That's awesome Red! Hopefully you don't need a new pump.

RS forgot / neglected to make sure his res was properly secured after removing it from the post. His serp belt cut a nasty gash into it.

Learn from his mistakes kiddos..

i need help also...I have an acura tl 05 made loud noise at the ps pump so i decided to change it. It worked fine until winter hit. when I start the car in the morning it would make a loud whining noise for like 5 seconds. I've been reading alot and I've also been getting alot of answers. Any advice would help. Thanks alot.

1. O ring which I changed it twice.
2. pump out fluid might had air pockets
3. tension pulley and idler pulley
4 crankshaft pulley

I have a video which I can post. But it clearly 90% it sounds like its coming from the ps pump.
This is the video link:

Update, MDX has been fine since o-ring and fluid flush. Got 3 more bottles fluid since driven few thousand miles fluid looks black again.

Also did fluid flush on my 08 TL. Was like driveway sealer at 88,000 miles. May trade in for f150 today so may not follow up TL maintenance.

I just did this last weekend on my 04 auto with 96k. Fluid was black but o-ring wasn't completely brittle. Replaced o-ring and flushed PS fluid and no more whine at start-up on colder days. Might flush the ps fluid again as it still doesn't look great, but definite improvement. I only cleaned out my reservoir, didn't replace it. Thanks for the write-up!

I flush and filled my wife's mdx 3 times now at 88k miles and it's finally starting to resemble clean fluid. The first time I took the reservoir out and flushed it out with brake clean as well. All the mdx cold weather ps noise has been cured.

Thanks a lot for this thread. I had the whine appear this week, -2 degrees F, go figure. The part was 97 cents, it took me less than 10 minutes start to finish. Next up will be a fluid purge/replace.

Acurazine to the rescue again

Had this happen on my 06 TL during a cold snap right after Christmas. Found this thread and for $0.82 and ten minutes time replaced the black O-ring with the orange one. Just need to top off the fluid and wait for it to get cold again.

(2005 TL) I don have the noise yet, but I suspect that the PS hose or pump are leaking. I just changed the oild yesterday and noticed the front side of the engine is a little wet with oil as well as the bottom and front of the oil pan and bottom of the compressor. The fluid was not dark like the used oil but rather yellowishish like PS fluid. I'm a little puzzled as to how this oil, if it's PS fluid, made to to this area of the engine. The area under the PS pump is a little damp but i can't see an obvious source of the leak. The PS fluid was topped off a few months ago and was below the min line yesterday. Any opinions are welcome.

I had the whining and froth in the reservoir. I had friend replace the o ring but the whine remains.

I did not notice him lube the new ring when he put it on. Could that be the problem?

Also, a teaspoon or so of psf got on my the belt which he quickly whiped off cause for concern? Thanks.

No concern there, and I don't think the lubing is to blame. That said, it's a 5 minutes job so it might be worth redoing.

You don't need to lube the o-ring. In fact, it could interfere if too much was used or it can deteriorate the o-ring if an improper lubricant was applied.

Thanks.
2 follow ups:

1. Any possible damage being caused by the aeration if I keep an eye on the reservoir level?

2. The dealer said he'd look for cracks in the tubing or poor clamping. If nothing there, a new pump? Sound right to you guys?

I just did this to my car and it was super easy. The hardest part was getting a wrench around the bolt. I am hoping that this will taker care of the early morning whine. I called around to a few different acura and honda dealers to see what it would have costed for them to do it and the cheapest quote I got was $40-$50 for parts and labor. I also found it strange how much of a price range there was from place to place. I ended up getting the inlet o-ring for $.75 and a bottle of PSF for $4.82 from a acura dealer. I thought a honda dealer would have been cheaper but I guess not.

Mine started whining last week when the weather warmed up, I've never had any of the cold weather incidents that have been reported in this thread.

I don't hear the noise until after I've driven the car a few miles(doesn't do it on start up). I changed the two O-rings on Friday and it's still noisy. The power steering fluid was very dirty, almost black, so I'm hoping doing a fluid flush will resolve the issue.

Update on this, I haven't gotten around to flushing the power steering fluid yet. I have noticed the car only makes the whining noise after it's been on the highway/at higher speeds. I can go in town, stop and go, etc. and it's fine but the minute I get off the interstate it's howling.

Could this possibly be a issue with the hose? My TL never went in for the recall.

Everyone and their mama should know about this.. but it's that time of year again..
Also.. if this doesn't solve it, time to reseal the pump or buy a refub'd one.. just recently changed the pump on the MDX.

Hello all. I replaced the hose and the joint as well as the o ring and it fixed the whining but there is still bubbles in my reservoir. Any ideas as to why this could be?

Air is entering the system somewhere. Do you see any leaks?

I have the same issue. Also, a whine when engine is warm. Hopefully changing the o-rings will fix this.

Have you had any luck?

Hello guys. im having a little bit of an issue here. my whine is back louder and making steering hard.

I replaced the O-rings on both hoses and rebuilt the power steering pump, I put it back and it was working great and super smooth for at least 4 weeks no whine at all even during really cold days. this weekend all of the sudden the whine came back as I was pulling out of the driveway I could not even turn to back out. so I jacked the car up and check the reservoir which was overflowing like crazy with lots of bubbles. one thing is clear.. there is air in the system.

I jacked up the car, flushed the PS fluid, took the reservoir out and completely got all the fluid out. I replaced it with new and clean PS fluid. then whine still there but not as bad and I can turn now. still a little hard but i can drive at least. now what could be wrong? I see no leaks and it only shows the fluid coming out of the reservoir. where can I look next ?

Whine noise at cold start

Hey guys,

Just bought my car 2016 fall. 2010 TL SH-AWD. I began to hear this whine at the beginning of winter when it was having cold starts. The noise is only there for the initial start after a cold night. If I were to turn off the car and start it again, the noise would disappear. The dealer said it was the tension, so I had that replaced. We had a cold night where I live and the noise is back. Now that I've done more reading on here and found this DIY with the o-ring, however the photos would not load for me. Does anyone have a link or know where I can find the DIY? I hate to bring the car back for such a cheap fix and pay the dealer 100+/hour plus parts.

Thanks guys in advance

1) Tell the dealer to kiss your ass and give your money back
2) I see the pics.. look for a vid on youtube otherwise, should be at least a couple

cool, thanks! i'll order 3 bottles.

one last question, does anyone know the OEM transmission fluid for TL-S? i've been reading all morning and according to some folks saying, DW1 replaced Z1 fluid? this is for AUTO TRANSMISSION.

Thanks!

I had the pump whine at startup, but the bigger problem was no power steering at low speeds or when trying to park. The other clue was the foam bubbles in the reservoir.

Relatively easy to replace with the proper wrench. I got a harbor freight 10mm stubby wrench from this set: https://www.harborfreight.com/12-pc-...set-61395.html

The box end on the harbor freight 10mm stubby fit the fastener perfectly. It shouldn't take much force to get the bolt loose. Then use your finger to rotate the fastener out.

Prestone power steering fluid is less than $3 at Walmart. There is a Prestone version specifically made for Honda/Acura.

An update after replacing the inlet o-ring to the pump with the new orange one...

The foam was all gone in the reservoir, but there were still some tiny bubbles being pushed through.

I ended up replacing the black colored outlet o-ring on the top of the pump (Part Number 91370-sv4-000). Those bubbles immediately went away. I noticed that o-ring was stiff and slightly flattened. Not quite as bad as the other inlet o-ring which was almost like a rock, but it definitely needed replacing.
