Hi all

I am about to take delivery of the Acura TL Type-S 2008
and I have to install (MANDATORY in Quebec) winter tires on 17" steel rims WITHOUT any TPMS sensors.

Besides having the TPMS message, My previous car (TSX 2007) worked fine last winter without having the sensors installed on steel rims.

The dealer (Acura) warned me if I don't install the sensors on the TL-S with the winter tires, I can expect problems with the anti-skating, VSA and even eventually get the car to a stall ??!

Anyone tried the TL or TL-S (2007 and earlier) without the sensors last winter ? Did you encounter any problems beside the "TPMS" warning ? thanks for ur assistance.

i ran last winter with snows and no TPMS, yes the warnings came up, yes one push of the button it was gone and no VSA problems.

You'll be fine without the TPMS.

However, I'm wondering...are Canadian cars exempt from the "All cars after 2006 are mandated to have some sort of TPMS law?" Why haven't they addressed or updated that yet, since it is standard on all USDM cars?

thanks for you comments, this is reassuring, I couldn't believe the recommendations from the lady at the Acura parts counter.

TPMS is not yet mandatory but winter tires must be mounted between dec15 to mar15 from now on

any impact on anti-skating functions ?

you shouldnt have any problems and when you put them back on they will automatically reprogram

Yeah, in quebec the winters are VERY bad... so winter tires are now mandatory. We are not allowed to use all-seasons anymore.
Technically, disco, you can run your all seasons [if you have] if you want. I assume that the odds of getting caught are low. Although... it is better to have winter tires for safety reasons.

I believe you don't need 'steel rims' [assuming you are talking about steelies]. I'm sure it'd be fine for you to use the OEM Rims.
I don't know much about TPMS or this 'anti-skating' stuff you mention...
But all I know is, in winter, you are better off taking public transportation.

Also, where are you located in Quebec?

an example of how bad our winters are would be...
When it snows. It snows. Within minutes snow could pile up to your ankles. Within hours it could reach up to your knees. Temperatures are capable of dropping to 40C below zero. That is also 40F below zero.
Last winter... it snowed so bad that there were practically no cars on the roads. The city became 'dead' during that time. It's so bad here that people begin making a 3 lane road into a 5 lane road due to weather conditions.

Actually this year in terms of snow fall we've had one of the worst winter season in years, Quebec city had accumulated 18 feet of snow for 07-08 (local all time record)

it doesn't get to -40 too often, most winters here in Montreal stick around 10F and -10F we've haven't had a really cold one for a quite a while, let's keep it that way.

As for winter tires, most insurance companies will penalize a person who's involved in an accident with 4seasons in winter, they may most likely require their customers to install the right tires to drive legally.

Don't feel too confident driving all winter with 4seasons tires, some cops will take care of that for sure.

You can run your winter tires on your stock rims without tpms... you will get a lil beep tone everytime you start the car, and you will also have a small yellow (!) near the mid... not that annoying really

Well, I've been in and out of Montreal a lot... and for some reason everytime I'm here to stay in the winter season.. it gets down to -30C and below. Scary. However... Montrea[and other regions] in general will practically always see a lot of snow.

It's not bad driving with 4 allseason tires, disco. I did it... I drove with 4 balding Toyo-Proxes4. I only started to lose control when going downhills... and say going 50km/h on slushy roads.

Hahah.. similar things happened here locally too. Not to often is that seen, though.
I used to own a Nokia 8800 several years back [had it before it was released in canada/states]. It was always in my pocket.. and since it was made out of metal... it always made my leg very cold at one spot. Felt like I was going to get frost bite from the phone. I could barely even hold it while talking to others... hahah.
