Car won't go into gear !!

Ok, so I drive a tl s 5at and since yesterday my car will not go into any gear. The only way to get it to go into gear is to pop that little thing beside the shift and stick a flat head screw driver into it to get it to go into gear. Now this sucks because I have an 08 Tl s and no warranty! Anybody know what this could be your hellp would really be appreciated.

If the shift lock solenoid is defective, you won't be able to move the lever. However, the solenoid receives information from, I'm going to say a shift lock system ecu. This computer controls the key lock solenoid and shift lock solenoid based on signals from the shift position switch and stop light switch.

Check to make certain the brake lights are working when brakes applied, and also check for blown fuse, ealier years #32. You can also check for voltage at the solenoid, under the console, but other than that, there seems to be specific test equipment needed and a series of tests that can be tried.

I agree with Turbonut,

This is a common problem caused by a faulty brake light switch. Check if your brake lights come on when you apply the brake. If you have *no* brake light when pressing the brake pedal, then your brake switch needs to be replaced.

Probably not a tranny issue, most likely the brake switch.

How do you have no warranty on a 2008 already?

Unless the mods directly caused the failure, the car should still be under warranty. The brake switch should be covered. You don't lose your factory warranty for modifying the car.

check out the avatar of him smoking his wheels.. I can just imagine the following convo at Acura.

Acura Service Rep: "We won't honor your warranty due to obvious vehicle abuse.."

Gary TL S: "What! That's ridiculous!"

My bet is the sprintbooster.. j.k. Gary, go get a new brake light switch and sell the sprintbooster while you can before I make a DIY sprintbooster for $5.. lol.

lol thanx you guys made me feel a little better with the jokes ahah truth is my acura dealership i bought the car from said my warranty is void because of all the mods and before I could argue they closed down due to recession Im guessing and I called Honda Canada and they clearly do not give a rats ass so I guess im screwed. Brake switch? I checked and my lights still work so could it still be my brake switch or could it just be the shift lock silinoid(sorry if mis-spelled)

So try a different dealer? A dealership can claim anything, it doesn't make it true. Unless the mods caused the part failure, your warranty is not void.

yeah... each dealership is different...

It might be the shift lock solenoid.. If your brake lights are on when press the brake pedal it probably isn't the brake light switch (although a faulty brake light switch may have intermittent operation). The 2nd diagnostic step is checking your accelerator pedal position input.. so the sprintbooster may actually be the culprit (especially since your car is so new). Bypass / Unplug the sprintbooster and see if that works.. if not, then you'd diagnose the APP before moving down to check the shift lock solenoid. I haven't heard of anyone having a faulty shift lock solenoid yet. GL on getting it to work!

Hey, so I got a 2007 TL-S And have the same issue. No fuse issue and I have brake lights.... Did you get this fixed? Additionally, if I use a key to get it into gear, once in drive, I won't go out of D/N.... Getting annoying. My wife accidentally spit lemonade on the console like two days before it happened. Maybe that could have a part in it as well??

I have the exact same issue today. I spilled gatorade in the console/shifter and 2 days later I have this problem. My brake lights work and no fuse issue, therefore I am curious to know how this was resolved. I will try the shift lock solenoid switch as it seems more plausible.

2004 Acura TL won't go into gear

I purchased a 2004 Acura TL earlier this year and woke yesterday to go to work and the car wouldn't go into gear. My mechanic first disconnected the battery in an effort to reset the computer. When this wasn't successful and the right before the he popped that cap to disengage the gear he checked the fuse and wah lah! It was a fuse! Hope this works for someone!

My 2006 tl wont go into gear, but the stick moves freely to all positions. My question to you is, did your stick move freely while your car wouldnt go into gear

Thread is a bit old so many folks who posted won't answer!

Check the transmission fluid level in your car. The fluid should be pinkish red! Anything dark means the fluid is burnt and you might need some trans work.

Are you sure the car isn't going into gear? If one of your axles broke, you may well experience the same symptoms.

Hey Gary .. prolly already figured out ur issue but I'll put it up anyway . The brake light switch is likely faulty . It's above brake pedal easy to change not too pricy
