Just took the 05’ TL to ‘Fab n Dab’ for a quote on a 10 point roll cage for next season. $2900 all said and done. He does great work and I want only him to do the job.
Signed up for the Honda Racing Line because a competition license is needed, and the store is fresh out of 3G TL oem racing parts. Dang, waited two years for this.
Its okay, I will be able to collect HPD Bucks for oem parts through racing.
Great Track day today! There were two NSXs in front of me. Both had better tires and brakes. One had stoptech 6 piston fronts, 4 piston rears with MCS Coilovers(top tier). The other one had alot of CF and bolt ons including coilovers.
the TL kept on the ass of the Black NSX until he spun into turn 10. You will hear a tire screech and my hand do a spin out of the window in the video. He handled the stin pretty well. Kept on the ass of the Red NSX, but he would not let me pass.
The Mid-engine Corvettes crawled away. One track prepped Corvette told on me because I didnt let off the throttle after waving to pass me at the beginning of the straight.. This car has 650hp/650trq and crying to the officials because he couldnt pass my car in time for the turn. For a corvette with the license plate reading "TRKCAR" , I expected more.
There were two 2016 Shelby Cobra GT350s with 520hp. Both got passed because they couldnt pull in the straights and couldnt shake me in the turns with superior tires.
To anyone who had doubts that a Lightened stock TL can't perform, this TL will show you its can do quite well with good tires. With junk tires the TL is currently taking tight turns at 80mph.
TL is such an under rated car people don't even understand.
Even in stock form it gave the Lexus IS350 and Infiniti G35 a run for it's money. Both RWD and AWD cars within the same segment.
A FWD sedan that can oversteer from factory? Gutted and beafen up the suspension and add back some rigidity to the car and it's a real contender. Just check out the Thunderhill Racing Acura TL.
Having raced against multiple G35/37 on track, they are rather slow when paired against the TL. Wish more people would see what a great design Acura produced and would track them.
Called Honda Performance & Development today. They don't have any 3G TL racing parts, said they never did, but I know they had fourth gear sets. Perhaps it was on another model that interchanged with the 3G.
Honda Performance West was the Team that created the Acura TL that won first place at the 25 hours of Thunderhill in 2004. Many of the team mates have left or reired since then, though I got contact of that team and am waiting to hear back of any details regarding that build in 2003-2004.

Definitely off another car. Probably an Accord or something.
I don't remember your engine build but did you swap final drives?
Acura has swapped focus to "Real Time Racing" team where the TL was eventually replaced by the TLX (and now TLX-S)

I changed the 3rd/4rd gears for straight cut and replaced sixth gear for a cuff. But I am going to replace the sixth gear and put the cuff on fifth. Final drive it oem. Will reach out to @Bense eventually for a custom gearset.
Believe Realtime racing has been part of Acura since the 90s, but perhaps were overbooked during the 2004 era? We will someday know these answers.

2G TLX and TLX-S gets all the attention. As a 1G TLX owner I feel left out. No 6mt, no turbo. Only thing that stands out is the spiffy aspec body kit and red interior. If only the 2017 accord 6spd were to be bolted to the v6 it'd be a different story.
Curious what 'racing' parts you were hoping to find from HPD or Acura? thought you had an extensive build already.
Thought to at least say a TL 3G racing part was purchased from HPD on my cars. Only thing available is an HPD tow strap..
My builds are still in the younger phase.
- 6MT TL-Sport needs biger brakes/rotors, lower control arms/negative alignment, Toyo RR tires, new ecu flashed, Rotrex 2.5 kit installed
- 5MT TL Type-S needs the Turbo setup finished/fuel system install/suspension/tires
- M90 TL needs a second engine/tranny in the back to be a dual tranny v12(until the front engine is removed). Suspension/tires
Thats just some of the mechanical portion without any cosmetic/body work.

Yeah the first TLX was both loved and hated. It fixed the 4G TL issues but it wasn't received as well as they had hoped. Then they went back and fixed the issues with the 2G TLX and TLX-S.
I'm sure when the 1G TLX gets a little cheaper someone would tinker around and find an easy 6spd swap.

