Im hungry for Mustangs

I had a sweet 2000 tl, wich my dumb ass destroyed but I just got a 2006 tl a/t & i dont like emitting hate, but i HATE getting beatin by mustangs!!! My dream is not of riches and luxurys. My dream is to defeat Mustangs.(and naked brazilian chicks)

I'd like to hear everyones full set up on a tl, that would eat Mustang GT's....and dont just leave it at Super charger please!! start with easy n cheaper mods first.

Together we will conquer these D-bags.

you have to be a bit more specific when you say you want to beat "mustangs". year, engine, model, makes all the difference in the world =/

and sorry, but there is no such thing as "cheap n easy" mods for the 3rd gen TL. most of the mods available dont come cheap, with relatively little gains... also, if you wanted to even the playing fields, you should have gotten yourself into a 6spd, instead of a slushbox

now, if your talkiing about the new 5.0 GT, then NO WAY will you come close without throwing a SC or TC into the equation..

Mustangs are right off the bat sports cars while ours belong to the luxery line up. Throw that on their along side your automatic joke box and you've got yourself a really good laugh trying to race one. Hard truth but I'm a realist. But then again it all depends on the driver and what type of mustang you want to beat hehehe. My first recommendation as 04accordcpe mentioned would be to get at least a Manual Trans and start from there. You can't expect to beat cars with cheap mods either. As for me I beat lots of mustangs. How you ask? Easy... Look at my interior vs theirs hahaha.

also FWD SUX!

TL slush box goes 0-60 in like 7 sec. the 6 spd would probably do it in 5-6 if your good, and if you get rid of enough weight and add a j-pipe, exhuast, and PCD's, you'll probably get to 60 at 4-5 sec. If you go Turbo or S/C, since it's a FWD your going to have a horrible time cuz those wheels will be the only thing moving if you just stomp on the gas. so you'll also need really good tires and light weight racing wheels and suspension, did I mention FWD SUX?

this all will probably cost you like 10k+

how about you trade in ur TL for M3?
it's a beautiful car inside and out
414hp
0-60 in 4.5
!!RWD!! good luck

FWD sux...

Yeah if you're talking about the newest 5.0 Mustangs you picked the wrong car to beat them in. In fact, there are a bunch of articles out now that the GT is faster than the M3 in a straight line...there was a video where the GT driver was blatantly feathering the brakes to keep from blowing past the M car.

If you want to have a shot at all, turbo / SC is the best bet. Probably the cheapest way to hang would be to do full bolt ons and a 75 shot of nitrous...but at that point your motor would be on borrowed time.

Sell your TL for an EVO or STI. Then you wont be bringing a knife to a gun fight.

The new GT is faster than the M3 in the 1/4 by barely a 1/10 of a second....after repeated runs. Most of the time they were neck and neck....hardly blows by the new M3.

That said, I'd still take the new GT over the M3...and spend the savings on a new BMW S1000RR, and smoke pretty much anything on four wheels. But I digress...

I agree with the trade-in suggestion. But if for some reason that you feel compelled to stay with the TL platform, then here is one possible recipe to cure your hunger.

TL Diet (click here) + Nitrous (only if done the smart way) = Whoop ass

The recipe above takes care of most of the traction issues because the Diet leaves the vast majority of the weight hanging over the front wheels. Use some sticky street tires with the full diet and you will be serving-up a full cup of whoop-ass from a dig.

Combined with the full diet, a 100 shot of nitrous (very risky even when done the smart way) would give you the equivalent of 450 whp.

The automatic transmission will most likely handle the nitrous provided that RedLine Racing ATF (click here) is used and a nitrous RPM Window Switch is used to not spray between the shifts.

Go to page 2 to see the 0-60 times. This is with no nitrous. Just the diet. My nitrous in not istalled yet. It is going in this winter.

100 shot by itself probably ain't enough to whoop-up on the newer American muscle cars. It would be enough to hang with them, but not whoop'um.

