Unhappy Failure to Engage Reverse on 2001 MDX

Hi all,
I was driving around town today just fine, came home, parked the MDX. When I started the car up to leave again, it would not engage in reverse. There were no noises earlier and none when I started the car up again. The reverse just seemed stuck.
Has anyone encountered this issue and, if so, how was it fixed.
Thanks.

Does it engage going forward? When last did you check the ATF and/or have it flushed or changed?

NBP04TL4ME - I had the ATF fluid changed this past July. The Reverse gear is the 1st one before I can go to drive or to neutral, so can't get past reverse. I popped the Shift Lock Release cap and used a screwdriver to unlock the shift lever, but it doesn't stay unlocked. I have to use the screwdriver each time now I need to drive anywhere. Thanks.

I misunderstood what you were describing as the issue. I thought it was a problem was with the transmission itself and not the gearshift selector.

Have you blown any fuses? Do your brake lights still work?

These threads may be some help in determining if it might be your brake switch - https://acurazine.com/forums/first-g...e-park-465109/

The brake lights do not work. I changed the fuse for the STOP Lights, but they still do not work. I have not checked the inside cab fuses yet. The cruise control, alarm and blinkers don't work anymore either.

So based on your description the fact that you can't move the gearshift selector may only be a symptom of another issue at hand. I would definitely get into the fuses and see if there are one or more blown.
How old is your battery? Dead or dying batteries have been known to manifest themselves in all sorts of oddities.

Hey I had this same issue a few years ago with my 01 Accord. Same symptoms from the brake lights not working to the cruise control being useless and no fuses being burned out. The problem is the brake pedal switch. No doubt about it. It's a simple swap out too and the part isn't too expensive.

Edit: The shifter will not stay unlocked either.

Yes, updates! I took the MDX to the dealer and they discovered that the Uhaul hitch had a burned out converter and/or wiring. They charged quite a lot for the diagnostics ($103 and that was with a $30 discount if I gave them a 5-star review online!!!). They wanted to charge me up to $350 to fix the problem and I thought that was excessive, so I took it to the Uhaul. They fixed the problem, but since it was out-of-warranty, I had to pay another $73. Not all the issues were resolved though, so once again 2 days later, I went back to the dealer and after arguing about another new estimate and excessive charge of $190 to fix the rest of the issues, they ended up not charging me at all to complete what they started 2 days earlier. Thanks for all your help on this one!

And, yes, all the fuses to the affected functions were blown. I thought that the dealer had changed the fuses during the 1st visit, but found out on the 2nd visit that they tried to and the fuses kept blowing. They didn't bother to tell me that the 1st time.
