Weak weak weak a/c fan!!!

Hey guys, I have an 06 TL that I've had for 6 months, love the car but the a/c fan is barely even adequate....it's not the air itself, it's freezing, but the fan speed, on high, is LITERALLY about half as "hard, or fast" as other cars. It's really, really low, and this can't be all that it has. It's black on black so this summer is going to be rough...and that's ridiculous in a car this nice and expensive. Anyone else have the same issue?

Mine seems fine, maybe your blower motor needs new brushes? Or I'm not sure but maybe a really dirty cabin filter could slow down the air coming out..

If your fan is going out, don't use your A/C (it won't activate if the fan doesn't work, anyway). The reason is if there is not proper air flow across the evaporator, you will get a coil freeze up. You will know this if you are running your A/C and is gradually fails to cool the car plus you start to smell and feel an increase in interior humidity.

Get this checked out.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

I really don't think there's anything wrong with the car, it's in really good shape and it only has 55k on it. Hopefully it's just that the filter is clogged. Will update!

I'll try and offer some advice to make up for the other thread lol.

It's 99% for sure the filter. In my area I replace mine every 15,000 or so. I let it go to 25,000 once and it made a noticable difference in airflow when I replaced it.

Also check out the options. There are some filters with the activated charcoal and baking soda to cut down on smells. The charcoal filter gives the interior a fresh smell.

Haha thanks. I'm thinking that may be it as well...I mean it's PITIFUL how low it is, and granted I get hot really easily and like it cooler than most, but I'm 99.99% sure that if the TL had a weak A/C fan, then surely others would know what I'm talking about. I'll have it looked at at my next oil change, which is soon. Yes, I go to the stealership.

Like I said, it has 55k on it, and I don't have any knowledge of it ever being changed before I got it.

DON'T GO TO THE STEALERSHIP!!!

Step One: Go to Walmart and pick up cabin air filter for $18. They have one with Baking Soda.
Step Two: Go online to you-tube or Acurazine to search for the Acura TL cabin filter video.
Step Three: Watch video a couple of times and perform the change yourself. All you need is a ratchet and 10 minutes.
Step Four: After completing task, call the dealership and get a quote to change the cabin filter.
Step Five: This one is important....Subtract the cost of the purchased filter from this price. PayPal me 50% of the difference in price.
Step Six: Be a hero and go buy a 12 pack of whatever you want and share.

You will still come out with more money in your pocket than having the Stealership perform the service.

hmm, my AC feels weak as well. I barely feel the air.

I'll check the Cabin Air Filter out. Then, I'll see if I need a new one.

Definitely check the cabin air filter. Hopefully you don't have a family of rodents living in your ducts like I did. Pulled 6 cups of cat food out that was resting on top of the cabin air filter....

That seriously happened? Damn, that's weird.

I pulled mine out today, took me about 10 minutes, $26 for the filter from Acura and this guide.

I was surprised how dirty it was, it was full of leaves, dirt and some bugs.

You left out the most important part:

Does your air still seem weak, or did it fix it?

I really need to get a handle on what the problem is here....I'd hate to get rid of this car, but I refuse to have paid that much for a car that I'm gonna burn the hell up in all summer long!

Just pull the filter out and look at it. It takes 3 minutes.

I can sort of feel it better through the vents but I don't know if it's all in my head lol.

If the car is on the line, spend the $20 on the filter and change it out.
I'm guessing it might be the blower motor though.

So I am having the same problem. I just replaced the air filter. It was slightly dirty, but not enough to impede the airflow to the center vents. I closed the rear vents, and that did not make a difference in air flow in the front center vents. That tells me that the airflow going to the rear vents come AFTER the front center vents. I'm not sure why the center vents have such a low cubic feet per minute (CFM) of airflow.

From what I have researched, either the blend actuator is not working, something is blocking it from working, something is impeding the airflow of the blower motor, or something else is off.

If the blower motor transistor is going, would that affect the fan speed? Is the transistor one of those electrical elements that either it works or it doesn't? In other words, is there a degradation or potential failure for the transistor that I need to be aware of?

When I checked the air filter and replaced it, I checked the free spinning of the blower motor and it seems to spin just fine, albeit not sure what speed it should be spinning at each of the 7 fan settings.

In my wife's 2015 Acura MDX, the fan setting of about 3 feels like the same air flow as my TL at the highest fan setting, which is 7.

I replaced the dash in October of 2019, so I'm not sure if something was misaligned, but I'm not even sure how I would check that? Maybe checking behind the radio?

Questions: What does the factory manual say that the front center vent CFM airflow should be and the tolerance?
What speed should the blower motor spin at at each of the seven fan settings?

I know for a fact the blend actuator from the MODE switch is working because when I had the glove compartment off, I could see it moving back and forth, directing air between the front windshield, the feet, and the dash. I tried to wiggle them, and they were solid.

The other thing I should mention is that sometimes when the air or heat is on that I will notice a very drastic drop in airflow from the vents, and it will do this on their own. Not sure why. I will not touch the fan setting, the temperature gauge, or anything. It just drops for no reason. Not sure if that's the fan motor, blend door actuator, or the motor resistor. It's annoying. It's approximately a 30-50% drop in airflow from the front vents.

In my fights with the blend doors on mine over the years, here were my notes:
- "something" continued to cause the driver's side to be warmer than the passenger side even though everything always seemed to be fine
- I am pretty sure the foam around the center vent ducting had starting failing causing poor airflow out the center dash vents
- I gave up and just used floor and defrost modes mostly unless my kids were in the car, they still needed airflow via the center console vents
- If the rear vents are closed and the side vents are nice and strong, it isn't the blower...it is a ducting issue either a mixing/blend door or the failing foam

I ended up selling mine so I never got around to taking the dash apart to investigate the failed foam.

Dude, you're awesome! Thanks for the quick reply!
Today, I'm going to take out the radio and feel around the center stack behind the radio to see/feel if everything sealed up right when I replaced the dash. Hopefully it did, because the thought of taking out dozens of screws and connectors to reseat the dash vents is not appetizing to me from when I replaced the dash last October 2019.

GPS also impacts A/C with sun direction that causes changes in speed randomly. Check your A/C pressures make sure they are all in line and correct.

My 08 is doing this. My airflow is consistent from the outer vents, but my two center stack vents will drop in fanspeed randomly. I don't have it set to auto, so it's not a gps linked situation. My temperatures are fine, even in dual mode. My mode selector works fine. This has been going on for about 6 months. Very curious to know why the center vents are having random decreases in blowing power.
