Replacing Gas Cap and Tether, trouble getting old gas cap off
Hey guys, I recently got a system message saying that I need to tighten my gas cap; I checked it was tight so I figured I'd buy a new gas cap.
Trouble is I can't seem to find a way to take the old tether off; there is a rubber cap on top and I attempted to pry it off but I dont want to break anything.
Anyone have any idea how to remove the tether and the bolt holding it? I asked a mechanic and he told me I would have to remove a panel on the outside leading to the fuel tank but that doesn't seem logical to me. I've tried googling it to no avail, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I checked shop manual and found nothing on gas cap replacement. I found an image which suggests a single bolt retainer? Is it not accessible w/ ratchet, extension, and socket?
It's a clam shell assemble that needs some gentle persuasion
It is a clam shell assembly that wraps around the tether peg. My MDX does not have an angle clearance to get pliers on the back side. I pulled on the assembly while compressing the back side with my fingers. I stretched it a bit and was finally able to get it loose. After i removed it from the car, I used my fingernails to pull the clam shell open.
I love driving my Acura but they over complicate some of their designs. My Toyota truck had a Christmas tree plug that was clipped to pull out the old one and pushed the new one into the hole to install.
Was curious about clam shell because my tether has a washer look and was wondering how to attach, I have a 2010 RDX, the newer models are capless, I will I could get one for the 2010
