[Automatic Transmission] Sudden failure. Won't engage anymore.
2004 TL with Automatic transmission
I was sitting at a red light last night and when I hit the gas to accelerate on green, I heard a *bang* noise and lost power to the wheels.
I am unable to move the shiftgate above 'Reverse' while the engine is running. I can shift into 'Park' only after I shut-off the engine.
While the the shiftgate is in 'Park' the car can be pushed around the same as if it were in 'Neutral.'
Do any knowledgeable people have ideas on how to remedy this?

Sounds like you accelerated hard and broke an axle. However I'm not sure about the shifting to park issue. There's a few threads on this forum with the same issue. I'd do a search.

Yep
You were right.
I've been giving this some thought. It occurred to me that if there is a mechanism in the transmission that prevents a driver from shifting into reverse while the car is flying down the highway, then it must be what's at work here. Even with the car not moving, the half-shaft must be spinning since the stopped tire is no longer attached to the drivetrain, fooling the mechanism into thinking the car is in motion.
I'll dig into replacing it tomorrow and hope nothing else has gone wrong.
