front rotors are gone....?

Hi All,

I have 39,000 miles on my car. I took my car to the dealer to change the oil and tranny fluid. I asked them to check the brakes asking whether it is needed to be changed ( I did not mentioned me feeling little shake on the brake paddle when breaking).

Dealer called me and said breaks are half gone and no need to be replaced and I am fine. Then if so please check and mentioned If feel what I mentioned before. Then they call and says my front rotors are gone and need to be replaced. ($450 charge). Mentioned I would get the life time warranty on the rotors if I maintained them with them (like cleaning the breaks every spring).

My question is whether the front rotor thing is true. Why did not they catch it first if it is needed to be replaced when checking the brakes? Should they not notice is it while checking the brakes? He said rotors can't be resurfaced? I mean I got there for every service and they never mentioned rotors and now
all of sudden the rotors are at stage need to be replaced not resurfaced?

Pls give me some hints and comments.

If they didn't drive the car and did just a visual, they would not have known the rotors were out of tolerance. Once again it's a good idea to tell the mechanics the problem in advance.
Depending on how much needs to be removed is the determining factor on rotor replacement. There is not much "meat" that can be removed before it will be under the factory minimum, but most don't worry about the minimum thickness and just cut it anyway, but that is not the best solution. At times, especially if you can do the job yourself, you're better off just replacing the rotors and pads and be done with it.

Auto or manual?

It's always better to replace the rotors rather than cutting them.

I would look at the aftermarket if you have an auto. Much better rotors out there for the same price.

I got a quote for OEM rotors from Advanced Auto Parts. They quoted me $110. I started shopping around and found some nice drilled and slotted rotors (if you dont want them for the appearance, know that they keep your rotors much cooler. This will GREATLY decrease the chance of warping them in the future, and needing to once again have them replaced). I bought those for $105 shipped. Look around, you'll find good deals. I looked for a few hours to find these.

If you're buying drilled rotors, hope that they were designed drilled (or to be drilled) and not run-of-the-mill blanks that are drilled without consideration for structural integrity.

IOW - cheap drilled rotors can crack at the drill holes.
