No engine filter replacement for A1 service

Good deal! I am about to do the 2nd oil change on my car and realized that there is no need to replace the oil filter for "A" symbol services. Oh well for wasting the original factory filter... For this time, I guess I will change again so I can align with the Maintenance Minder

Some people don't care about it but for me, I replace my oil filter every time I replace my oil. I don't see the point in replacing oil and having a dirty oil filter trying to filter the new oil.

Always change the filter with the oil... they are not that expensive, and it just seems logical.

I thought the OP said engine filter ... lol

But yeah just change oil filter whenever you change the oil. I have no idea why Acura recommends every other oil change.

I never use the maintenance minder system - seems unnecessary to me.

Oil (Penzoil Platinum 5w20) + Filter (Mobil1 M-104)

I just bought 4qts of Acura ATF, 3qts of Acura DPSF, and will be buying 1qt of Amsoil Severe Gear 75w90.

Car has 22k miles on it and I haven't seen a single maintenance minder. For the extra $10 for a filter I'd rather just do it for peace of mind.

Acura has had this since the 3G TL in 2004 but it's been more of avoided advice. I wouldn't recommend holding onto the old filter when changing the oil.

The old filter holds 1/3 or so of a quart of oil. That dirty oil is going to mix with your new, clean oil. Also you'll be more prone to burning oil since the old oil has degraded already!

Replace the filter every time the minder says to perform an oil change and you'll be set!

Sorry, for the engine filter in the title... didn't know what I was thinking when typing.

I am getting more lazy and perhaps getting old... With this second try, I will see if I can fit a Fumoto Valve on with various of extension adapters added. Our car sits low and the filter is not the easiest to get to, that's why I thought the "every other change" being an interesting attribute.

On another thought...my parents own a 13 Accord with the same verbiage in the manual and it has less than 1k miles on it. However, the car is going to get its 2nd oil change (for the annual change rather than the mileage). With the calculated risk...can the filter change be skipped with just drain and refill?

Again, sorry for all the unfiltered/disorganized brain dump and mixed thoughts.

So your parents own a brand new ~$22-31k car but don't want to spring for the $10 oil filter? Might as well cut your insurance to liability only, you know, to save some money.

Can you skip it? Sure, and you'll save $450 over the course of 90,000 miles (assuming $15 filter, 30 oil changes, 3k intervals). Technically, if you follow the maintenance minder, I bet those intervals are closer to 5k (or more) which means even more savings - bumps it up to 150,000 miles.

The peace of mind alone knowing that you don't have to worry about the filter's condition is worth that $450.

Regarding the valve, I had/have one for my S2000. You're going to need a fairly long ~2" extension for it to fit. Though I don't see it saving you much time as you'll still have to get under the car to open it up. The S2000 you could reach from the engine bay.

I genuinely don't understand why people buy a ~$30k car and then skimp on simple maintenance items.

More than 50 years of cars, change oil, change filter. Oil and filters are cheap, engines are expensive.

The easiest way to get the filter is to turn the wheel so you can get a wrench around it and easier access. Put a ziploc over the filter to catch the oil inside!

As far as the 1K oil, change the filter too. Oil gets acidic as it ages so that acidic oil that's been eating at the filter is going to get circulated back around with the new oil diluting it!

TheMuffinman I like the way you think..I use
Oil (Pennzoil Ultimate 5w20) + Filter (Royal Purple 10-2867, AMSOIL Ea® Oil Filters EA15K, or Mobil1 M-104)
and just changed to Amsoil Severe Gear 75w90.

Realized my math was wrong, I originally did it assuming you never replace the filter. Assuming you replace the filter every other oil change you actually save even less.

$15 filter, 30 oil changes (filter every other), 3k intervals and you only save $225 bucks over 90k miles.

I do a tire rotation on every oil change. The filter is pretty easy to access once you have the passenger side front wheel off.
