sneaky peaky!

heres a cardboard mockup of the box i decided to build. im happy with it,especially the cost. it only cost me 30$ for the wood instead of 400 for a box.

im prob going to do a window with plexi but im not positive yet.

matt,i could DEF use the carpet,i was gonna have to figure out where to get it...also if u have any more of that dynamat ill buy some off u.

i decided to keep the car.

this is a very rough lookin mockup cause its cardboard lol...but i think the finished product should look real good.

i havent decided which way to face the sub but im leaning towards facing the armrest hole and putting a plexi in front so u can see the inside.

I will let you know on the dynamat as I have a project that I am planning on doing over the Chrustmas break, but I should have alittle left. Probably not as much as you will need with the power you "should" be running with that sub........

Carpet is yours for free, there was only one place over by Fry's that sold a carpet that matched really well. It was pretty expensive, but I bought 3 times too much lol

Looks like a good set up. Kind of looks like the one i'm getting this weekend but i have 2 JL subs. I wanted to do a plexi window, but dont think i'll have room with 2 subs because i plan on putting LEDs around the subs anyway but wated them inside as well.
Cant wait to see it finish, good luck

lembowski: can you tell me where you got the matching carpet? can I order online? TIA

Marty: If you fire toward the front you'll get better bass if you seal off the front of the woofer from the rest of the trunk. I've been playing around with my box positioning over the last few weeks and noticed this.

I'll have to check my receipt for the companies name and to see if they have a website.

well..i got everything wired up and the box built...i hooked it up,and there was alot of air coming out of the wire hole, but i tried to adjust it to sound right as much as possible before i took it back out to seal it completely over night.

the box didnt fit right, the sides were completely off....i really dont know how that happened...

also, when i did the mock up with the wood, its almost like it ruined the sound from the box just sitting in the trunk....it was sounding good all night but i just couldnt get the gain n stuff right to hit decent with decent sound. i just dont feel like its hitting hard enough all around...its NOT blown, but to me it seems like it stopped hitting harder out of nowhere...i will mess with it more tomorrow, and i think im going to rethink my box build.

i also forgot to mention that i accidently made the box about an inch and a half too deep because i didnt realize i had to use 1/4 inch smaller measurements cause i was using 5/8 wood...

soooo because i wasnt paying attn,i ended up with my box being 1/4 inch too wide...1/4 inch too tall...and 1-1/2 too deep...

so im going to just cut the back off and make it 2" less deep.

Can we see it before you scrap it?

You should get a speaker wire connector instead of just having the speaker wire come through a hole.

Also, make sure you seal ALL the joints air tight. I used wood glue on all the mating surfaces and I put a bead of silicone on all the joints.

Hmm.. The only other thing I can think of is maybe the inside volume doesn't match the recommended size from JL. It should be 1.25cf + the displacement of the sub.

Have you tried playing with the positioning of the sub to see if it will sound better?

4th order bandpass fired through the armrest or out the rear deck where the OE sub was located...removes all mechanical noise as well as all unwanted harmonics...yields a 1.5 - 8 db gain depending on Q curve...not to mention drastically reduced trunk and rear package tray vibrations...

ok,so i got the wall built,and i put it in,and to me,it ruined the SQ ()

honestly,it feels like its not hitting nearly as hard as when i just had the box sitting in the middle front facing the armrest hole.

and now it has a slight rattle when it gets to a high bass part. (the sub,not the deck)

Hey marti why dont you buy the box and then make an faux enclosure around the box to make it look like a wall.

its not the box that sounds like shit, its the enclosure that ruined the sound....;pay attention phong... lol

the box alone,in the middle front of the trunk, facing the arm rest sounds GOOD,but when i put the walls up,it ruined the sound big time...but it cut down trunk rattle 90%

id rather dynamat my whole trunk then run it like it is sounding like shit.

so can anyone else chime in on why they think adding the walls ruined my SQ?

should i maybe just make a flat wall? or no wall at all and just run the box in the middle like i started? it looks tacky like that.

helpppp...ima work on this prob all day tomorrow.

The wall did not ruin your SQ. It killed your SPL. It's like a road block keeping the sound pressure from getting into the cabin of the car. Your enclosure also is hindering the bass from entering into the car. Assuming that your OEM sub was removed you should have way better bass response if you moved the woofer away from the seat back a little and ditched the wall. Yup... that will totally take up all your trunk space.

I know a guy that makes custom enclosures that fit into the rear corner of the trunk. It's sweet. Completely out of the way. The woofer fires straight back for maximum bass response and perfect sound quality. Let me know, I'll give you his contact info.

LOL - I bet you do!

Do you by chance make one for the passenger side that can allow for the navi dvd to remain intact? I'm looking to put 2 JL 12w6's back there. I'm having the same problem as Marti and Matt (I Hate Cars). I don't want to lose my trunk space but it only sounds really good when I move the sub back away from the seat.

Let me know please.

I don't make one for that side because of the nav drive. I don't want to be the cause of system failure for anyone. Vibration or overheating that puppy will kill it with a quickness.

Just for the record.... a single 10" or 12" subwoofer in my custom enclosure is way louder and hits harder than the same sub in a wood box up against the seat. Most people only do a single enclosure and it's more than they expect. There is no better configuration for airspace, location and direction of fire.

doesn't that depend on the sub and it's enclosure requirements?

Great question. I don't make universal enclosures. Every custom enclosure built is fabbed to the requirements of the subwoofer, the music preferences of the driver, the power capability of the amp and the parameters of the car. That's just to determine the airspace and firing direction of the sub.

A buyer can also pick the final look of the enclosure. Carpet, plexi, carbon fiber, Kevlar, vinyl, suede, etc..

EDIT: Sorry for the thread hijack. I'm done. Carry on.

shes in the navy and shes gone on deployment,so when i bought it she didnt know, but when i told her,she was pissed...and i know if i bought a 350$ box,id be in troubleeee.
