Windshield - many scratches, repair

Hi.

I just bought Acura TL 2008. I'm very happy, it's a great car. However the only thing I didn't see were scratches on the windshield. They are visible only when sun in really low, or at night when I'm driving under lights at intersection. I didn't saw them during test drives - they are not visible when sun in high.

They look like somebody tried to polish windshield with rotary polisher, but had a bad pad or some sand/dirt under it. Basically small "circles" are visible on whole lenght of the windshield. I don't know if it was just some idiot or he tried to cover even worse scratches.

Those scratches are not deep - I can't feel them with fingernail.

Satelite online quote says that replacement will cost about ~$320. I didn't tried in any other company. I don't have many tools, including rotary polisher. I would prefer to buy some tools, if there is a chance of fixing the windshield.

I know that there is couple of threads like that, but I didn't found any with scratches made in such process.

What you guys think? Just replace it or better take chances and try to fix it ?
There's also couple weeks left of carmax one-month warranty. Maybe it's worth a try ?

Thanks.

Not sure if i'd be covered under carfax warranty.

Depending on your state your may have glass covered on your insurance free of charge. There is a polishing kit you can buy to try to remove the scratches but at the end of the day I'd just opt for a new windshield.

If it were any other glass on the car, I'd try polishing with cerium oxide, but on the windshield, I'd go for a replacement. Polishing the windshield can result in possible distortion.

Not a big "risk", though.

Ultimately a windshield will cost you more than trying to fix it, and if you mess it up and distort your windshield trying to fix it, well you only spent $30 more than you would have if you just changed your windshield from the start.

Do it in the shade, monitor closely heat of the windshield by tapping the glass with your fingers. If you can't hold there at least a second, it's too hot and you're about to mess things up.
