Another one bites the dust

So, this morning it finally happened.
Trans crapped out on me.

It was 27 degrees and let the car warm up for about 10 minutes.
Went to put car in gear ( reverse ) but it didnt engage.
Put it in Drive, didnt engage either.

Eventually reverse engaged and was able to pull out of driveway.
Placed in D and had to keep going from P N D, and it eventually worked.

Drove down the street and the car felt like it went into neutral. After depressing the accelerator it got back into gear.

Drove it home and left it in the driveway.
Damn, I really didnt want to spend the 2k this month to get the trans rebuilt.

best part is I replaced a seized caliper on Saturday and drove the car around without a problem.
didnt drive the car all day yesterday until this morning.

Didn't you have problems with it already for a good moment? This was somewhat expected to happen.

Its sad to say but i'm sure the warning signs have been apparent for months, and unfortunately, ignoring the signs only means pushing D day to when you dont expect it. My tranny took about 6-8 months from early warnings to death. Weird because my CEL came on only hours before the car was not drivable, giving me a torque converter related code. The good news is you'll have a new transmission shortly and won't have to worry about the most common major failure on our gen.

Was hoping this trans would hold up until December/January.

Guess I'll have to accelerate my car purchase. I still plan on getting this trans rebuilt so I can use that as my commuter car / beater.

but damn, what a crappy morning it was.

Did you try anything to help make it last longer, per chance? Simply wondering.

First thing I did was drain and fill using redline d4. Following that I would changed the atf every 5k miles. So two more drain and fills after using the redline.
Now im here today.
Fluid is still red and doesnt smell burnt or anything.

I also changed out the pressure sensors which I bought a year or so ago. Going to run me 2300 to get it rebuilt. The shop owner is pretty busy now and says he wont probably get to it until early December. So the car will hibernate in my driveway until then.

Heard it was more of a bitch to swap out to a MT trans.
Will cost more than rebuilding. Plus, im looking at getting a new car which will have a manual trans.
Pretty much will just use the TL, ( sad as it may sound ), as my beater to get me to the park and ride.

Im hesitant in junking it since the engine is running great. For a 174k miles vehicle its in really great condition with the exception of its transmission.

edit: I just figured out what you mean by AV6. I looked into it but the shop wouldnt guarantee or warranty it. Since its coming out of a different car.
Plus, the local AV6 trans I found have a lot of mileage on them. Over 120k. I would tackle this job myself but I dont have the necessary tools or equipment for this job.

So im getting my trans rebuilt.
Dropping her off next week when I return from my trip.

In the meantime I just purchased these parts so they can replace it while the trans is down

They are:

both lower trans mounts
upper trans mount
rear main seal

anything else I should look into replacing while the trans is down?

Front and Rear engine mounts are still good so i'll replace them later.

Sorry about your transmission. Those mounts are a good idea, may also be a good idea to replace trans-axles if you haven't at all with that mileage.

I'm keen on the AV6 swap (if/when), for only to attempt to rebuild the original TL transmission myself and have a "new" spare.

It'd be a no rush job and I'd know it was done right, lol, even in having never done one.

Car is ready to be picked up.
Going this evening to bring her back home.

According to the shop, the clutches were burnt ( didnt specify which set ) and the torque converter was toast.

He cleaned the valve body + bores, replaced seals ( assuming this comes with a transmission overhaul kit )

I'll provide more details later.

Car drives great. Reminds me of when I first purchased it.

things that were done to the transmission:

Hard Parts cleaned
Soft parts replaced
Valve body cleaned polished
Valve body upgrade performed ( dont know what that means)
Torque converter replaced
Clutch discs replaced
internal / external filters replaced
shift fork bearing

other parts I had them replace for me

Front Engine mount
Rear Engine mount
Transmission mounts ( all three)
Rear Main seal

The steering wheel needs to be zero'd in. It's a bit off but I can live with it until I get a future alignment.

Next project is to change the brake fluid and replace e-brake shoes

After trans removal the car needs to be aligned as the lower subframe is removed.

The performance upgrade is from a few companies who specialize in transmission that allow for more cooling and more flow to the insides of the transmission. Americanpowertrainwarehouse sells a bunch of the kits to help improve the longevity of your trans.

Id replace the trans fluid the next time you change your oil (within the next 10K) and do a fluid change every other oil change for maximum life from your trans.

What are some warning signs I should be looking out for?
I've started to notice gears are being held a bit longer than usually -- but i dont know if thats just placebo or not...

Last year I've replaced the pressure switches and have done a 3x3 and am doing drain and fills every 2 oil changes
