CV Joint cracking?
CV Joint cracking?
Hi guys, I just got a voicemail from my dealer that my other car (Mazda MX6) has 2 front CV joints that are cracking. They aren't leaking yet, according to him, but they might soon. It will cost about $975 (parts + labor) to replace.
Questions:
What is a CV joint?
What will happen if it starts to leak?
Should I replace it?
What should I do???? $975 is a shitload of $$$!
Thanks!

If you catch them while they're just starting to leak you can just replace the boot. I already did one on my CL (grand total of $30) and did a couple on my old Accord (bought rebuilt entire halfshafts to make the job easy $70 each). So to answer your question, they're RIPPING YOU OFF.

If anyone can hook me up with parts/labor/something like that in San Jose CA, I'd be eternally grateful!!! I did a quick check on prices, and they run something like $75 per side for the half shafts.
Please DO NOT PAY THAT PLACE to rip you off! I replaced both my CV axles with brand new (rebuilt) ones for only $55 each. Do a little shopping around and you will find a good price. Easy to do if you have a service manual. Good luck...

Bro,
I once had a 93 Mazda Protege, I was too lazy to do it myself, complete CV joints left and right, I paid $185, and that was after a month of it clicking away loudly. Mazda has some of the most expensive parts of any other Japanese model, with the exception of Mitsubishi, maybe Subaru, but come on, drive to SoCal, we can both work on it, might cost us $110 tops...Oh yeah with the ever fine blue book value of Mazda vehicles, you could probably find an old school MX-6 for about $975, J/K!

To answer part of your original question. "CV" joints are constant velocity joints and are the equivilent of universal joints. They are at the ends of your half shafts. If the rubber boot cracks then dirt and stuff gets into the joint, lube gets out and it wears out quickly. Usually you have lots of notice (noise) before it actually fails. If its just the boot, that's an easy fix. If the joint is bad that's something you do need to address, but $975 is a liitttlle much!
That's a total ripoff!! My CV boot and joint cracked in my old Accord and I got it replaced and fixed for under $150.
But as everyone has said, if you hear clicking when your turning that's a sign that it's about to fail.
