The gauge in the TL is more accurate than in other cars I've driven. Whereas most fuel gauges I've seen will sit pegged on F until you've gone 50-100 miles, the TL's will start going down right away. What is your actual MPG? This is easy to figure out. Fill the car up. Reset your trip odometer. Drive until you fill up again. Look at how many gallons you put in. Look at the trip odometer. Divide the miles by the gallons. So, if you drive 100 miles and put 4 gallons in, you're getting 100/4, or 25mpg. Go do that, then report back here.
Also, please supply us with more info as we don't know what you consider to be unacceptable fuel usage. There are just so many factors which can and will determine an engine's fuel use, so you really need to tell us more.. we are here to help you.
My refilled my gas tank when my 05 auto TL's light was on, and it cost me only $46 to fill up the tank, and I drove 100 miles and it went down halfway. I put in another $20 to fill it back up again. When i am driving on city, it showed that I was averaging 14-16 mpg when I was gassing it under 2 rpm! When I got on the highway, it averaged me out to about 25. After the 100 miles of highway driving, my avg mpg meter shows that I am still averaging 22 mpg, but it hardly ever goes down or go up. Please tell me why it only cost me $46 to fill up my gas tank which is 17 gallons?
Your MPG is not low. This is not an overly fuel-efficient car. If you want that, trade your TL in on an Insight
Remember that the average includes the city driving as well as the highway driving. You remember from school that when you got a bad grade, it killed your GPA even if you had all A's everywhere else. Same thing here. A low mpg stint in the city will kill your average.
It only cost you $46 because you didn't put 17 gallons in. And you didn't put 17 gallons in because there was still gas in the tank when you got to the gas station. You probably put closer to 13 or 14 gallons in, which would work out to $3.50 or $3.30 or so per gallon respectively. And it looks like that's in the ballpark for Cali gas prices right now.

how much gasoline do I still have in my gas tank when my light turns on? Does anyone know? Also thank you very much shadowkahn for the advice, but my trip odometer shows that I am running on an average of 15 =/ the meter on my gas tank also goes down pretttty quickly .. is it the same for everyone else? I had a 1995 bmw 318i that ran 18mpg at city as well, but that car last me a lot longer than my acura =/
Oh!! Now wonder.. so when my light comes on I still have 4-5 gallons .. and I don't know what "miles to go" is yet.. Im pretty new with the car.. so im trying to get some more info off this forum. It cost me $20 .. which is about 6 gallons of gas to fill up HALF of it .. is that right ? Does that mean the other HALF of my gas has a lot more than it shows ?
Fuel gauges are not always completely accurate. In fact they're designed to be inaccurate, so that if you decide to pull a dumbass move and refuse to get gas even though the gauge is right at E, you still have a little gas left to get you to the station. There's really no reason to obsess over where the needle points. When it gets close to E, go get gas. Calculate your mileage by looking to see how far you've driven since the last fillup, and looking to see how many gallons (cost is meaningless, because gas prices fluctuate) you put in.
I got back last Friday from a vacation trip and used my '04 manual TL. Just me and the wife were in the car with our luggage. Total mileage driven was 1,036 miles. Conditions were interstate highway, two and four-lane roads, beach town traffic (and other stop and go traffic), and just traveling around the resort. The A/C was used for a good part of the trip and the entire trip back home. Overall mileage for the trip was 28 MPG. Best on one leg coming back (A/C on) was 30.9 MPG.
Car has over 74,000 miles on it and the tires are Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus (one year old). This is decent mileage for a vacation trip in a manual TL.

So, when my light came on I drove it a little more and I got gas. Filled up my tank with $46 with Premium @ gas price $3.3 per gallon. That calculates to be about 13.6 GALLONS .. which means I still have about 3.4 gallons left when they light came on. Now, I see why the gauge drops everytime I drive.. but I guess its prettty decent. Anyway to IMPROVE the mileage though? Will a Carb stickered CAI help? AEM v2 CAI? Suggestions anyone?
