Transmission is done?
I have an 04 TL auto. Today on highway my vehicles engine just shut off by itself. The rpm was still at 2k while driving at 110kph, the speedometer was at 0. VSA, check engine lights came on and the "D" shift light started blinking. The engine started smoking from the driver side. I recently changed my tranny oil and a lot of metal came out too... Am I doomed?

An engine is a rather mechanical device and has more than two discrete states.
When you say 'shut off', what do you mean? Was there any sounds, smells or vibrations associated with this? Engines 'shutting off' should indicate some electrical problem, but that shouldn't be associated with smoke. It sounds more like the vehicle stopped moving itself and you think the engine died, when it did not.
If you changed the trans fluid and 'a lot' of metal came out, you should have called a tow truck then. That kind of thing is an exceptional indicator of imminent failure. You probably need a new transmission. Quite common on your model. And transmissions only last so long anyways. How many miles are on the car?

The engine did not stopped moving, it was still revolving around 2k rpm, all electronic components were still working completely fine though. However the speedometer went to 0 even though the car is still travelling at high speeds and all the symptoms as I described appeared. The car wouldn't speed up, only slow down until it came to a halt. I'm guessing the transmission disengaged.
I have just 200k km on the car.
BTW I'm not doing too well financially, it may be wiser to get another reliable used car temporarily for the next few years.

You need a transmission rebuild or replacement.
Prices vary wildly, from several hundred to several thousand. Reliability on rebuilt transmissions is hit and miss, depending on who rebuilds it. It's almost certainly going to be >$1000, and you can probably get another car for $1000 thats reliable enough, or at least cheap and easy to fix. Or try and find a cheap used junkyard transmission and a place to put it in for you. That method of course has no guarantees, however.
200,000 km is actually roughly average for those transmissions. They are not great.

Try this first.

"Symptoms (as experienced by me)
While driving, the D light would turn off and the transmission would subsequently downshift.
While driving, the D light would periodically blink.
While driving, and in tiptronic mode, the gear number would begin to flash.
Putting the transmission into neutral and back into gear would fix any of the above symptoms."
