My new TL-S has the whining issue when its cold out also.

My Feeder hose was replaced by the previous owner under the recall in September, but I still have the noise now on cold mornings.

Anyone have any ideas? Is it possible they didn't replace the o-ring during the feeder hose replacement?

Thanks!

Yep, totally possible. It's happened to a surprising number of Azine members. You can check yourself. If the inlet O-ring is black, they didn't replace it... If it's orange, they did and it may just need a new one...

Still can't find the bolt. I had another bolt that fit perfectly and everything seems fine. Hopefully that bolt doesn't end up anywhere bad

Awesome.

So I went to speak with the service rep at the dealership that's done basically all of the maintenance on my TL (Rosenthal Acura in MD). The previous owner went to the dealer for everything.

I first asked for any service records they might have in the computer and he provided me with all of them. The power steering hose recall had been done in September.

I mentioned the whining issue and asked if it was possible that they hadnt replaced the o-ring at the time. Rep assured me that they knew about the o-ring issue for years now and they always replace it. Recommended I leave the car overnight so they could check it out in the AM and see what was up. Politely declined and left. I went to the parts counter and bought the o-ring.

Came home, found this. Needless to say ill be leaving appropriate reviews on yelp and may even call Acura client care. Pretty uncool of them to be honest.

Yup, just as I expected, they didn't replace the O-ring. Pretty pathetic since it's included in the kit. Just plain laziness.....

I'd email the SM with a link to your above post

The lowest guy on the totem pole usually does recall work / lube jobs / etc.. So it's not surprising he skipped the replacement. Service writer's are all about the sell.. they'll say anything to assure you it was done right or if you don't do a certain service, you'll be driving a death trap. I say save your energy and pat yourself on the back for saving some money.

Wow, awesome...
and guess what would have happened if you HAD left the car overnight for them to "check"?!

They would have swapped it out this morning to the orange one, then told you that they just tightened up the bolt and didn't hear any noises. But let them know if you hear it again.

I hate liars...but, other than the lube guy, none of the other guys would really KNOW that it wasn't done so they're not really lying.

Well the noise went away for the most part. I think I still have a little noise because I am at the low line for my power steering fluid. Will be going to the honda dealer at lunch. May also need to torque the bolt down a little more. Thanks for the help guys and to Majofo & nfnsquared for all their quick responses.

it's a plastic piece though, so don't torque down too much.

man thats messed up !!!

hate it when shit like this happens....If dealerships were honest about their business, I bet they would get more business....

but i dont blame them as much coz I started dating my girl (now my wife) coz of stealerships....she owns a 2003 Lexus ES 300 and the dealership wanted $4300 for brakes and switching out 2 tires coz of a "leak"....

she and I worked together and one day when we were going for lunch I insisted that I take my car....she sat in my car and asked me if the dealership was quoting her correct and I was like, i can do all that for less than 300 bucks....the rest is history

Be careful with that bolt. Torque spec is only 8.1 ft-lbs.

It may take a few days to work all the air out of the system. I'd fill it back to the recommended line and then be patient for a day or two.

According to the video, working the steering stop to stop a few times will help.

Yeah thats what Im thinking. And I just remembered I did not put any steering fluid on the new rubber gasket when I installed it. However, it was 47 degrees this morning and there wasnt any noise. But i heard a tad bit when I parked after driving 3 miles.

This thread is awesome

I'm trying to figure out if the dealer replaced the o-ring but cannot get the 10mm bolt off,i feel like its massively over torqued. I've tried some pb blaster, and even bought a new longer wrench with an angled head but still cant get it to budge... any ideas? What would I have to remove to get better access?

thanks

I did the o ring replacement 2 years ago and all was good. Now the noise is back, so I bought another orange o-ring and flushed the fluid but no go. Noise is still there. I believe I need a new PS pump? Perhaps a used one.

That's a great price, but an overhaul is usually overkill. The two o-rings that usually cause the issue are are 0.51 and 0.58 at acuraoemparts. I recommend replacing these two first before doing a full overhaul.

A little late, but did you contact one of the Azine parts dealer vendors for a quote?

yeh i know its an overkill but by looking at my power steering it seems like it is leaking some fluid somewhere out of the back of pump, so without having to do search and fix on every seal im just gonna do it all at once and might as well flush out the system and be done with it..

I just got an overhaul on my PS Pump.

Although it was cost me roughly $27 in parts for just 3 bottles of PS fluid and all internal PS O-rings and 2 seals. It was worth it as I too had a leak in the back of it. When the service tech showed me them upon my request I felt they were very stiff, and flat.

I bought the parts and took it to get installed so I know the differences between the new ones and old ones. My steering pump no longer leaks and no more bubbles in my reservoir.

I am a happy TL driver, and not sure if its mind tricks but my steering feels much more precise and not loose like it did before. Very minor feel in steering response, no more whine either.

Power Steering noise (O-ring)

Hello,

I recently started hearing a noise coming from my power steering pump of my 2004 TL. I went into the the ACURAZine site and found the solution. I replaced the Power Steering O-ring and the noise stopped. A couple of weeks later, at -26 degrees Celsius, the noise started again. Does anyone know if this is a recurring problem? Do I have to replace the O-ring again? I heard that there was a recall for the power steering hose. Does this have anything to do with it?

Thanks.

1. Was the replacement O-ring orange?
2. Did you verify the PS fluid level was good?
3. Are there bubbles in PS fluid in the reservoir?

It's been awhile since I logged on, but this is why I love this site. I had this problem since last year, but it's worst this year. I finally searched here, and found the problem and solution.

I checked on acura owner page, and my vin shows that the recall repair was done already. I don't even remember having the recall repair done. Is it possible that the status shows repaired when it wasn't? Should I bring it to the dealer, or try the repair myself? I have a feeling I'm going to see a black o ring...

It's easy. I'd just do it myself and take pics. Then if you feel like it, you can take the pics into the dealer and bitch at them if they didn't replace the O-ring.

My 05 started doing the same thing in this <20 degree cold weather. Based on this forum, I went into Rallye Acura and the service guy says there's no o-ring in the power steering pump. I pulled out the parts number and he does not find it listed for my car! Anyway, I bought two and will be installing it when the weather gets better. Just to show it's always better to do your own research.

I had the same issue with a 05 TL...recall has been completed by Acura and guess what, black o-ring still installed. Anyway, bought the orange o-ring on Saturday at the Honda dealer for .98. The install took the entire ten minutes and that included cleanup. You guys rock, thanks for the thread and all the posts. Majofo, thanks for the thread starter.
