5th to 6th Gear Issue
All right so I finally have my new TL. I love it- best decision I have made in a while. However I have noticed a peculiar issue. If I am accelerating up past 40-45 mph there is an intermittent issue shifting into 6th gear. It simply will not go in. What I wind up doing after trying to shift into 6th is re-engage 5th gear, then immediately shift into 6th. That seems to work most of the time. If I am up to speed (70-75 mph) going in and out of 6th is not a problem. Just during acceleration. I have been unable to correlate it to RPM, temperature, etc. At a stop, no problem- though it does seem a bit 'rougher' but it is difficult to be sure.
Some thoughts:
Could this be related to the reverse gear solenoid?
Misaligned linkage?
Computer issues?
I called the dealer on Monday- the soonest they could look at it this Friday- with no loaner! They seemed a bit confused about the whole thing and had no ideas.
Did I mention I have only 400 miles on the car? The car drove great when I took delivery. No 6th gear issue.
Thoughts? Thanks!

I had a learning curve with that as I hadn't driven a 6 speed before. I don't remember when but early on, knowing "where" 6th was became natural. Now I usually don't shift into 6th gear until at least 60, usually 75. It's a blast running through the gears. Just my .02

I'm guessing you are trying to put it in 6th at too low a speed. What type of rpm are you running in 6th at 40 mph? I'll bet you're lugging the crap out of the engine. I'm not sure you have a problem there.

^I agree. If you look in the owners manual, it has the suggested lowest speed for each gear, and I think 40, 45 MPH is a bit low for 6th. I don't think I've ever shifted into 6th below 55~60.
Even in 5th, the RPM is tad below 2k @ 40 MPH, so I'd think 6th would be around 1500... a bit low, IMO.

Like NC Silver aid, It may just be getting used to where 6th gear's "gates" are.

Strictly speaking, there is distinct issue with engaging the 6th gear- regardless of MPH, RPM, temperature, etc. Took the car to the dealership last night and went for a test drive with a service rep. To say he was surprised was an understatement. There is definately something binding, preventing me from going into 6th. I will let you know if they find any thing- and if the problem is actually fixed.

I agree with the other's here that your shifting in 6th way too early. I barely ever go in 6th, its a cruising gear. I only shift the car in 6th when I'm going over 75m or more.

Keep Right Except to Pass
When I first got my TL in 2004 I noticed that the shift from 5th to 6th doesn't seem as straight back as the 1-2 and 3-4 shifts. My brother noticed the same thing when he shifted into 6th the one time I let him drive the TL. It seems to me to be just slightly further to the right , almost like it's a \ shift instead of a | shift (for lack of a better way to describe it). Once I figured that out, I've never had a nother problem shifting to 6th. Try applying a very slight rightward pressure as you shift to 6th, though not so much as to catch the neutral gate, and see if that helps.
