Can the purge valve solenoid fail without a code being generated?

Do you get the error message "tighten fuel cap"? I don't recall a CEL thrown with mine but its been awhile.

Maybe a stupid question, but what if you do not replace the purge valve and still get the tighten gas cap message forever? Will not replacing the purge valve hurt the car?
