XM and Sirius: Merger May Happen

Anyone else heard about this? My father heard something on the radio about it. That would be sweet. Howard Stern on my TL's satellite radio!

I wonder how this will impact service. Would one brand become obsolete?

Exciting news....

As a long time investor in both XM and Sirius, this rumour has been going around for a loooonnnnngggg time. Don't hold your breath. I have Sirius tuners along with the XM in the TL. Personally (remember IMO only) I can't stand XM. The best way to distinguish the music offerings are as follows:

- XM plays lots of off the beaten path songs. You won't hear many songs that you know. (Some people like this....I hate this)

- Sirius typically only plays songs that were at some point on the billboard charts.

I would hate if they merged. It'd be a monopoly on the car stereo that is only getting more and more popular.

Eventually you'd get just as good a service as you do from Microfocked.... er Microsoft.

I would be very surprised if this happens. Remember Dish was eventually barred from buying DirecTV. The government gave the reduction in competition as the main reason for this.

I have a Sirius portable and love it, I would love to see Honda do what Nissan does and offer a choice!

This deal was initially rumored because Mel Karmazin is trying to get the FCC to classify sat radio as a broadband service. That way, it's competetors would also include cable companies, internet providers and the like. Once this happens, it would make an XM / Sirius merger easier to approve.

The exciting thing is the possibilities this would bring about. Through sat radio technology, video streaming is already possible, and will be offered by Sirius in the future.

The possibilities are endless and with a visionary as CEO, we can olny benefit. Ahhh capitalism.

DiscoTL hit an important point ... without the reclassification of Sirius and XM as something else (broadband provider) there is no way XM and Sirius could merge. (as dinot said government would block it as a monopoly). Even with a reclassification it would be difficult to see this getting past the regulators until a third player came into the market.

You guys are hilarious. No way that they offer the programming of both when they merge. What you'll get is 1 channel for $200.00 per month with the cheapest programming (forget Stern) that drops every five minutes because the one combined company will have... NO COMPETITION!

And by the way, you'll have to sign a five year contract and pay a $10,000 activation fee.
