Lucas oil additive

What are thoughts on Lucas oil additive? I have a loud, intermittent clicking noise coming from what sounds like the valve train / top end of J37

It could be a few things but wait before you use additives.

J37 tends to burn oil, so if the oil was low and engine was run there could be damage. Commonly, it's the rear cam that can be eaten up and cause noise. It could be as simple as your valves needing adjustment but you will have to do some research first. How are oil levels? Any burning?

Bought the car 6 months ago and was unaware of oil consumption issue, found out about it when my mechanic noticed it was 2 qts low. Took it for oil consumption test, I’m about 1000 miles in and it’s miraculously not burning much oil now, maybe half a qt. So it’s entirely possible there is damage from previous owner being unaware of low oil. I should mention this noise only takes place when sitting at rest in gear for approximately 5 minutes, goes away as soon as I put it into neutral or park. Would that eliminate the valve train? Am I able to post video on this site? I have good audio of it

You need to see to it that it fails the oil consumption test and gets fixed by Acura. IDC what you have to do but see to it that it 'burns' enough to qualify.

acura dealers love to "overfill" the oil by .5 quart to help engines pass the test....

I actually checked it right at the dealership, with the service rep because I had read about that before hand.... it was right on the mark, I questioned whether they used a thicker oil though, would that make a difference? Also, how prevalent is this oil consumption for these motors? Rep told me they had 11 out of thousands. Obviously done believe him, just curious what the reality is

if you have a 2010-2013, it's a 50% chance it will burn oil now, and def a chance later. Use a good quality oil (5W-20 or 5W-30) and change every 7K miles MAX, I'd advise 5K.

yeah, the piston rings that scrape oil tend to clog up with carbon buildup. This makes them less effective at oil scraping and allows it to burn.

Seems like the oil burning is not detrimental to the engine as long as you continue to check the oil level and top it off when needed. I've been burning 1qt per 1k miles since I bought the car at 72k miles, now at 120k miles and no problems from the oil burning. Like csmeance said above changing the oil at 5k miles is a good idea since by then I've already replaced over half of the original oil. I was also denied on the warranty repair for oil burning in 2018 so it's not like I have a choice lol.

BKexpress - sounds like you are losing oil pressure when at a low idle in gear, engine hot. Any chance you may have a weak oil pump?

Es-929 - It is encouraging to see how many trouble free miles you have added in spite of the oil issue. Do your exhaust outlets look “sooty” or clean?

Yes there is soot on my exhaust tips. I'm assuming it is from the oil that slips past the clogged piston rings and getting burned up with the fuel. I will come back to this thread if I run into any issues having to do with oil burning.

Update: 16oz of Marvel Mystery Oil in my crank case about 500 miles before an oil change and over 3000 miles since the oil change I have not burned a drop. Insane how spending $10 on a lubricant was the answer to this problem but I ain't mad.
