Smile Shorten Shifter on 6MT??

Anyone know if there is a mod to shorten the shifter length of on a 6MT? I'm not talking about the comptech ss that shortens the throws, I'm talking about the actual rod lengthi in the shifter, I want one that isn't so tall (like a g35!)

Anyone??

i think if you were to just change the knob to a smaller on it would apear smaller. i pulled off my knob and replaced it with my cousins knob and it was a lot shorter.. but too bad it didnt fit. if you find anything let me know. i would like to do this also

I'm not sure that will accomplish making it alot shorter. I want to trim it my 1-2 inches.

I'm thinking the way to go about this is to either somehow cut the rod inside the shifter or replace it with a shorter rod.

Any suggestions? anyone??

Have you tried screwing the shift knob all the way down? with the MT, you have the ability to change the length by doing this. Hope this helps...

I installed the Comptech Short Shifter. It is one of the best mods you can do. The shifter height doesnt change but in my opinion its already low enough.
Check this out.

I didn't know you could do this.. could you elaborate on how to do this? thanks!!

Although I would assume some other shift rod would fit as a replacement...

This is what I did on my 6th gen Accord. The shifter was way too tall so I cut the shifter. I had a MOMO shift knob so they don't thread on so I didn't even need to rethread it. You don't want to take off too much b/c that will change the structural integrity of the shifter.

dye, die, whichever way you want to spell it, as in tap & die. Means rethreading it.

http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/tl_met...270183,00.html

Scroll down to "Die Cutting."

It's just a matter of finding the right spec die. Then you simply turn/screw it onto the shifter rod, thus rethreading it for the shifter knob.

If you really want to shorten it (which I have no idea why) it would be much better to just cut it then weld it.

EXACTLY what I was going to say... No it doesn't Shorten the shifter, but it does make the shifter sit farther away from the center console.... By shortening the shifts, there is less travel needed to the front by the shift lever... I thought this seemed to 'open' up the middle of the car....

I think Trance was right on this one...

You can also look into some Team Voodoo shift knobs. People have complained that it is too plain looking (just fair warning) but I like it. The thread on the knob goes all the way inside the knob which noticeably shortens the height, (which also shortens the shift). Here's a pic...you always here rave reviews by those who use it (primarily in Miatas and S2000s).

you can call around to a few fab shops and see if they would do that. if not, you might just go to a shop and have them cut and weld it lower for you

how does the shift boot stay on the knob though? does it latch on like it does on the stock one?

Its drilled further into the shift knob, this way the shifter shaft will thread further up into the knob. Hence the counter sink. The shifter itself is not any shorter, but the knob does not stick up above it by much. There may be a thin wall between the top of the shift knob and shaft itself.

Hope that helps, jason

More then likely it is held up by just the shift boot itself. There is really no way for it to latch like the stock on. You can see that there is a gap between the knob and the plastic piece at the top of the boot.

Yep it is not attached. I highly recommend it. Even without the CT SS it was like a short shifter due to the change in height. I couldn't believe how much the height it changed just with a shift knob.

Before you try surgery on the shifter, look into these knobs.

a few questions: you said it did isn't attached, so it just hangs there? How much shorter would you say it was? finally, where'd you buy?

Yep it just hangs there. No issues really. The way the pic looks is exactly the way it looks all the time. However, if you are really hustling, you can hear a "clink" as the ring on the boot hits the bottom of the knob. That's it.

I can't really estimate, but maybe 1 to 1.5 inches lower? I really think the pic helps.

I bought more than a year ago from www.ricks2k.com.

ditto here and it's a great feeling when driving....BTW getting back to the subject on hand , if you have a machine shop near by or have asomeone who works in one ask to get a "tap" or die once you find out the thread on the shifter, thread the die, tap the thread up until you think you want it, remove the cutter insert a nut and get a hacksaw and go at it...seen it done on other cars by people at work, but I'm not sure other than looks, why would anyone want to do this...
Or buy one of these sets....

a countersunk knob is the best $35 i ever spent aside from the $50 for the comptech SS.

The two combined make for an awesome feel!

Yep...
Fructus turned me on the to the Skunk2 knob...
See pic below:

It's countersunk, so it sits about an inch lower than stock (you can adjust the heigt actually)... and what makes it so cool is it weighs almost 2 lbs. That extra weight compensates for the notchiness the comptech SS kit introduces.
The two combine result in short, smooth, click click shifts.

And the finished goes well with the rets of the TL interior. I detail painted the red letters blue with testor model paint to match the blue stitching of the A-Spec steering wheel.

It's adjustable.
It comes with a nut that you use to lock it in position. I didn't use it, I just added some teflon tape for friction, and threaded the knob all the way down the shaft so it sits lower.

Hey Chris, I have been thinking about that knob ever since I saw it that day... quick question, how does the shift boot ring connect to the knob??
