Heatsoak problem? or tranny?

Hi guys!

Ok I have an 05 TL auto 68K on it. thats out the way. Ok so I push the gas the rev is normal, acceleration is not. I thought it might have been ATF fluid being low. I never owned an automatic so to me I can only describe it as a clutch slipping you know lots of rev and no go or little go. Feels sluggish like it doesnt wanna go at WOT. then I started thinking you know its 98 degrees out w/ 65% humidity here in NC. But even in the morning it does it. I also thought it may be the APP but everyone I talk to says engine light and stuff would go crazy. Im at a loss I just changed my plugs which may be fouling or something not sure. Thought maybe someone could help. Thanks in advance

A few questions:
1. Does the car move?
2. Does it shift gears?
3. If you rev the car in park or neutral, does it seem normal?
4. Do you have any CEL's?

i just glimpsed over your post; if you're describing it as being "heat soaked" that's unfortunately normal. however, you mentioned that it's like the given even in the mornings. in response to your "clutch slipping" comment, it's possible that your transmission's going. you said it revs freely? have you tried wot? does it slip then? it's hard to miss if it's slipping...

keep us posted. if worst comes to worst, try doing a full, complete flush (3x3 with machine @ dealer).

yes car moves, shifts gears fine, in netural its fine and no CELS. Man if this is heatsoak this is the worst case cuz its really sluggish. Its not exactly like a slip its more like the engine is working but the power/torque is not hitting the road. Like a mash the pedal and it accelerates like im only pressing it in a little bit.

yeah. that's the heat soaking issue. do a search, and you'll see LOTS of information on it. it's really bad, isn't it? lots of cooling mods available. popping the hood really really works great; heat soak still persists, but it's a lot better. not sure if this is valid, but high end engine oils seemed to have promoted less heat soak on mine when I had it. that and the intake manifold spacer did wonders.

Apparently SOME TLs exhibit this behavior. Hit or miss I assume as my car doesn't have too noticeable of a performance deficiency in hot weather. 90 or so today in the south bay and the car ran fine.

Check the APP (Accelerator pedal position) sensor?

See https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-problems-fixes-114/acceleration-failure-while-driving-726039/.

when yo drain that atf, run it through those paper strainers available at any parts stores. also note the fluid color. if you see lots of material on the strainer, take the evidence to your dealer and proceed from there.

Sounds like a classic case of TL heatsoak. Mine does it so bad I have to give it over half throttle just to keep up with normal traffic from a light. It runs perfectly normal in the winter. I've tried many solutions. The latest is going to be replacing the thermostat. Mine has run 30 degrees hotter than the thermostat rating since new, winter or summer. With the cool air of the winter it does ok even at the high coolant temp but the summer is terrible.

It's sad when you think the turbo cars are as bad as it gets from cold to hot power loss but the TL tops them.

The APP sensor is a VERY common problem in this model TL. Though "heat soak" may occur, we tend to see a good amount of APP sensors go through our shop. Just something else to consider.

Part number for the APP sensor (accelerator pedal sensor) is 37971-RBB-003.

DUVALACURA..... Hi... I saw a couple of your posts and would REALLY appreciate some advice, seeing as you're a tech. I'm INCREDIBLY frustrated right now. I have on 05 TL 6sp... for the last 25k miles I've had AWFUL low-end acceleration issues. The car was ONLY serviced at an Acura dealership... I even bought tires there! lol The most frustrating this is that 20 percent of the time, my car is an absolute beast. It performs great sometimes but most of the time I'm getting a total lack of low end power. Once the valves open up around 3500-4000rpm, the car gets up and goes but it can be really bad getting there. I know heatsoak can be an issue but I live in Rhode Island and it was doing this in 30 degree weather. I had a friend (mechanic) hook my car up to his Snap-On computer and he found that all 6 cylinders are misfiring randomly. He thinks that's where I'm getting robbed of my power. I went to him 3 times and all 3 times we found misfires. The 3 times I took my car to Acura (2 diff. dealerships) they said they found no misfires. BTW... the car has never given me any check engine lights or codes. I just replaced the knock sensor as a guess and that didn't help at all. The timing is spot on, I had the timing belt and water pump done recently and that didn't solve anything either. I'm very frustrated and can't get any answers or even suggestions from the techs. I can feel the car misfiring when I drive. It feels very uneven when I accelerate. One time I went for a ride with a tech and he said... "yea there's definitely something going on".... and then after their 135.00 diagnosis, they said the car was performing as it should and so there's nothing wrong with it. I'd prefer to take it to Acura because I know you guys know way more than a regular mechanic. So my question is.... A.) Do you have any idea what my problem could be? B.) Is this a design flaw somewhere in the computer system?
There are a LOT of people on here with the same issues and nobody can seem to figure it out. I love what my car could be but as of right now I feel like I have a lemon. I'd GREATLY appreciate any advice! Hell, if you give me info and it works, I'll write you a damn check! I'm at the point where I'm thinking about trading it in for something different (maybe my first NON-Honda). Thanks again!!
