Random Misfire on 6MT

Hello all, I drive a ‘05 TL 6MT with approximately 185k miles. Approx. a week ago, the car started to give a random misfire code. I’ve read through a number of threads with owners having a similar problem and it appears the culprit could widely vary.

My car isn’t driven hard. I typically drive twice a week, all highways miles and only use Shell premium and Mobil 1 synthetic oil. Needless to say the car has been babied over the years. Appt with my local dealership is setup for tomorrow. I thought about troubleshooting myself as I do my own maintenance but just don’t have the time this time around. Will keep all updated on the outcome.

Not in my Acura but usually when that happened in my other cars the spark plugs needed to be replaced. Sometimes it will show a number of which cylinder is the main culprit. My advice is to not let the dealership talking you into changing all the coils because they do not go bad as often as people think they do. Good luck

check your ignition coil as well, if one goes bad it will throw off entire thing.

Hope just plugs--dealers charge big for them, tho'...Keep us appraised, and good luck!

Guys thanks for the input. Still waiting to hear back from the dealership. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get an update. Fingers-crossed it's just a bad coil or possibly a bad plug and nothing more. I changed the plugs in March 2014 with NGK iridium plugs so plugs have less that 60k on them. It's possible one went bad.

If it's one plug, it's probably the coil, in my experience. Hoping for the best!

Update #1

Got the call from the dealership. The good news is the coils are all good. The bad news is my car needs a valve adjustment and a new set of spark plugs.

The valves are too tight, which at a 185k miles, I’m definitely due for one. They quoted $550 for the valve adjustment.

On the spark plugs, they took one plug out and it was in rough shape. I changed my plugs 4 years ago, with approx 50-60k miles on them. I’m a bit surprised it would be so worn already. Parts & labor worked out to be $200.

At some point I’ll need to rebuild my power steering pump as they noted it leaking and replace my driver side compliance bushing.

Gave them the go ahead to do valve adjustment & plugs. Hopefully this may help anyone else that gets a random misfire on their 3G.

You’re absolutely right!! The car has been very reliable over the years. To have general maintenance fix the CEL, I couldn’t have asked for a better outcome.

Pretty normal for 185K miles, Flyer, including the PS seepage. The $550 price is right in line with the dealership here (but I always cringe at their $200 spark plug price.)
Anyway, a little maintenance and back on the road for many miles=YAY!

I would say the price is very reasonable for dealer service, about the spark plugs 6 of them from Honda already cost you $110-$150 depend on where you bought it. that leave the dealer roughly $100 labor so not bad at all.

OP FYI there are counterfeit plugs floating around the market since 2012, this is why I changed my plugs again except this time I purchase from Rockauto.

I wasn't aware of the counterfeit plugs. I purchased mine from Advance Auto. Is it possible those could've been affected?

I wouldn't worry if you bought from Advance auto or any major auto parts retail store, however what brand did you go with? as modern car now these day like to use the same plug manufacture as OEM one.

Toyota use Denso meanwhile Honda use NGK, German car tend to favorite Bosch.

Another thing to notes since your car has close to 200k miles, the ignition coil is nearing the end of their useful life. Not all misfiring will trigger CEL.
