Don't do the 3x3 all at once! DO ONE drain and refill and see how the car responds. If well, think about doing a second and wait and see the results.

sorry, i actually agree with csmeance, i skimmed your post and didn't consider the higher mileage you have.

like he said, introduce the fluid slowly. 1x3 at first.

im hitting 40k miles soon, and my buddy is just about to hit 90k.
we're both about to do the 3x3 and now your post intrigues me.
any hints/tricks we should know?
why do you say to introduce the fluid like that?
thanks!
i'm glad this is happening before we do our flush

vinceey, i did my 3x3 at 40k and it did nothing but improve shift quality. so you're fine there.

for your friend, at 90k, it's a good idea to introuduce the fluid at a slower rate so that you don't shock your system with this brand new fluid. do a 1x3, and then give it a while (500miles or so, whatever you're comfortable with) and see how the car feels, then go back and do another 1x3, and so on n so on.

I did 3x3 at higher mileage with only a few miles in between (70K and 90k ish). It was fine. The worst thing that could happen is that some buildup is released by the new fluid and the clutches are sluggish - this will likely happen with just a 1x3 too.

I doubt that the fluid is original. The Honda ATF is not much good past 15K, let alone 100K.

at 40K your fine, but at 90k I'd do it slowly. The reason for this is the way the clutches and other components wear down. Basically with fluid that can't lubricate properly anymore, metal particles and clutch particles start floating in the fluid and actually help establish an engagement. Removing too much of these particles by draining and adding new fluid can cause the transmission to start slipping which is even worse than having old fluid!

thanks for the response csmeanace
but question to followup with that.
doesn't that mean if it is true that the particles are helping, that even if we introduce slowly, we can introduce too much?
for example, if we do the whole 3x3, it'll have little to no particles left, thus leading to slippage
but if we do like 2x3 and its already too thin, it's too late anyways? causing slippage and even more transmission damage? wouldnt that mean not to change the fluid at all?

If the clutches need the metal shavings to grip, rather than the grip of the new fluid, then save your money for a rebuild... it is coming quick. In normal cases, most of the shavings wind up on the magnetic plug.

In a good (or even decent) condition trans axle, the grab provided by the new fluid is enough.

Do your 3x3 with a high quality fluid (not honda fluid) in whatever interval you are comfortable with. I have had very good success with the Redline Racing as well as the Mobil 1 Synthetic. I would drive the car for enough time to heat up and thoroughly mix the new and old fluid (5 miles or so), but doing it over several weeks is just fine too.

If I do a 1x3 is it ok to mix up redline racing fluid with whatever is in there because I don't know what the two previous owners did to it

Yes. This is what everybody does since no Acuras shipped with Redline Racing from the factory.
