I might look into doing this. But for the mean time, does removing the stock covers besides the engine cover help cool the engine quicker? My car was ridiculously slow yesterday after driving home from work yesterday and then going out 30 mins later due to the insane heat we had

^^^ Story, think of it this way....you want more FRESH COLD air in the engine bay and in the intake....

the cold air in the intake will help keep IAT's low....the cold air in the bay will keep your ambient temps in the bay lower....

to go about doing that, you have to first vent the hot air out....hence THIS MOD....

then to get cold air in, you can either do some ducting (as mentioned very little to no room for this), or you can do a sharkmouth grille, or you can do hood vents, etc....

so just look at the existing grilles and radiator positioning and intake filter positioning and see how you can get the cold-"er" outside air into the engine bay

Has anyone ever painted the cowl? It would probably look dumb body matched say a KBP but NBP could look good.

Thoughts?

Could be cool...it'll never get nailed with rocks or anything, but then you'd lose the contrast of a different finish. I'm not sure it'd be worth it.

Just a thought. What about using a small lawnmower filter in the fresh air whole vs completely sealing. It would help prevent engine heat and fumes from coming into the cabin. What do you think?

J-man....

I have done this mod since over 3 years....I have been through hot/cold/snow/rain....I dont get any fumes/etc in the car....

the reason I dont have it blocked, is because if there is a coolant leak/etc, I would like to "smell" and make sure whats going on....

Same here. I had some exhaust fumes for a little while from a poor job of blocking off my EGR ports. I initially diagnosed it an exhaust leak from my HFPC's. I've since fixed that. There were a few days in the summer when I got that "really hot engine" smell. But it was rare since I usually had the AC cranked up with recirculation on. It was only when I turned off recirc. that I noticed it. And even then, it was only when I was stopped at a light or in heavy traffic with the AC on.

When I first did the mod I thought it might be more of a problem, but it hasn't been.

I'd strongly reconsider this modification.

These fenderwell CAIs are silly as well. Do you guys not realize that ambient temps at near street surfaces approach 130+ degrees on 90+ degree days? Expose the filter like Inaccurate did and now you open up the potential for all sort of debris to pummel and lodge itself in the filter media. The OEM intakes on your cars, while quiet, are very efficent and become pressurized at speed due to the location and the way the ducting is shaped. More importantly, the air brought in is ambient and not as influenced by street temps. I have yet to see anyone post a 3rd party dyno of a CAI either. From what I can tell, everyone is apparently buying these things based on what the aftermarket companies say and the incorrect notion that the OEM intake is restrictive because it's "ugly". It's so far from the truth.

I'm all for Shade Tree mods, but sometimes you need to step back and research and understand why highly paid engineers do the things they do.

FYI the air is not pressurized at any speed a car can go. You'd need to be going over 250MPH to get any sort of pressurization. The factory intake is designed to grab air from the same spot and the grille keeps debris out of the filter. The factory intake is somewhat restrictive due to the resonator and chambers to help reduce noise and keep water out.

CAI's are literally a straight pipe that feeds air into the engine rather than the complex factory system. There are a few dynos with the CAI on here but most of them only net 3-4WHP which isn't much at the end of the day. Most people do it for the sound.

I recently removed cowl on my CL. Washed the car without blocking the AC hole. Tried to not spray water near that area. After I was done washing, noticed water spots on the inside of the windshield only on passenger side. For my car it needs to be blocked or cowl reinstalled.

Not sure if I'll leave it off.

This thread is about removing the cowl to reduce under hood temps. An awesome mod but, more for the hardcore since you need to close off the Climate control outside air feed. Works great for turbo cars.

Saw no one really ever answered this properly. There is a trick to getting them off. First you need to push down on the arm near the middle before trying to lift the ends. Pushing it down gives you proper angle to lift, otherwise you are using force against the threads.
