Anyone running 255/40/18's and lowered?

I should have my A-spec wheels/suspension by this time next week and want to get the tires ordered now as well. I'm torn between the 245/40/18's and 255/40/18's. I've seen some have run the 255, but after all of my searching the archives I have yet to fund someone lowered running this combo?

Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks,
Travis

To me it just seems like 255's is overkill considering the stock A-Spec 18's are 235. My guess is that with the 255's on the A-Spec wheels and suspension you won't have a rubbing problem but it is just a guess. Good luck.

I'm running the combo you're thinking about with no problems. Had 2 adults in back and no rub. Check Sig.

The TL race car was lowered and ran 255/45/17. 255 would be my pick

I really wish there was someone lowered, with 18" A-specs running the 255/40's and I'd be all over it....just don't want to take the chance since I'm ordering tires online, hrrmmmm

255/40/18's

I upgraded to the a-spec 18's (8.5" wide).

If you are getting the 8" new ones, 255's will work but for me would offer too much flex w/255's.

the 245/40/18's are perfect for the 18 8 1/2's. just right.

the 235/40's on the 8's will scar your rims just like the 17" stockers did with 235's.

If you are getting the 8 1/2's, the 255 will be fine, but I like the 245's..

Thanks for the reply. I too, am getting the '04 Gunmetal 18x8.5's, so that's why I was considering the 255's. However, I may be lowering as well, so at this point I'm probably not going to risk going 255's if no one can very it'll work without rubbing, so I'm likely going for 245/40/18's (thought I really would like to try the 255's.....however, being that I'm going to order the tires online for $ reasons, I don't have the option to 'test and fit').

Thanks,
Travis

255's

I lowered with the a-spec suspension and there is definitely no probs w/the 245's. I don't think you would even have a problem with 255's and a full load.

what struts do you plan to lower with?

Right, I know the 245/40/18's will work without issue, but didn't know about the 255's.

I will likely be lowering with Comptech's (because I really like how the drop looks, and everyone comments on the 'near stock' ride).

So, you think the 255's on either comptech or A-spec would clear (do you think you've got that much clearance inside and out)? (obviously it's a bit of a guesstimate)

Thanks again for your help,
Travis

I should clear that up, above I said I was putting on the A-spec I found (couldn't pass up the deal at $500), but unfortunately I found out it was for a auto tranny.

I installed the 255s on the 8.5" genmetal TL rims. No problems at all. But I did not install A-Spec springs that will lower the car 1/2". You are asking about the difference essentially between the 245 vs 255. The width difference between the two sizes is about 1/2". The overall diameter difference is 3/10". These are very small increases. Remember the A-Spec springs are stiffer than stock and the rebound rate won't be as much as stock. Not having heard if anyone has done what you are proposing I really don't think you will have any problems.

I'll agree with you that those are both small changes, but I'll use the example of trying to find wheels to fit over the Brembos on a 6MT, a VERY SMALL (just a few mm) and bam, it's all over.

I appreciate your input though, thanks for the post. Have you looked behind the wheel to see what kind of clearance you have for mechanicals/shocks/etc.? 1/2 - 1" is quite a bit to lower, this is my concern.

Thanks!
Travis

I think what you dealing with here is the offset of the wheel itself and not the tires. Since you said you bought A-Spec wheels then the clearance problem of the Brembos is a non issue since we all know it fits. As far as the mechanicals/shocks I do not have any problems with rubbing with the 255s. The only concern I see would possibly be rubbing the top of the wheel wells in extreme conditions. I know a couple from the forum who installed 20" rims and have no problems. You may want to research overall diameter of these rims and make a decision.

Anybody find a good all season tire in a 255/45/17? When I purchased my 245's last fall they were less than half the cost of most 255's

Actually, I placed an order for 245/40/18's as well, and that was one of the reasons. Even on Tirerack (or similar online placed), 255/40/18's are VERY limited (like 2 all season tire) and significant in additional expense.
