and that's what insurance is for!

Pics?

Thanks guys! She is a Physician Assistant so she is going get examined at work tomorrow but she swears she's okay and extremely mad that she wrecked my car. She loved it as much as I did and was planning to drive it daily when I get something new in the future.

I'll post some pics in the next couple days. Hard to see due to the dark and the car being black. There were quite a few cracks in the front bumper and the "beak" is cracked in half. Didn't look like enough damage to total the car out but I'm not sure what 35mph can do to a car. Either way, I'm extremely impressed with how safe it kept her.

What? why?

4Gers are not like 3Gers at all.

Glad your wife is okay, Devil Dog.

Sorry to hear. Glad you are a good attitude about it (as good as can be expected for a car nut).

All that matters is she's alright. Just get the car fixed, drive it for awhile and get your use out of it and then trade for something else. Life goes on.

Sorry to hear about the car but glad your wife is ok - a 35-mph crash is nothing to sneeze at and speaks highly of the protection our TL's provide. Let us know what the insurance company says.

Nope, she wasn't doing anything distracting but she is a woman driver. Which of course means she can be doing nothing and still not be paying attention.

I'm headed to the Acura Body Shop today and will take some better pictures than the ones I got last night. Insurance company won't be able to look at it until Tuesday due to the holiday.

If they just repair it then I'll probably look to trade it in soon. If they total it (which I doubt) then I'll buy a cheap car until the 5G comes out and see what's available.

Thanks again for all the good wishes everyone!!

Have her get examined well. But truth be told I never let my wife drive my TL just for this reason.

Like others, I'm glad your wife came out okay...hopefully there's nothing that pops up later as an issue.

Years ago, I remember being at a small gathering, and as it was mostly women, the topic turned to attributes of the "ideal man". I'll never forget how one girl said that she wanted a guy that, when she came home and said, "honey, I wrecked the car", the only answer was "that's okay, so long as you're not hurt". All the women present agreed.

So, at the risk of being coarse, I hope your response was, "that's okay, so long as you're not hurt...though I did love that car...maybe it's time to try some of that stuff you've been hesitant to do?".

Sex has nothing to do with accidents. Men have just as many dumb shit/not paying attention moments as women.

That's so not true, have you seen the studies they've done on this? If not, do yourself a HUGE favor.

Please show us a reputable study that shows your point. Sex has something to do with accidents (but not the way you think), which is why male drivers under 25 pay a much higher rate than women drivers under 25.

Put your money where your mouth is and show us the study you're bragging about.

I was wrong, men have MORE accidents than women

That's TWICE as many

Waiting for someone to say why those studies don't count followed by personal anecdotes that fail to prove a point.

Then again, how do you argue with someone from the city of angles

You mean the dirtbags that backed into his wife?

If the accident was fairly minor and everyone just got out and exchanged information I can see how the OP would never think to mention it here. I would not read anything into that.

Wow man, what's up your ass? If there were any kind of injuries at all I would have mentioned them, and since you don't know me in the slightest how about you refrain from assumptions of selfishness?

Front end post accident. Quite a bit of cracking and it's hard to tell but the bumper is barley handing on. Fog lights don't work and one headlight is out (not pictured). Initial look by the Acura Collision center says there is some very minimal frame damage and they'll know more Monday.

That will buff out no problem Glad to hear your wife is ok.

A couple years ago mine pulled in the garage and slung her door open into my at the time new Z06. I did much better than she expected. I didn't yell and was able to buff her paint off of my mirror. The best part of the story is she at first blamed me for pulling up further than normal since her door shouldn't have hit my mirror. Parking outside for a month in the middle of summer quickly showed her the error of her thinking.

Wow looks like the car held up very well. Too bad the airbag deployed. That will probably be the most expensive thing to replace.

Doesn't seem like much damage at all. I don't see why you would trade it in. Once it's fixed you won't even be able to tell it was in an accident and YES it will drive the same as when it was new. It's not like the front end was smashed like a beer can.

My original plan was to hand it down to my wife in a couple years and trade in her TSX on something new for me. You think that's still a good idea?
I just worry that little things will start to go wrong down the road due to the accident and by then the car would be out of warranty. Right now it's covered bumper to bumper for 100k by the dealership and I spoke with them on Saturday and they confirmed that the warranty would be valid to whomever I sold the car to....I figured that would be peace of mind for a new buyer.

I don't have any experience in the long term effects of an accident on a newer vehicle.

The toughest part for you will be the mental challenge. Everything could be fine, but you'll know what happened, and any new noise you hear will cause you distress, or any time the car doesn't behave like you think it should you'll blame the accident out loud when it most likely has nothing to do with it.

I was in your shoes back in 2006, and I know I couldn't get over the worry so I traded - remarkably the accident didn't affect my trade-in value.

Only you can decide, but glad your wife is alright

Yes it'll drive just fine after the repair and the damage will be invisible - but - the repair will be far more expensive than you may think. I suspect the radiator mount is toast which also may mean new headlights and other under hood stuff.

There is no cheap repair any more. The force of the impact had to be dissapated somewhere and that is why there are crumple zones and breakaway parts all over the car - many aren't visible.
