the D light blinking means there is a transmission error detected. You will have to take the car to acura. Also how long ago did you get the car, is it certified pre owned? Also take a look at the tranismission fluid, it should be redish pink. If it is brown the issue is that the fluid was never changed and the transmission tore itself to shreds or got clogged.
agree- the good part about cpo cars is their warranty- a replacement warranty transmission is in your future
If you think such low mileage failure is bad- read gen2 thread on Tranny failure
We have the original problem- and a court case extending warranty to 7 years 109k miles!
you got the continuation of the problem with the trans-

not really that odd to go at 61-
the gen2 trans prob- where failure anywhere after 50k miles was considered by the techs to be ~ right on schedule~
and the 04 05 cars had the exact same trans..............
add to that -
acura made changes to the oil channel passages and improved the operation and lifespan of the trans, approx 2/05, for the replacement units-
and my personal guess- that those are testbeds for production line changes to the overall trans case
so maybe in 06 all the latest improvements made their way to the manufacturing plant for the new car units
Did they give you full `Goodwill warranty coverage`= free trans and a loaner car?

Wow, I have the same problem with my 05 Tl with 103k Mile. The same shit happens, I feel like I running the center divier when re-gas, everything goes back to normal. I am shit out of luck because I dont have warranty.
Take it to the dealer and have them diagnose the problem. They should cover most of the repair. There was one member on here who had an '04. His transmission died at just over 100k, and his out-of-pocket contribution to the repair was only $150 if I remember right.

I guess I misread his post, but 01tl4tl did say "04 05 cars had the exact same trans.............." thanks for the clarification.
ok - there may be minor differances between them- but-- by and large- its the same design, and the same case, and the same parts with not enough room for a few more parts that would really make it good~.... and the same end result-
I admit there are likely a few differances as they learned things in gen2 and made upgrades internally- figure the production lead time for casting metal parts and assembling trans units
in 2000-2003 they were having lots of trans failures at 35-50,000 or less, that led to the lawsuit and extended warranty
In 2004 a recall to install an external mounted sprayer to get more oil to 2nd gear parts via the trans oil fill hole was done
By that time they were already SELLING gen3s....
These cars use the same or very similar brake parts for many years/decades! and across several models--why would the trans be any different??
but safe to say it is a TipTronic trans- of which all models are a very similar design-
be it installed in a vw or an acura
soda- do you have factual proof they are vastly different?
then why are they starting to drop with increasing frequency over the last year, as seen on azine threads!

1st. Honda/Acura automatic transmissions are unlike that of almost every other mainstream automaker. They are essentially electronically controlled manual transmissions in the way that they are designed. So they would not be just like the ones in a VW, or any other car. It's shiftronic, not tiptronic.
1999-2000 models had a 4 speed unit, and 2000-2003 models had a 5 speed unit. The transmission in the 2004 TL is not the same, it is similar, but it is not the same. If it were the same, it would have the same part number.
2004's have way more problems than 05's. The 04's share the problem that the 2003-04 Accord had in V6 form. It was a lack of lubrication, so dealers installed an "oil jet kit". Most 05's should be ok, however early 05's will likely have issues. I have an 04 produced 05, and it is ok, so far, at 50+k miles.
Regardless, Acura acknowledges the problems, and is actively helping those affected by their mistakes. Anyone who experiences transmission troubles should certainly take their car to a dealership for a professional diagnosis, and go from there if they are out of warranty. Call Acura if the dealer is not already prepared to seek goodwill repair for you.
It happened to me last night....
Hey guys...I've been lurking on this forum for 4 years now and have learned a lot about my 05 TL. Currently I have 86,000 miles with a sick transmision and no extended warranty.
Unfortunately for me, I was on my way back to Chicago last night and went through this same experience with the trans. I was able to get it into the dealer today for diagnosis and of course, it needs a new one. When the service advisor called to tell me it needed a new trans, he mentioned right off the bat that they worked out a deal with the local Acura rep to split the cost of the new one and it'll "only" be $1,600. I've read some of the posts that few of you only paid $150-$300 and was wondering if you have any advice to get this number down.
Supposedly, the regional acura rep will be at the dealer tomorrow and will "try" to see if he can do anything else for me.
The real killer is that I have 3 months left on my lease and had full intentions of leasing a new sh-awd TL in the next month or two. Great timing....huh.
Thank you in advance for your help....

I would call Acura corporate and explain the situation: car is at the dealer, dealership is offering to split the cost, etc.
Tell them that you are disappointed with the dealer's offer and that you are expecting greater assistance considering the situation. Explain that problems with these are not uncommon and that you are not alone. Emphasize loyalty to the brand....see if this works.

So...the dealer called back today and said there's nothing they can do off the $1600 for the trans. They offered to give me a full credit or pay for it now if I buy a new car from them. How nice.
I'm waiting for the Case manager to call me back from Acura Corporate.....

I am still laughing at the belief system that different part numbers mean its actually a different part
You would be amazed how many parts cross referance and transfer to newer version numbers, and are all the same--between car makes/models/years
Gfaze can confirm that~
and I believe in my TL owner book is where it calls it `TipTronic` transmision

From the manual...
In Sequential SportShift mode, each
time you push forward on the shift
lever, the transmission shifts to a
higher gear. Pull back on the lever to
downshift. The number of the gear
selected is displayed on the
instrument panel.
To enter the Sequential SportShift
mode, move the shift lever further to
the driver’s side. To return to ‘‘D,’’
move the shift lever to the
passenger’s side.
When you move the shift lever from
‘‘D’’ to the Sequential SportShift
mode, the display shows the selected
gear.

I did a 48 month, 100K mile lease through Honda finance, so I'll probably be slightly under in miles. I was planning on turning it in early for an sh-awd TL or b8 A4, but with this expense, it looks like I'm hanging on to it for a couple more months.
I finally talked to the case manager at Acura corporate today, who will give me the final offer tomorrow. It'll be interesting to see what happens....
