Gear shift lock and radio-coincidence??

Hey all-
Just registered and got a problem already-

Wife has a 2003 TL we bought used and I just found out she's had this problem for months (mental note: drive your spouse's vehicle at least once a month):

The gear shift locks up and requires using the by-pass with the key most of the time now. At the same time she has lost stereo-checking for code to see if this fixes that, but just not sure if one goes with the other.

She also mentioned that for the first time to lights in the gear shift console (P,D,N,R, etc.) have come on and then off the next time then on-kinda sporadically

Any thoughts-are we looking a separate issues (besides all possible electrical) or will say a new solenoid fix er? Thanks

Welcome to the forum. First thing to check is does she have brake lights? There is a part that sometimes fails called a brake switch that requires you to use the shift lock, but also at teh same time your brake lights dont work. There is also a fuse to check to see if thats blown.

as for the radio?? are you saying it doesnt work?

This is the DIY for the brake switch.

Yes-check brake lights fist thing, but they work fine. As for stereo it has no display and won't work except to eject and accept cds. That's all. thanks

brake light switch may be out of adjustment/worn and need replace even though it works as it runs the Nuetral safety lockout

Fsstyms- is there also a standard Nuetral safety switch in there that spilled drink could be messing with? or is the brake light switch the master control?

Stereo- assuming you have correct security code, unplug the antenna connection and wait a few minutes- replace antena connection and try again

It could be in the ignition switch or the brake switch. Most likely its the brake switch. There have been 1 or 2 with a ignition that caused it. It could be the shifter itself, but its unlikely

Radio, does it power up at all to say "CODE" ???

Sorry for the delay-holidays...
Oddly enough the radio has been coming on and going off randomly now, does not request code and jumps to whatever button was pushed last-cd, fm1, etc., but not a permanent thing.

Neutral lock is still full time problem. Is there a selanoid that controls this that might be on the fritz or shot? If so do you know where it is located?

Thanks.