Doesnt it add to the racing spirit when you see someone playing with an R/C car at a car meet or at the track? Three years ago I sent inquiries to a few R/C hobby shell builders and asked if they can make a Shell of the 3G TL to put into any universal size r/c car. They told me its an arduoius task and if it were feasible I would have to order 125 or so as a batch.
I came across this 3D modeling company today that I found two years ago.
Sent an inquiry to see if this model can be uploaded to a 3D printer and printed. it can even be modified to make a shell of a certian thickness in several parts of the shell.
Maybe some of you guys would like to make a group buy and have a small batch of these printed out to place onto R/C cars to drift around?

oh damn this is cool.
I was going to have my fenders 3D scanned for my next business project but this helps a lot too.
As much as I love all things 3G, not a fan of the 04-06 gauge cluster or the ‘H’ pattern steering wheel. Had a UA7 base cluster in the archive, so swapped it out. Much easier on the eyes. Love the brushed silver.
Steering wheel will be replaced for a quick connect in the near future.
Last night I removed all the windows, window tracks and window regulators.
Today I removed the extra metal from the truck, hood, and doors. There is nearly 100lbs less weight now. So car is at about 2740-2750lbs. Just a tad more than a 1998 Civic coupe 5MT.
Had to use a Heat gun to warm the glue enough to unstick, as well as carefully reinforce the outter shell with my feet as I gentely pulled the reinforcement off.
Dulled two fresh razors removing the glue at an extreme angle as to not scratch the surface.
There is basically a template Honda stamped into the sheet metal which is about the best route to cut the doors with. I used it and it worked out fine.
Best part it, when I see the BMW SPEC E46 guys and other guys at the track, thier car door are So wobbley and flimsy. My door close just like OEM. As if I didnt remove the innards.
I am happy with the result. Its as if I didnt do anything and I shaved 100lbs. I have Scratch resistance Lexan polycarbonate to put into the rear windows.
The car not only corners like a large gocart now, The acceleration is faster than the Rotrex on the 6MT type-S. Even north of 120mph.

Still need to finish rounding the edges of doors before I use silver paint to cover the bare metal. I got a gallon of Goof-off to remove the tar/butyl adhesive off the floor. This is all in preparation for the roll cage, as it will be substantially more difficult to do all this work with it in the car.
Going to get a rough weight at the scrape yard when this is deposited on Friday.

Looks more and more like a skeleton with each revision. Have you seen the P2R J-series ILX? They're trying to get down to 2100 lbs. What's next, fuel cell?

The ILX is lightweight from the start, so getting it to 2100 is very achieveable.
The lexan rear windows will make it look more full. Fuel cell may be heavier if replacing the plastic tank with an aluminum 17.2 gal. capacity. The tesla screen is out, but will be replaced with buttosn and switches on a CF board.
The roll cage will make it look complete.

lord, they have water restrictions where you live?
I can’t justify $150/m to water the grass. Even the garden sprinklers don’t aim well. I go out back and manually water the garden to save water. It rains 9 months out of the year. After the first week of rains, the grass is lush again.
16839377]Yessir +30mm vented in the works. Debating between 2 vented styles. Will probably host a poll to see what majority prefers.
and good work stripping more weight
Looking forward to getting a set for the racecar. Going to cut vent holes in the current ones to vent brake and tire heat. Having sticky tires and good brakes on a fed produced tremendous heat. I would someday like a staggered setup so the tears heat faster and the fronts have more tire to dissipate heat making them heat cycle more evenly.
Are you thinking of these two designs? Im going to do one, the other or both to dissipate heat on the oem fenders for next season. gotta remove the foam behind the fenders first.

Wheel well plastic is also going to be removed to bring in air from under the car/engine bay in the wheel wells to for heat management. The 300 treadwear sumimoto tires gave out last track day. They look like treaded slicks with rubber gouged out. I have been playing with air pressures and have been overinflating them. Seems this is why more chunks are missing from the center.
Rotated these tires to the front before the last track day. These tires are currently on the rear, though have had 6 track days in the front.

funny you posted the Porsche because that was 1 of the 2 styles I was going to have people vote on.
Porsche GT3RS or Civic Type-R styled vents on a +30mm fender (with bumper end caps)
after that it's rear over fenders... then after that it's +50mm fenders.
Race TL weighs less than 2699lbs w/o driver and fuel. Meaning it falls in the limit of the SCCA/NASA rules to use chromoly materials for a roll cage. Having a stiff chassis and safety for 80-120 lbs is a great trade off!
