K&N Air filter
It depends on what system you have- some design their pipes around their air filter and its design
In general K&N is great- just dont over oil it when you clean and refill- follow the directions and all is well

I think the OP is implying that the stock intake is a CAI, and asking about better performance if a K&N filter is used. (That's how I read it anyhow).
I think the conventional wisdom is that the TL-S stock Intake and Exhaust are pretty free flowing, but that an aftermarket CAI will yeild additional gains.
I don't think a drop-in K&N filter is as good as a aftermarket CAI with open-cone filter like the AEM. BTW there's been tons of discussions about K&N vs. AEM dry-flow filter. K&N is a leader in the field when it comes to most cars but the consensus around here is AEM is better in the TL.
I'm not able to comment on the K&N's effectiveness when compared to a CAI, but one thing I know to be true is that
there is currently no K&N filter that will fit a 2007 airbox.
The pre-2007 air boxes are rectangular in shape and the 2007+ boxes are the same size and shape except for one corner which is 'lopped off'.
I learned this first hand when I tried to install a K&N designed for a 2006 into my '07 and it wouldn't fit correctly. K&N is aware of this because I was in contact with someone in their R&D department and they said that they would be working on a new design for the 07+ models.
...just thought you'd like to know so you don't go and learn the same thing I did while standing over a hot engine bay.

Keep in mind the K&N doesn't filter anywhere near as good as the stock filter or any paper filter for that matter. For just a drop in filter replacement I doubt you will see a 1hp gain. If you plan on running the car for 20K miles and selling it, go for it. If you plan on keeping it 100K I would leave the stock one in.
