What are your overall goals and budgets? Desired HP levels, cars purpose (street/track), your skill levels, what are you willing to invest and how far are you wanting to go for power?
As you me mentioned, you can do internals and really wake the bolt on mods up -OR- you can go with an easy wet shot of nitrous (25-75hp)...and if you really wanna play, you can do a build. Problem is if this is your dd, you'll need a spare engine to build and j35a8 engines aren't cheap even used. I bought my j37a1 block (basically a j35a8 with 90mm cylinders) brand new at Acura for around $700. Why buy a used j35a8 for $800-1400 when all you can really use is the block (maybe) and a few of the rotating components? The j37 bottom end components are just about the same price (some cheaper) as the j35a8.

^^^Approved.
You need torque and that's EXACTLY what the 3.7 is all about.
Increasing displacement is the only true way to gain an appreciable amount of torque. Especially for the j-series as they are high reving motors and make their power up top. I remember the first time I put my foot down on our last MDX (2007) with the 3.7, I was shocked at how easy the motor pulled the weight with ease. And now that we have a later model MDX (2010), the engine in conjunction with the 6-spd auto really wakes the motor up all through out the engines powerband.
Otherwise, nitrous is an immediate form of torque.

If you really want to do full bolt ons I'd recommend our XLR8 lightweight crank pulley, P2R thermal gaskets, XLR8 Engine Mounts and ETD, P2R ported runners, and also some suspension and brake upgrades. If you need more info or advice email me at sales@excelerateperformance.com

What kind of racing are you doing?
Do you track your TL? Road course? or Drag?
Or do you do fast & furious stop light street racing Paul Walker style?
One thing to keep in mind good sir, is that this is a 3500~ LBs 4 door luxury sedan, not really much of a 'race' car without some serious build.
Surprisingly enough though the TL can be a great track car with the right setup and skills.
*Disclaimer: I am by no means against performance mods ... but I am not a fan of kids who street race on public streets, no offense.

Pcd jpipe full exhaust all rv6 cai aem and tuned with hondata making 265 whp
Lets break this down in case you are not understanding.
RV6 exhuast imo isn't enough for a full bolt on car. You need a 3" to dual 2.5" exhaust.
Next PnP runners
Then PnP intake manifold and TB OR 3.7 intake manifold and ZDX TB.
Lastly UDP (debatable)
To go further you can take out weight and/or get some lighter wheels.

1) Determine what your goals are!
- Us speculating here does you no good...
2) Budget for it!
- Without funds, dreams are dreams...
3) Execute!
- Don’t talk about it, be about it...
Hope this helps; good luck with the build.

This really IS the next best step by far for better driving experience.
Other than that, I would say Nitrous for instant torque. Though I honestly can't remember a time when I didn't have enough torque available to break the front wheels loose off the line. If you're expecting additional torque/power to get you off the line, you are sorely mistaken.