You can spend thousands in mods to beat a stock Mustang. Then you run into a modded Mustang.

Beware, there are some nasty Mustangs out there. Just from random streetlight encounters I've run into a turbo GT, many supercharged GTs, a Kenne Bell supercharged '03 Cobra, an 8 second '60s Mustang complete with parachute (no plate, I'm assuming not legal)that I only won because he got excited and nearly spun it, countless nitrous Mustangs. There was a time where I swear, gears, timing bump, exhaust, and a 150 shot were a factory option on the Fox bodies.

I beat mustangs, corvettes, m whatevers all day long. Then come to think about it. It's not even fair cause i'm on two wheels and they have four heavies. Yes trade your slush puppy and get a motorcycle. Right off bat no mods needed it will smoke most modded cars. Then a few mods here and there and you've got a full blown flying coffin if you're not careful. Don't pick fights you can't win. Specially with a butterknife to a nuke fight.

That was great.

IHC is right. There are some NASTY Mustangs out there, both old and new. The new Mustang has already been in the 11s with bolt ons and a tire. Honestly, even the older 5.0s only need bolt ons/gears to be in the mid 13s.

You shouldn't have bought an automatic TL if you wanted to beat Mustangs. And I agree with Timb, why buy a luxury car if what you stated in your 1st post is true?? Trade it in for a performance car.

You will need nothing short of boost or spray to keep with most modded Mustangs. And even a SC would get a stock 5AT TL into the low 14s/high 13s, which is barely keeping up with the 99-04 GTs stock.

You're better off buying another project car rather than turning a DD TL into one eventually.

Believe me, you don't want a project car to be your DD. This is speaking from experience.

Money certainly can accomplish anything, but it is better spent elsewhere on a different platform that was made for straight lines. We're just giving you the advice you asked for, it doesn't sound like you are going to take it... :P

True 99% of the time but there are some cars out there that will put a whooping on a bike. I lost to a Hayabusa and some other large displacement bike but from a dig it was way too close and I haven't lost to any of the smaller bikes.

Isn't that the truth. My father told me this when I was 17. I used my race/project car as my DD until I was 28. While it was nice to brag about it being a "true" DD street car, I think it aged me 10 extra years wondering if it was going to start for work in the morning or that it wouldn't leave me stuck in traffic. If only I had listened.

Don't forget any halfway serious hot rodder is going to be on some form of tire whether it's drag radials or my style, wrinkle walls. If both cars were dead even from a roll but the FWD TL cuts a 2.3 60' and the Mustang cuts a 1.7, that's about a 10 carlength difference in a full 1/4 race.

To put it in perspective, I've personally witnessed at one of the original "Battle of the Imports" with the Turbo Buicks, Fast Fords, and Chevy guys invited to spoil the fun, some of our guys got the track officials to let them run in a foot race to see if they could match some of the 2.3-2.5 60' times of the Hondas. I've seen with my own eyes that a quick human can keep up and beat a FWD Honda to the 60' line. I was sore the next day from laughing so hard.

I guess the point is, have fun with a modded TL possibly keeping up with a stock Mustang with a below average driver. When you do the driver mod and both cars start gettting serious nothing short of a turbo or large shot of nitrous is going to be in the same ballpark.

You will need way too much power to beat a new Mustang 5.0 but a stock 80s 5.0 might be a possible win. These cars are not fast and even with tons of mods cant keep up with newer V8 cars like Camaro, Challenger, Vette (fuggetaboutit), Cadillac CTS-V, Pontiac GTO. Just enjoy the nice ride and cool gadgets and be happy. I have a Type S and had a 6.0 Pontiac GTO. This car is quick but its a full second away in the 1/4 mile which is about 100hp and the new 5.0 Mustang is about .5 seconds faster then my GTO because its lighter and makes a little more power. RWD also hooks 20x better then FWD. FWD is a packaging adavantage and makes it easier to start in snow but in all other ways is at a major disadvantage to rwd without a ton of mods that make it undriveable as a DD. Dont get too hung up comparing a performance vehicle to a sporty luxo car from Honda. Buy an E55 AMG compressor if you want it all and want a chance to beat up on V8s.

