Transmission problem (2005 TL with 102k miles)

All,

Whenever I drive between 45 to 50 MPH, I feel like I am running my center dividers of the freeway. When I let go of the gas and re-gas, the cars goes back to normal.

I used to have a 2000 TL and knew there many problems with the tranny. Are there any tranny problems with 2005? If so, are they being recall? I try to search, but I could find anything on 3rd gen.

Thank You

dude - i would say its the tranny...i just got mine replaced for the same thing...though mine was between 30-40mph...sounds like the tranny is slipping between gears...mine was covered under warranty (i have the 100k) though i think the dealer would at least work with you on it, seeing how this is such a common problem...and yes even with the 3rd Gen's....mine is an 04 and only had 45k when it first showed up...got the new tranny @ 52k

I was driving it today and when I was between 30-40MPH, I felt it again that the car was running the center divider of freeway....it was making a gerrr gerrr gerrr.

What are the symptoms of gear slippage?

Here's a simple test you can do.

Cruise at 30mph in Auto (Not SS).

Punch the gas and your car will down shift without ANY hesitation.

If the revs keep climbing and catch late .. that means there's slippage.

I hope I won't be running into these problems .. 82,000 miles on the clock now and dang I'm nervous.

Hearing nothing but horrible transmission issues has moved me more and more away from purchasing a TL. Such a shame.

You'll never know what you're missing then...

Wouldn't you still bag the hottest chick in the office even if she had bad breath or a wonky eye? I WOULD!!!

What do you mean by "running on the dividers?" A shudder? Torque converter problems aren't uncommon on the 5-speed autos, even the 04-up.

2005 acura tl auto 40k

I dont have that kind of a problem with me auto, but I can certanly feel "really feel" when my tranny shifts... I dont know if it suppose to be so obvious and noticble but trust me when it shifts from 1 - 2 - 3 gears I can feel. Its like a kick or hard pull when shift occurs... Any suggestions, help?

Honda autos don't shift that nicely IMO. Have you driven a similar vehicle to compare the shifts?

Not only do I get the "gerr gerr gerr" noise when I drive between 30-40mph, but also, the tranny fluid smiles very strong and is pich dark. I think I screwed with this tranny? How can I convience Acura to pay for this thing? I have own 5 TL/CL in my life, this is my 6th one.

If Acura does a goodwell, how much do they pay for the repairs? Does anyone know?

Is the fluid dark brown? That's normal. The "gerr" noise doesn't sound normal, though if it's just a whine, they're not going to do anything about it. Acura published a service bulletin last year that said whines are normal.

You have to get the vehicle diagnosed by the dealer first. They have to write-up an estimate saying that the unit needs to be replaced before anything can be done.

Usually your dealer will go to the bat for you. If you're dissatisfied with the outcome, then you can talk to the service manager and/or open up a case with corporate. As far as how much they'll pay, a decision is made on a case-by-case basis. I would hope for no more than labor only.

How often did you change the transmission fluid?

Currently, Honda is recommending 30k mile change intervals.

I would get the fluid changed with new Honda ATF before asking for goodwill consideration, so it looks like you've been doing your part to keep things maintained... others might disagree though?

That isn't true.

Honda dealerships recommend every 30,000 miles, but not the factory.

The service manual states to follow the Maintenance Minder system for fluid service intervals. The 3 code usually appears between 60-90k for most drivers. It does say, however, that if you drive under very severe conditions, the service interval is 60,000 miles (and 30,000 miles thereafter IIRC).

I said currently. Open a 2009 owners manual. Says it right there, on both our Accord and Fit. Usually this is pretty much standard for all models of that year (cars).

Anyone who doesn't change the tranny fluid every 30k is stupid IMO. It is such cheap insurance. The fluid should be red or pink, and clear. Not brown.

I just pulled this off owner's link for a 2009 FIT:

Maintenance Minder 3 Scheduled Maintenance
Recommended service for your 2009 Honda Fit:

Replace transmission fluid
Driving in mountainous areas at very low vehicle speeds results in higher transmission temperatures. This requires transmission fluid changes more frequently than recommended by the maintenance minder. If you regularly drive your vehicle under these conditions, have the transmission fluid changed at 60,000 miles (100,000 km), then every 30,000 miles (48,000 km). (For A/T only)
If you tow a FIT behind a motorhome, the transmission fluid must be changed every 2 years or 30,000 miles (48,000 km), whichever comes first. (For A/T only)

Independent of maintenance message in the information display, replace the brake fluid every 3 years.

Inspect idle speed every 160,000 miles (256,000 km).

Adjust the valves during services A, B, 1, 2, or 3 only if they are noisy.
Transmission fluid will turn dark brown. This is normal as the fluid is suspending contaminants. Many transmissions use a carbon fiber based friction material that will darken the fluid very quickly. Dark fluid does not mean the fluid and/or the transmission has failed.

Sounds just like my my 04 A/T TL tranny. Better get it into Acura for a warranty replacement before it costs you a bundle, I just had my tranny replaced under warranty, I had two months left on it.

I don't know what it is, but I am so anal when it comes to tranny. I change my fluid every 9k miles , sometimes 10k at most. and I NEVER had any problem with my TL. And for a good a year in 2005 I drove that thing HARD, by hard I mean literally hard. But it was strong when I sold it.

I miss the TL but it was time to move on. It was definitely the best car I have ever owned.

Around 30-40 mph (55-60km/h) in 4th gear under 1500 rpm (slow cruise) on a flat road, a "droning" or a sound like you are running over the lane markers on the freeway happens.

Also, my tranny would shake when changing from 3rd to 4th gear when going up a hill or slight incline.

It you are experiencing this get it fixed under warranty.
