Is there a way to make a switch to turn on Reverse camera?

Hey guys im installing a rear view camera into my car this week using the DOMs unit. I know the DOMs unit controls the rear view camera via connecting it to the reverse lights.. But, I also want to be able to control it to go on with a switch. Is there a way to do this? I think I can do it the way some people have been able to control their Reverse lights with a switch.. but I cant seem to find the DIY for that.

Thanks!

just instead of sending the reverse light wire to the back up light send it to a 12volts Acc like the cig lighter or radio acc then add a toggle switch between the accessory wire and the doms unit. So the dom's unit would think that its always seeing that the car is in reverse and the switch would be able to turn the back up camera signal on and off.

The problem is that I want it to work like normal.. when I put it into reverse I want it to also turn on by itself.. So I need it to work with both the switch and reverse light..

Put a switch and relay between the unit and have it hooked up like normal but the the extra switch to send voltage to it when needed so you can have it running while in motion. I'll draw up a diagram and message it too you

I did this with my OEM reverse camera, and generally agree with Eiswritsat's suggestion. That's the simple and straight forward way to make it work

I thought you would need one since you would need it to still work when you go in reverse..

TypeSinNC -

Check out my write up about the install. There are no pics or a schematic, but see what you think. I have to get to work so I don't have time to get into anymore detail, sorry PM me or get back to me in this thread if you have any questions or want more info. I could easily make a schematic if needed

Well I haven't done this in the TL, but I wanted a similar setup in my work issued ford exploder- Instead of adding to reverse light I wired it to the rear defrost connector in the rear! It actually worked great so I could just hit the rear defrost button whenever I wanted it on, it looked factory, and it would even time out after a while so I didn't leave it on accidentally!!! I don't know that I would do this in my own vehicle but it was a work car!

So, I finally finished wiring this up.. all you need is a on/off switch.. wire one side of the switch to a 12 volt switched power source (I connected mine to the glove box cig lighter... its the white wire with red stripe I believe)... and the other end to the green wire for the reverse lights.. now you can turn on the reverse camera and the reverse lights with a switch!!!

Videos and DIY with pics to come.. hopefully by this weekend..

No I didn't put a diode in. I actually wired mine up differently from the guy a few posts up. I wired mine like eleganttypes and Rodney. I asked them how they did it.

So you guys installed a diode to stop the currents from flowing the wrong way? What kind of diode did you guys use? I got one from radio shack, the in914. is that ok to use? And how do I wire this diode thing up? Can I cover it with electrical tape? Do I have to solder the ends to a wire or can I bend the ends of the wires from the diode and connect a wire to it? ANd how do I know which way the diode needs to be?

i believe that is the correct diode, i would solder the ends if i were you. you could just bend the ends and twist the wires on, but that would be mickey mousing it. do it right.

the end with the bar on it goes towards the dvd drive in the trunk

Can anybody post up a wiring diagram. Exactly what wires do we tap and where are they located?

Hey guys.. I finished doing this mod.. I made a DIY: https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-audio-bluetooth-electronics-navigation-94/e-127-diy-reverse-lights-switch-tailgater-switch-757118/

To do this will also turn on your reverse lights.. Works great .. please post any questions in the DIY thread!
