Nokian WR Tires

I just had these snow rated high performance tires installed on my car yesterday. I bought this brand because I had them on a previous front wheel drive car and they perfomed extraordinarially well.

With my AAA discount they cost $175/tire + mounting and NJ taxes ($25/tire) .

I'd be very curious to hear your comments on the WR in snow and dry pavement.

They're terrific on dry pavement. I'll comment here after we get some snow.

No snow yet, but they handle beautifully on turns and are very quiet on the highway.

We had our first snow fall in NJ- albeit only 2 inches. The tires performed quite well. The real test will be when we have a snow storm.

I assume you'll be running the WR year round, no?

I realize this is highly controversial, but I like the EL 42's in dry/wet conditions. I find them to handle great on turns and are very quiet. Flat-spotting a bit when very cold out. So to answer your question, I'll put them back on when the spring hits. I want to save the treads on my Nokians for the snow/ice.

If you're putting on different tires for the summer, why not put on a truly dedicated snow like the Nokian RSi?

Excellent question soljc. When the 42's run out of tread, I'll keep the Nokians on 12 months a year. My original set of 42's lasted 15K miles- I got them replaced gratis by my dealer because they had the PVC marking on them- these tires were recalled by Acura. I don't expect to have the new 42's for much longer, then I'll be able to use the Nokian WR's until my lease is up. Again, I'm waiting for a huge snow storm and we'll see how the WR's perform. They are terrific in light snow, dry and wet so far.

You had 15K on the PVC EL42's and the dealer still replaced them? No questions asked?

Don't believe there is an official recall on the PVC tires, although most dealers were replacing them.

Yes, my understanding is that there's no official recall on the tires. I've been very happy with my service manager; when I called about the excessive wear on my tires he asked me to bring the car in and he'd replace the tires for me. No questions asked. I don't think he used the term "recall" just that Acura was aware of problems with the tires.

Hopefully, that's good news for me. I first contacted my dealer about replacing the PVC EL-42's last Feb, but they wanted me to leave the car overnight so they could drive it first thing in the morning (after sitting all night) to verify the flat spotting. Well, I never found the time to leave it overnight. Now, a year later, with the cold weather the flat spotting is once again very noticeable in the morning. But I now have 16,600 on the tires and I had figured they'd laugh at me if I tried to get them replaced now. I'll give it a try. Thanks for the info!

We had our first snow fall in my area. In 3 inches of the white stuff the tires performed quite well. Cars in front of me were fishtailing and steering out of control and I was moving along nicely. With the Turanzas I would've been spinning a bit and my ABS light would have been blinking on and off.

The Nokians are indeed a great tire. I had them on my 2002 Jetta and was quite pleased with the performance. Highly recommended.
