Cargo Protector

I've got a cargo tray and I was thinking of getting a cargo protector.

From the picture and description it seems like it must be a multi-piece item, similar in texture to the cargo tray, and which covers all the carpeted surfaces in the cargo area other than the floor which is covered by the cargo tray. (ie: the walls and the backs of the second row seats)

Does anyone here have one of these? If so can you tell me if it looks nice and stays on easily? Some pics would be lovely since the one from Acura (see below) does not show a ton of detail.

How much use do you think you will get out of using the extra space from the 2nd row down? For my 19 MDX with capt chairs, I have $17 6X8 tarp folded up under my tri-fold cargo tray. I used that to cover my folded capt chairs AND protect the center console when needed for Home Depot or dump runs.

Cargo Protector

First post here. Picked up my 2022 MDX Advance Liquid Carbon Metallic/Ebony interior about a week ago. I tried to order the Cargo Protector but it appears that the flat part on the floor comes standard with the Advance. The sales people appeared confused as to why I wanted to add the protector as shown in the picture when it came standard, but without the second row backseat cover. I do not know if one can order the 2nd row seat back protectors separately. The one that came with the Advance looks exactly like the one in the picture except for the absence of the seat back protectors. It does look nice but appears to be designed for use when the third row seat is down. It looks rather awkward when the third row seat is up.

Also, the reversible rear cargo area that drops down into a useable shallow tray area should suit most needs unless you need the third row down, no?

I have the older style cargo protector (canvas like material) that fits over the back of the second row seats and attaches with velcro along the sides in the back for my 2010 MDX. We find it very handy for hauling plants in the spring and trash to the dump, etc. Easy to clean too. I wish they offered one like that for the 2022. I wouldn't be too keen about having the dealer drilling / punching holes in my interior with this new style protector. We will be shopping for a new 2022 MDX in early summer.

The piece that lays flat on the bottom is called a Cargo Tray. That's sold separately. If they gave you one when you got your Advance that was a dealer gift because it's not standard.

The Cargo Protector is 4 pieces - one for the back of each of the second row seats and one for each side (wall) of the cargo area. Basically the combination of those 4 pieces (plus the Cargo Tray which you already have) covers all of the carpeted surfaces of the cargo area when your third-row seats are down. At least that's my understanding of it.

Yes most. I'm thinking mainly of when I've got the third row down and I'm carrying my dog back there. Her hair sticks to the carpeted surfaces.

Well that's part of my question - does it just kinda "snap" into place or do you have to permanently alter the existing surfaces to make it stay?

Thanks for straightening me out. I was confused by the term "tray". I expected something with sides looking a bit like a container. You are right. I got the tray for free then. In addition they gave me the all-weather mats. I also got the $1000 loyalty discount off MSRP and a $450 discount. I guess I got a decent deal. Didn't have to haggle. The dealership just did it.

I had the Cargo Protector on my list of options I wanted the dealership to install (I had it in both my 2017 and 2019 RDX Advances), but ended up not getting it this time. Frankly, for me -- based on my use case in the last 5 years -- it's a bit of an overkill. I've always had cargo trays as well, and they've been plenty protective. The main things I've had in my cargo area have been groceries; bags of mulch/topsoil/landscaping stones; stuff you pack for trips (suitcases/backpacks, dog beds and carriers, food hampers); small furniture; etc. If you think you need it based on your lifestyle, by all means, it might be a good investment.

I just know I've had a tendency to splurge on accessories, including this time, so paying for one less thing that I don't think I'll miss anyway is a very good thing.

Yeah the $1,000 came from Acura so your dealer can't take credit for that. The $450 and the tray & mats definitely came from the dealer. The tray and mats retail for $335 combined, so that means the dealer probably paid about $200 for them. So there's roughly $650 the dealer gave you. That's good for a vehicle that is selling as fast as they can get them in. But of course they might be taking it back from you on "doc fees." A lot of dealers charge $500 - $1,000 in documentation fees which is nothing but fluff. Really just added profit for the dealer. Of course they hide it buy lumping it together with the tag fee which they pay to the state to register your vehicle, but if you look at your deal closely you can see the breakout of the two.

So then you actually to have to drill into the car to install these things? Okay that settles it for me. I'm not getting them. I'll be fine with just the tray.

You drill into the plastic pseudo cloth lined panels to install snaps

Yes, it's either you do it yourself, or pay the dealership to drill the same for you.