My other car is my project car and was a DD for almost 7 years and its AWD, puts down 440awhp and can do a mid 11 at 125mph. It looks basically stock because it is, but it comes factory as a twin turbo which makes getting another 100hp quick and easy and reliable. Its not a drag car so I keep that in mind as I mod it and keeping it purely a street car makes it pretty potent on the street even if its really nothing compared to a TT Vette or a modded Viper. I just enjoy it for what it is and dont get hung up on comparisons because theres always somebody faster. If money was no issue, I would have a modded Porsche 911 turbo as my DD, or a new supercharged ZR1.

i laugh how people say they are over a stick or its such a PITA to drive in traffic and such. EVERY car ive owned has been a stick and living in LA traffic my whole life has never been a hassle for me. even with my CM clutch which made my peddle 50% stiffer over stock, its still not a big deal.

bottomline, until you make the TL a bona fide project car, your not going to achieve your goal in conquering mustangs or most of the newer american V8s without the aid of some type of boost.., but like someone mentioned, if you do decide to boost, all they need is a couple boltons to move a step ahead again.. i guess one of the biggest advantages we do have is the element of surprise... cause in triumph or defeat, you will still raise eyebrows either way

^LA traffic is weak. Compared to I-35 traffic in Austin, you have no idea at all. If you lived here, get used to being in traffic for 3 hours without passing a mile.

We're not saying the TL doesn't have potential, but if you're looking to beat a Sports car, you either pay to play (full exhaust mods and FI), or just trade in your car.

All 1998 and older American Muscles are all fuglish. Only car I would want too get out of all the American cars would be the Challenger. Camaro, Mustang, Charger, and the 300 are the most hideous cars on the planet. The Prius looks better.

I still say get an M3 bro, atleast th girls will want you more.

Anyway, if you do manage to beat a mustang GT what will you get? a trophy? you might as well tell us you beat a mustang right now and who would be the wiser?

There is no grand prize for winning a street race, just a really bad ticket or worse. so how about you just enjoy what life has provided you thus far, and not dive into something that isn't really worth the hassle.

Something you learn very quickly with project cars, no matter how much $$ you've dumped into them: There is always someone bigger and badder than you out there!

You could always boost a built motor in a civic hatch. Done right you'll make some mustang owners feel pretty stupid.

I am supprised this has gotten so much response! Like everyone said the Mustang is a "sports car". (I still dont believe that is Ford makes more V6 models then V8 it should be a sports car). That a whole topic by itself. Just look at the power to weight ratio of a mustang to a TL. Right there you will see you will never beat a GT Mustang... for cheap that is.
I agree with the Civic idea... less the hatch (yuck). I had a 94 coupe that killed the new GT like it was going out of style and it costs like nothing to build a Civic.
Good luck and just enjoy the TL for what it is!

You can def. take a STOCK 05-10 GT with some bolt-ons.
The 10' GT will be a little harder because they added like 15-20 ponies with a new intake.

You guys are all over the place. Are we talking about stock cars or built cars?

I think you guys are comparing oranges to apples. I came from racing stock motor with juice to fully built turbo motor.

If I would buy a mustang, it has to be Cobra.

If you're talking about the Terminators, I agree. It's not just how fast they are stock or how easily you can make them real fast. They come with a forged bottom end that can take over 800hp without ever pulling the engine. That would put them high on my list for a project car. Not to mention you can literally bolt in a live axle if you choose to.

From what I've seen, Cobras are hard cars to fuck with. A lot of them look stock, but could potentially end up having anything from Kenne Belles to big twin snails.
