Warped front rotors?
Warped front rotors?
Noticed steering wheel is shaking badly when brake is applied on the highway.
Went to check the front rotors, found out that front left is warped
Pretty sure previous owner changed brake pad only without machining the rotors
However brake pads were installed last year per previous owner, dealer told me 30% left when installing winter tires on last nov.
Here are some of my options
1. Dealer wants $322 for replacing front new pads, machine rotors
2.dealer wants $530 for replacing front both pads rotors
3. A service technician who do some cash jobs on weekends wants $60 labour for replacing rotor only
4. Independent garage for machine rotor only, will call tomorrow for pricing
ps: can I just change one rotor?
Can I just change rotor without changing pads?
Pls comment below, any advice is appreciated.
Thanks

it is best to do your rotors in a set. You can do this work yourself quite easily
1. New rotors are about $100 for 2
2. New pads are about $50
loosen lugs
jack car up
remove lugs
remove tire
press piston back into caliper (I used a large scewdriver and since I was replacing pads and rotors). other things that work are C-clamps and brute force.
remove caliper pins
hang caliper from spring using a coat hanger
remove 2 bolts holding caliper bracket on, remove bracket
using impact hammer remove 2 screws holding rotor on
remove rotor
clean hub and put anti seize on it where the rotor makes contact
install new rotor
reinstall screws or leave them out (I left them out)
reinstall caliper bracket
clean pins and lubricate with caliper pin grease
install new pad/shims onto bracket
reinstall caliper using upper pin
rotate caliper down, reinstall lower pin.
as you finish each side
Have a friend get into car and pump brake as you bleed the caliper out. If you have NOT changed your brake fluid, now is a good time to bleed each caliper until clear fluid comes out. Add fluid as the level gets to the min line on the resivoir. Order is not really important.
when done put wheels back on and snug up lugs
lower car and tighten lugs to spec (80 ft-lbs I believe) check again in 3 days or 50 miles

sorry, I got some additional questions
I decided to go with option3, pay $60 to the guy for replacing rotors and pads
shall I get OEM pads and rotors? If not, what's the best on the market? don't really wanna cheap out on brakes
dealer ask $92 for pads and $139.9 for one rotor!
I'm here in Canada and can't really order online thru rockauto or brake motive. Shipping and duties are just too much hassel, thanks again

I paid in total 167.32+119.29 CAD total for my Brakemotive setup, shipped to Ottawa.
The 119.29 (115 USD) is for all shipping, duties, and taxes.
Still not a bad price, but there's a place TL Seth went to in Richmond Hill that offers a similar price and product, but without the shipping and duty cost.
AND if you're just looking for regular rotors, NAPA sells the "premium" rotors which seem like they would work just fine as OEM.

Do it yourself. I helped a member change his out on his TSX. Simple. Even easier if Brembo. But if you insist on someone else doing the job. Watch them do it and learn. The more you learn and do on your own, the more you save $$.
bought it from silverhill acura after price matched to another dealer,
Parts person there is very nice, bought pads for $92, rotors $95*2, brake fluid $7.61*2 and another 10% off too. Paid $281, which I consider not bad, compared to NaPa or rock auto.
Im sticking with OEM because they are pretty durable apparently?
