isn't deleting the third cat illegal? thats what the exhaust shop told me. would any resonator bigger then 14 inch fit or does it have to be specific measurements? and would be by any chance have the part number for the magnaflow first and second mufflers?

I'll try to find the Aero resonator part number, but I'm sure if you search you should be able to find it. Possibly in this thread also

Parasurfer is just plain wrong.
It is a Federal Offense (literally) to remove or disable ANY emission control device on a street vehicle (there's a time limit, but it's like 80's or 90's something).
BUT lots of people do it anyway. Will you get caught? That's the real question. . That depends on a lot of things.
- Do you have some kind of State inspection? If not, the chance of being caught is near zero.
- Does your state inspection (if you have one) only check OBD-II, or sniffer test, or visual check, or all 3?
For the 3rd cat probably the only way to be caught is during a visual inspection. You definetly will NOT get an OBD-II/CEL fault becuase the is no sensor. If you have your primary cats, it is very unlikely a sniffer would detect an excess of emissions.
Personally, have passed at least 2 (maybe 3??) State inspections (visual and OBD-II) with out a 3rd cat. ymmv.
Edit:
BTW, the topic being discussed specifically in this thread - Removing the resonator and mid-muffler on the stock exhaust - does NOT remove or disable the 3rd cat.

Technically, it is illegal to remove any of the cats. However, since it isn't monitored, you won't get a CEL and at least around here, OBDII cars they simply plug into your OBD port and check for codes. No codes, you pass.

removing/modifying ANY emission system is a large fine. a shop would incur a $125,000 fine for their first offense.

Heys guys, where is everyone buying there dynomax' from?........also, if I get a type s rear bumper, what size quad tips should I need, 3.5", only asking because I want to get all the welding work done at one time.

Compilation of all stages of exhaust resonator modification.
So I took the time and made this post so all of the new people don't have to go through 20 pages of discussion.
So far, there are 4 stages of this exhaust mod.
Stage 1.
Least noticeable in exhaust note increase.
Configuration:
Stock exhaust.
Remove mid-muffler. Replace with 2.5" straight pipe. Everything else remains stock.
Cost: Can be anywhere from $30-$60 w/aluminized pipping.
Stage 2.
A tad louder than stage one, a bit more pronounced tone.
Configuration:
Stock exhaust.
Remove mid-muffler. Replace with 2.5" straight pipe.
Remove stock resonator. Replace with Magnaflow resonator part# 10416.
Magnaflow resonator is a 14" long resonator, which dampens and changes the note of the stock exhaust a bit more, thus you get a bit more loudness/tone.
Cost: Magnaflow resonator costs around $60. Install ranges from $60 -$90 w/ aluminized pipping.
Stage 3.
(Tone result TBA)
Stock exhaust.
Remove mid-muffler. Replace with 2.5" straight pipe.
Remove stock resonator. Replace with Dynomax resonator part# WLK-24215.
Dynomax resonator is a 12" long resonator, which is a bit shorter and less dampening than the magnaflow resonator, thus it should give you a bit more loudness/tone than stage 2.
Cost: Dynomax resonator costs around $40. Install ranges from $60 - $90 w/aluminized pipping.
Stage 4.
Loudest setup out of all 3. Has a bit of a rasp, similar to M3 exhaust setup.
Stock exhaust.
Remove Mid-muffler. Replace with a 2.5" straight pipe.
Remove stock resonator. Replace with a 2.5" straight pipe.
Cost: Can be anywhere from $40 - $60.
Note: If you live in a climate that is prone to rain, snow, rust, Stainless steel pipping is highly recommended.
This also does not prevent you from passing smog, as it does not alter the characteristics of the catalytic converters, but it does not mean that this is street legal either as it does alter the stock setup of the exhaust.

I'm about to do a stage three conversion. I bought the Dynamax from Amazon.com for about $37shipped. I know a guy who's going to do the work for me (and the transmission switches replacement and fluid flush). He's a Ferrari/Lambo mechanic, so I'm quite sure he can handle this.
If there is anyone in Bucks, Montgomery, Philadelphia, Chester or Delaware counties (in PA) and wants to get in on this to get a cheaper price, the guy will be bending pipe anyway. PM me.

I just did the stage 3 exhaust today thanks to this thread. I purchased the Dynomax Resonator 24215 from Advanced Auto Parts and took my 05 stock TL to a muffler shop to have the mid muffler deleted replaced with the 2.5 pipe and swap out the stock resonator and replace it with the aftermarket one. It sounds ok in my opinion. It is not raspy at all and there is no drone whatsoever which is a plus. It's just not enough for me. I understand that i cannot get that sound/performance from this mod. But for the time being this will suffice until I upgrade my exhaust system. Thanks again for this great thread, it gave me inspiration to do it!

Best Thread EVER! so very very long though lol
Stage 3 seems to be the way to go with the dynomex 12' resonator.
Question:
Should I swap out my mufflers (perhaps with magnaflow), or just swap out the tips? (I want the type S quad look)
Theres cheap dual tips on ebay, but there not slanted
Now that stage 3 is clearly the wa to go. Lets get some opinions on mufflers and tips. Pls and thank you

ok so i have a atlp quad exhuast and atlp test pipe and jpipe and rv6 pcds, now I'm getting rasp and went to the muffler shop to get a resonator put on( don't know the brand they had it in their shop) and now i can barley here my exhaust. so my question is, will the magna flow 12460 get rid of the rasp and also won't effect my sound quality of my cat back? or what resonator can u guys suggest? thanks

Ok I'll be blunt here there's no way that I'm looking through 50 pages of a thread so don't flame me through this question
Does anybody know the legality of a stage 1 mod, being that just the mid-muffler is removed? If anybody knows specifically in NJ that'd be even better! How about a stage 2, considering that's about as I'm willing to go lol.

Completed Stage 3 Exhaust
I purchased the Dynomax resonator off Amazon for less than 40 shipped, and the shop charged me 50 to remove the mid-muffler and install the new resonator. I'm pleased with the result and I would recommend it to anyone who wants a better sound/tone. IMO it gives the TL a more, "throaty" sound when you accelerate. Thanks everyone for all your help!

im deciding weather or not to do this, but i just got one question its probably stupid but does removing the mid muffler or resonator have any affects besides sound? like loss of power or torque, engine health, or long term affects?
