Question CV Axle Replacement

Hi guys,

So this is what happened to my front left end the other day while I was driving...

My question is what parts do I need to order to get this into the shop and fixed up? I have a mechanic that's been very good to me and will do work if I bring the parts in and I'm just curious what you guys think I'll need to pick up for everything to get back to normal. It's an 07 with 150xxx km on it and I've been down some rough roads the past couple of years. I'll be heading down to the shop in a couple of days to talk to a mechanic when I have another car available but would love some input. I'm thinking I should order the CV axle assembly for both sides and do then while he's down there as well as tie rods and bushings. Is there other parts I need to get this fixed or just the axle assembly?

Note: For anyone that can see my post history, I've ordered the type S front and rear from Aeroworks and will be putting them on my car this summer so stay tuned for fitment pics!

I think you also need the lower ball joint.

Did you cut the lower ball joint to make room for the repair or maybe the lower ball joint failed and that caused the axle to break.

Order them for both sides. APWI's from rockauto are the way to go.

I second the motion; by far the best axles for the money.

wow...I'm still confused how people are able to break their ball joints like this? is it from years of neglecting to replace once they show signs of wear? car doesn't look lowered so it can't be suspension modifications?

Do both sides. When mine finally failed (driver's side) the other one wasn't too far behind.

I just realized there may be damage to the knuckle area (see image below). If you could take a picture of the knuckle, we might be able to tell you what else looks damaged. A close-up picture of the area that holds the lower ball joint (circled in red) might also be helpful.

Here is a link to a youtube video. The accord seems to have had a similar problem.

Thanks for the help guys. I've only had the vehicle for about 2 years now and I am the second owner. I have no idea how this happened but was planning on replacing outer tie rods and lower ball joints before this happened. I will be ordering the CV axles for both sides. The car is parked outside on some jacks so I'll try to get some extra photos as well. There haven't been any suspension modifications but hopefully I can get her back up and running soon.

So here's some photos I got. It looks like the lower ball joint failed and that's what caused the CV axle failure. Anything else I should add to my shopping list? Possibly replacing the front wheel bearings while I'm there?

I've already got a set of ACDelco's I was going to put in just before this accident happened. Hopefully they don't have problems like the Moog ball joints have been reported to have.
